Review
This is a grace-filled book for those who are learning to swim in the deep waters of God's mercy and love―waters in which we already swim but hardly know it. Cynthia Bourgeault shows us the road to a deep and lasting hope (Alan W. Jones, Dean Emeritus, Grace Cathedral, San Francisco; author of Soul Making)It is unusual to encounter a book that brings together to this degree metaphysical depth, practical spirituality, and sparkling writing. True to the dynamic of the spiritual life, Cynthia Bourgeault follows the path of hope inward to the center and then back outward to the world. (Bruno Barnhart, OSB Cam.)Dr. Bourgeault, an experienced guide to centering prayer, offers some profound and amazing insights into an inner joy that can be found in the midst of personal disappointment. She reveals friendship as living together in hope, which she experiences as God's ‘warm-heartedness.' (Beatrice Bruteau)Compelling! This is the one book I asked the entire parish to read, and it has initiated us into the deepest part of our spiritual vision of how to live with meaning with one another. Provocative and insightful, this book partners the head and heart in such a way that real transformation in daily living is not simply a possibility, but the longing from which one cannot escape. Ms. Bourgeault has captured a sense of Wisdom here that brings the Teacher into the lived moment. Hope and Mercy are no longer marginalized words, lost in an over-worked and trite lexicon of simplicity. They bounce and dance with life, and make sense for practicing this great faith we so desperately seek. (David E. Stringer, Rector, All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Corpus Christi, TX)This is a lovely little book that invites the reader to undertake an inner journey that can be transformative if one gives oneself to its demands. [Mystical Hope] remains a thought-provoking book likely to be of interest to those who practice centering prayer as well as to those who are serious seekers after God. In a time when hope is frequently threatened and is seemingly more necessary than ever, it is good to hear her encouraging words: ‘. . . hope, the hidden spring of mercy deep within us . . . flows out from the center; . . . we discover within ourselves the mysterious plentitude to live into action what ordinary hearts and minds could not possible sustain. (M. Zita Wenker, OSB Cistercian Studies Quarterly)A highly condensed book by an experienced guide to the practice of Centering Prayer as taught by Fr. Thomas Keating. The book will be of enduring interest to mature meditators seriously committed to contemplative prayer. (Schola)In this illuminating volume on the dynamics of hope, Bourgeault suggests a new way of envisioning this Christian virtue that plays a major role in the Biblical account of God's dealings with humankind. . . . The author challenges the church ‘to become a sign of hope in a broken world,' to walk the talk of love, compassion, forgiveness, and compassion. (Values and Visions Reviews Service)This short book is easily read, but putting its teaching into practice is the work of a lifetime and I, for one, will be happy to spend the rest of my life in practicing what Cynthia Bourgeault so gracefully preaches. (Salt, The Monthly Newsletter Of The Anglican Parish Of Salt)Mystical Hope is an inviting, warmhearted, and reflective introduction to Christian mysticism....Bourgeault's book beautifully balances teaching with illuminatingly illustrative autobiographical anecdotes. (H. Talat Halman, Central Michigan University)

Before I start, I have to point out that this book is about a lovely subject & is easy to read. I think it would be of great use to anyone who has been turned off by the idea that Christianity is regimented & rule driven & not founded in the love God has for us in Christ.Having said that, there are a few reasons I would likely not read it again, hence the 3 stars. The second chapter, for me, is wholly unpalatable. I take tremendous issue with the desire of some Christian thinkers to make quantum physics be about God (when God is about everything, & simple analogies in nature will do). Those who speak of God as though God is expressed in physics always strike me as understanding neither. It also serves to alienate persons who have real need for visceral connection to Christ. Now they have to go look up terminology, & they will find that it doesn't quite fit.The author also brings up another of my issues with this book, though she then forgets it, which I do not fault her for in the least. It is kind of airy-fairy. She notes that a friend of hers dismisses Christian meditation as white middle class navel gazing while simultaneously talking about boating in Maine & traveling to monasteries for retreats. There is nothing wrong with either of these activities, but some of the people in the deepest pain, who lack anything like a connection to God because they are working two jobs or raising kids on food stamps are NOT going to find quiet time to go inside to the point vierge. An associate of the Benedictines recently spoke at my parish, & he said it is perfectly possible to meditate while making your kid a peanut butter & jelly sandwich. I wish the author had said the same. This book was assigned to me for a class, so I admit it's not one I would normally choose for myself. People who come to it willingly will probably find it lovely. It had some moments.
Cynthia Bourgeault is one teacher/writer who is a must read for anyone on a truly Christian spiritual path. Each of her books that I have read has helped feed the hunger I have had since I was a child....to know God, to know the Christ and to know that the divine lived in me also. The mainline Protestant church I attended with my family seemed empty of the mystery, wonder and love of God and I somehow knew as a child that there was so much more than was being spoken of at Church. ...and I somehow knew that the Christ's message was so much more than being good and kind.Cynthia's books have acted as a roadmap on my spiritual journey...a journey. Her books are invaluable for any Christian spiritual seeker and I feel blessed for discovering her works.
I discovered Cynthia Bourgeault through her Wisdom of Jesus CD teaching. Her perspective on who Jesus was and is unlocked many doors in my mind and heart. As a believer brought up in traditional teachings of Christianity, and one always, inside, saying this isn't right, CB's books have instill a peaceful joy...all my cells cried out yes! I immediately researched all of her works. This little book was not a disappointment. An easy read with profundity in each paragraph. I have purchase many copies as gifts to family and friends. I recommend this book highly as a gateway to a "new" approach to Christianity which I truly believe describes the truth of the gospel message as it was delivered in the beginning.
Cynthia succeeds at explaining and describing the mystical core of Christianity in terms that I can understand. She taps several sources and anecdotes to illustrate the life-changing process this little book is about. I particularly connected with her analogy between Christianity and physics. This is quantum physics, whereas classical Christianity is Newtonian physics. I plan to read it again and also check out her other books, starting with The Wisdom Christ.
As a contemplative, Cynthia Bourgeault happens to be a teacher dear to my heart. This book, though little, has within its pages vital information for anyone who desires a more intimate relationship with God. For me, its contemplation on the Mercy of God carried the day. As she describes it, it felt like the boundaries of my soul were being stretched to imbibe new life from a boundless tank of the purest possible air. It brings home the long-suffering, compassionate and loving nature of God to go to the nth degree to bestow on any trusting pilgrim complete restoration to the fullness of life. Such is mystical hope!
It leads you deep into the mystery of the Divine Mercy that is God. Cynthia packs huge amounts of thought, reflection and prayer into a small book. Read it prayerfully and carefully--and do this over and over again. Each time you will be led to discover new spiritual riches.
The book has helped me tremendously. Having meditated for several years now, this was a breakout year. Right after making some serious headway, I began reading the book which was highly recommended to me by Amazon. It had been on my nightstand for weeks. Once I began it was hard to put down. It not only helped explain my meditation experience, it helped restore my faith.
