Review

“Solidly researched, well-written and engaging.” - Dallas Morning News“Magnificent and tragic....Sharfstein is a wonderful storyteller with a deep knowledge of all the relevant source material from the period. His narrative is rich with fascinating historical details.” - Nick Romeo, Christian Science Monitor“Intimate, propulsive and ultimately heart-breaking....a compassionate military history and a shrewd examination of how cultural legends are created.” - Julie M. Klein, Chicago Tribune“A brisk narrative.” - Thomas E. Ricks, The New York Times Book Review“In his penetrating new book, Thunder in the Mountains, Daniel J. Sharfstein shows how the meaning of freedom was contested after the Civil War not only in the South but all the way to the Pacific Northwest....Sharfstein's account makes for absorbing reading; it adds immeasurably to our understanding of the complicated, interwoven lives of those who fought for 'progress' east and west.” - Henry Louis Gates Jr., Alphonse Fletcher University Professor, Harvard University“One of the epic tales of American history, rendered by a master storyteller. Daniel Sharfstein breathes new life into the fascinating figures at the heart of the Nez Perce War.” - Karl Jacoby, author of The Strange Career of William Ellis: The Texas Slave Who Became a Mexican Millionaire“Daniel Sharfstein offers a searing account of an American tragedy: how Oliver Otis Howard, a champion for the rights of freed slaves, became an architect of the dispossession and subjugation of Native people. This beautifully written book will change the way readers think about the era of Civil War and Reconstruction.” - Ari Kelman, author of A Misplaced Massacre: Struggling Over the Memory of Sand Creek“Beautifully wrought and impossible to put down, Daniel Sharfstein’s Thunder in the Mountains chronicles with compassion and grace that resonant past we should never forget.” - Brenda Wineapple, author of Ecstatic Nation: Confidence, Crisis, and Compromise, 1848-1877“Revelatory and riveting.” - Gregory P. I just finished the book tonight, ive read 5 other books on this subject and this is the only one that told the history way before and after the war. a lot of information ,but it was very interesting, highly recommend

Grew up next door to the Last battle field sit. Been to all of the sits mentioned. Spent three H/s summers tracing out the trails w/ dad. Needs a SIXTH star.

This is no question a fairly long read but you never feel like that,--- when reading it, you want to know more, a really good page turner as history goes, I think even with the points that some writers of history lose their audience with,-- this author makes you want to know more, in my view. I loved the book and highly recommend it, if you have any interests in Native American and simply American history, well written and very detailed work in my opinion and well worth reading, you won't be sorry for spending the time to read this work, truly one of the best, and a great investment for your personal library.

Beautiful and descriptive and compassionate. I have walked some of Nez Perz trails and stood on the Big Hole massacre site where I felt the land crying for the unjust tragedy that took place there. This book has great insight into what happened and why. Gayle Reed

I gave this book 5 stars because it is a realistic insight into the minds of Chief Joseph and OOHoward. It is very readable and interesting. The only problem I had was the author's bias against the South and he makes it very evident in this book. He is one of "those people" who conjure up images of rich Southern planters who rape, beat and otherwise abuse their slaves...............................and yet he never really makes a statement about the abuse of the American Indians by the US government. That said, I came away with a real empathy for Chief Joseph and his people. The US army had no qualms about killing Indian women and children. I think the saddest part was that they never let the Nez Perce return to their homeland............................and Chief Joseph's bones were not laid to rest near his father's grave........................but then his father's skull was missing since a rancher had dug it up and gave it to his dentist brother to display in his office.........................................

I had hoped for a better book on the subject. The first third of the book was too much detail about Howard's early life in Reconstruction after the Civil War. It plodded along, but I kept reading hoping that it would improve. The middle third of the book is a good telling of the conflict with Chief Joseph ... but almost too lacking in detail. I feel that the book should have delved deeper into that aspect. Also too much about Howard's assistant Wood. Why that was thrown in there ... in great detail is a mystery to me. Wood had nothing to do with any part of the subject matter. The last third of the book just bogged down and became almost unreadable. The book has some good information ... but I had hoped for better.

This is a welI written, smooth reading account of events during the last of the great Indian wars of the 19th century. Good insight from many historic perspectives. I you like history, especially of the American West you will like this book!!

If John Wayne were alive I can see him taking a very active part in this story. It did get a little boring but not enough to put the book down. Just made me read a little faster to get past the boring parts.
