As a student of history and a lifelong Bears fan, I thoroughly enjoyed Papa Bear. Halas accomplished some amazing things in his lifetime, and yet made many mistakes along the way. The author did a fair job of painting Halas as a strong but at the same time flawed individual. He lays bare the mistakes Halas made and those of the organization for the 20 years following his death, up through about 2003. Beware, Bears fans, those last few chapters are very upsetting! (more so than the team's 2016 record of 3-13)Ultimately, for me, Papa Bear summons strong emotions because of my own ties to the city of Chicago, the Bears, Wrigley Field, the University of Illinois, and the Chicago neighborhoods involved in George Halas' life story. His is an amazing story, and some fascinating people and sub plots are woven in throughout. There is certainly humor and triumph. In the end, for me, and I suspect for many modern day Bears fans, this story is a tragedy. I am left wondering, what might have been...? If you enjoy history and the sport of football, read this book!

This is the best book on the Chicago Bears. George Halas' incredible football life is one that should be admired for generations to come. It outlines the career of George Halas from 1895 through 2003. All the NFL Championships that were won are noted in this book. The author candidly tells the mistakes that George Halas made as well as his accomplishments. The book also tells the story of how the current owners, the McCaskey family, has done since the passing of George Halas. The book has an insert of great Chicago Bears pictures. The very reason the Chicago Bears have been a disappointment is also uncovered in this book.The best quote in the book is the following: "Jerry Vainisi, 1986. Hired by George Halas Sr. and Jr. in 1972 as comptroller and in-house counsel. Became vice president, general manager, and treasurer by 1983. Fired after 1986 in a power struggle with team president Michael McCaskey. The Bears have never been the same since his departure."You will not regret your decision to buy this book. Bear Down!

This is not a particularly well written or well organized book. But it is about an icon and provides good detail of the life of George Halas.As any avid professional football fan knows, George Halas is one of the original founders, players, and coaches of the National Football League. A Chicago native, he built and sustained one of the most gloried franchises in NFL history. It is rather a shame this book did tell the story with a little more panache.

What a treat this book is, not only for Bears fans but also for anyone who loves the NFL. There wouldn't be an NFL without the tireless work of George Halas, the Papa Bear. And Davis's book tells you all you need to know about this fascinating character. It is also a trove of information about the early years of the NFL. this song is fantastic! Camille saint-saens is a great composer. This piece is a challenge even for the accomplished cellist, and is the most fun I've had playing in a long time! Just as well, it arrived in the mail 4 days after I ordered, nearly a week before it was expected. A pleasant surprise indeed. I love reading history books, as long as they were not approved by the Texas Board of Education(because then they aren't worth a damn, apparently). However, I understand that not everyone shares my love of historical events. A lot of history books are pretty dry, at best. At worst, they are downright boring. This is not that kind of a book. This is one of the coolest history books I've ever read. I had originally bought it for my nephew, but once I actually started perusing the pages I realized that his mother would have a massive coronary if she saw the language. Even if said language adds to the ambience.The author, Ben Thompson, runs a site called [...]. He searches the history books for badasses. Not all of the badasses are men, nor are they all from the 20th century, which is refreshing. Thompson relates the stories with gusto, like a teenaged/college aged boy would describe a videogame boss fight to his friends--and this generates interest. The stories of these people maintain that interest. The humor seals the deal. There may be a bit of 'embellishment' in relating the stories, but this doesn't detract in the least. And each chapter is only at most five pages long--perfect for a short attention span or when you only have a minute here or there to read. So of course, I read the whole thing in a couple of hours, with a pause here and there.This might be a good book for a person who doesn't read a lot to improve their reading skills with a high interest book. It would be perfect for a reader who has trouble with maintaining attention when reading. In short, this is a perfect book to encourage reading in older teenaged boys. The language is really the only thing I think that a parent might take issue with, but since the profanity is a part of the schtick and not specifically gratuitous, I wouldn't have a problem if my 15 year old decided to read it.

Put simply, this is a book where the author writes about 40 badasses from history, and he does so with colorful language, pop references and plenty of humor. I enjoyed it thoroughly not only because it was entertaining, but also because I learned a lot about various historical figures and events. I found myself doing quite a bit of historical research. The fact that various Sikh badasses showed up in the book was an even bigger bonus. I fully intend to purchase the second book he wrote. This isn't for everyone -- in fact I would guess that he's around my age (born 1972) based on his pop references -- but the best thing about this book is that you can simply check out his website [...]and know whether or not you will like the book, because they're the same writing style. 9/10.

Just a simple note to let you know that how fun this book is. It's not fancy reading, and you won't be a scholar of history when your done, but it reads like a what I imagine an old Navy Vet might talk like or perhaps a real cowboy from Texas telling you the story over a rye-whiskey! It's FUN to read, and since it's my poo-break book when I come home in the evenings, my girl often asks me through the door what is so funny as I am constantly laughing out loud, and I say "What a clever writer, he certainly has a way with descriptions!"Like I said, it's not definitive in a research of history like manner, thought most end of chapters have little bonus "bet you didn't know" snippets which is true, I most often didn't! Still, entertaining and quick reads make for the prefect Christmas present also as I know a guy who would find this book right up his alley!Have Fun!

Ben Thompson's "Badass" isn't just hilarious, it's educational!Never before have I laughed out loud so obnoxiously while learning about the same material I used to fall asleep to during long, drawn out, monotone lectures by professors with less personality than Ben Stein. This is the kind of history book I would've loved back in high school, and it even helped inspire my own humorous history blog. Badass spawned two other volumes: 'The Birth of a Legend' and 'Ultimate Deathmatch' (both of which I also highly recommend). This one highlights many key figures from Ancient Egypt to World War II including but not limited to: Leonidas, Napoleon, and Vlad the Impaler!Now what are you waiting for? By the first part of this book I was growing weary of the repetitive superlatives, but overall an interesting way to present historical figures, many of whom I'd never heard. I'm a big history buff, but prefer to read a bit more on each subject. However, if you've got a young person who doesn't like history, this is a great way to grab their attention and let them know it's not all "boring."

This book (as well as the others by Ben Thompson) are that amazing combination of history, excitement, swearing, and general awesomeness that makes my 6th grader UNABLE to put the book down. Talk about getting a kid to LOVE reading... holy smokes. Our copies of Ben's earlier books are all ratty (and one has lost its cover) because my son has read them so many times. This book arrived TODAY and he's already nearly finished it. This is a page turner and super fun to read. Plus it's packed with real history - the short stories about real battles get my kid interested and then he's off doing more research on the same topics. What a way to encourage reading!There is a bit of swearing in the book (and some rude jokes - mostly involving crushed testicles, etc), but nothing super offensive. I think it's perfect for middle schoolers and up. (And also for adults - my husband and I both love these books!) Ben has done a nice job of having a mixture of people in history, so there are badass females too. I appreciate him giving equal badass opportunities!All in all, this is a super fun book to read. This is the perfect book for "reluctant readers" who may find most books dull. THIS BOOK IS NOT BORING!! :) Our whole family loves it. Lots of excitement, lots of humor, lots of history.

I saw this book cover on the Kindle Unlimited page with Ellen's name in the cover. I realized later it was published by someone else and felt duped by the cover. I am leaving this review so others can on be sure they intended to get this book since the cover could be misleading.

Ellen has great quotes that can make you laugh and think a little deeper at the same time. That's exactly what this book is.

Her books are great but this is just a collage of sayings without any context and a lot of repeats

Cute but the sliding pages aren't the best design. They stick and become annoying quickly. I bought this as a stocking stuffer for my 3 year old son who loves trains. I'm hesitant to give it to him now because I'm dreading the fits he's gonna throw when he can't get the pages to work.

I already wrote a review on this product but am still unable to edit: mentioned a slight problem but the seller contacted me instantly and made it right. I would recommend both this book and seller without reservation. Great companion to the Crews FREIGHT TRAIN book. Tells, often with interactive graphics, what's actually inside each train car.

Sweetest book. The train cars pull open to reveal their contents. After reading one at my friend’s house, I had to purchase one for myself....No, I don’t have grandchildren (yet). Did not want it to go out of print.

This is our third copy of this book. The grandchildren love it to death, literally. They are excited to see the kinds of things that are inside the trains we wait for at train crossings. Heavier duty than most pop-up style books. My copies have lasted an average of 5 years each of not-so-tender toddler love.

I originally bought this book at a train museum for my son. He loves that he can pull the book apart to see the insides of many of the train cars. Very cute concept. As some have commented, some of the sliders can come a apart (only one did for us--and actually I haven't fixed it yet because it really doesn't fall all apart...but I suppose I should fix eventually for overall longevity) but it's pretty easy to fix with just a dab of glue. (But I knocked it down a star for that.) However, I still would recommend it...especially is you're looking for an inexpensive train-themed gift that's a bit unique. In fact I bought a second one for a co-worker present.

Concept is interesting. The pages slide out from the center to reveal car content, but are difficult for little ones to manage. The story is preschool aged appropriate but the skill to manage sliding the pages is not obtained at same age.

This book is extremely cute. Each page of the board book plays a peek-a-boo game with what's on the inside of each train car. My nephew adores trains, and I can't wait to give him this book for Christmas.When I opened the book I noticed that some of the pages are hard to pull apart, which could result in "overpulling" by my 3 year old nephew. I've tried opening and shutting some of the pages so that they'll be "ready" when he gets it for Christmas :)This is a very unique type of board book that I find wonderful for the little ones.

I wish it was an open and flap book instead of a pull out book. It's hard for my LO to pull out the pages.

When people read a book, usually during the first reading you may only understand "a little".. I read this book in the 70's.. During that time I remember only "trying to learn the movements", and the "relaxation instructions"... Honestly...I did not learn anything... with the years and a lot, a lot of more reading about Taiji and learning directly from experts, and seen daily the amount of "youtube"'s information...then you one start to "understand" Taiji a little... and when you can find so many different versions and "styles" of ONE ART.... then you understand that most of them had not grasp the real true meaning of taiji... there may be not one true but many... Then one open his eyes and start 'understanding" it... it will take time to UNDERSTAND Taiji... This is an excellent book! But understand that this is just a book... even a good one... but YOU WILL NEVER LEARN TAICHI WITH A BOOK!!

I practice this specific style of Tai Chi. This book is the one that I have used for 20 years to remind me what I am supposed to be doing. There are pictures with each posture, though in the e-book mode, often they are on the next page or the previous page - not the author's fault, just a casualty of the e-book age. The steps of the Yang Style, short form, are here. The exact steps are here. Do this. Then do that. Then put your hand here. This is, often, what I need to be reminded what I learned, or what I should have learned.There are other books about the various styles of Tai Chi, there are videos on YouTube, DVD's galore: For me, this book is a must-have for my Tai Chi e-bookshelf: I do this form. He wrote the book! All I have to do, is do it!

This is the book I first used to learn this form. Although its not the easiest to learn from it does have photos of Cheng Man -Ching doing the postures so you know they are correct!

I practice a different style of tai chi than Professor Chen Man Ching does but I can tell from reading the book that he is one of the greatest tai chi masters ever. There are five different styles of tai chi but many of the principles are the same. Anyone who practices tai chi could benefit from reading this excellent book.

I bought this book as a teenager (17 or 18 ) but I gave it away hoping it would help the person who I gave it to. Today I just received another copy of it. As for the book it is great and for those who are do it yourself type of person, the benefits obtain are great if you master the form and the mentality.Good luck.

This book, like Zheng's 37 posture form itself, is accurate, concise, and filled with qi (ch'i).It was one of the first good English language books on taijiquan (t'ai chi ch'uan) and contains history, philosophy, the form, and sensing hands applications. It also has an interesting 'mirror image' format to the pictures, and a diagram of the locations of each posture in the form.It is well known that anything Robert W. Smith writes on martial arts is gold. When combined with Zheng's taijiquan, that gold turns to diamond!

I like the descriptions but the photos show positions reverse to the descriptions (e.g., left rather than right), which is very confusing and therefore limits its usefulness.

Outstanding Tai Chi book for the someone wanting to learn the short form of Ch'eng Man-ching. Has foot positions you can copy to put up on wall and is an excellent reference for the serious student.

First read this in college (40+ years ago) and found it an amazing read. Makes a strong statement on individualism, integrity, and principaled living. May lead you to new insights on livinging free and uncompromised. Downloaded it again to read it and remind myself what a real "superman" is. If you like to run with the herd you might not like it. On the other hand it may remind you why it is intellectual death to submit to society's ever changing principals and mores. A must read for all independent thinkers

Startling, in that this work, combined with Atlas Shrugged, shines a beacon on the life of men in such a way that causes a sincere and thorough examination of that which drives me, in my search for excellence and productivity as a man. I had not previously been presented with such a reasonable and clearly spoken verbal picture of the choice all men must make, every day of their lives, often many times a day, between the parasitic versus the creative mindset, and the resulting actions that naturally follow that demonstrate the truth of the decisions we make in each moment. My chosen daily occupation as a builder grants me endless opportunity to make these choices and observe the results of each one, in the viewing of the finished product I have created, and the reception of it by those who are to use what I've built. I can say, resoundingly and without hesitation, that the ideology Ayn Rand has elucidated upon in Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged are without doubt the recipe to living a hero's life of accomplishment and confident honesty. Her description of the tactics and motives of the parasite class connected lots of dots for me that I had previously wondered about (what's wrong with that guy that he would allow himself to build such wretched garbage? What's wrong with the telecom company that it uses intentionally dishonest marketing tactics to squeeze a few extra cents a month from their customers? How can "government officials" wink and turn a blind eye on horrifyingly immoral conduct by huge lending institutions who make it their policy to use predatory and openly fraudulent methods to confiscate property that the owners of depend upon for their shelter and livelihood?) but hadn't taken the time and energy to seriously research and think through. My gratitude to Ayn Rand for helping me along the path to the beginnings of wisdom, and a clearer path forward as a creative force on the planet called earth.

That’s what made her so beloved and hated. Even more so, that’s why people were so bifurcated about her books.Knowing that, then it isn’t shocking to realize that The Fountainhead was written with her very own ideals embedded within every page, within every character, within every thought. In that sense, she is rather unique because not only did she create an amazing story, as many authors have, but she went a step beyond and used the book with the essence of her philosophy, which was, and will always be, a truly daring endeavor for any writer.The Fountainhead has been described in many ways, but at its core it is about The Individual vs. The Collective; about Freedom vs. Conformity.With characters that are gripping, settings that are par excellence, and dialogue that displays incredible depth, the book is a well rounded synthesis about the nature of individualism and what it means to be human.The leading characters all flow through their roles seamlessly, and whether you love them or hate them, you can feel the realism in them, even if at times they are the epitome of Rand’s ideal.Anyone who values individuality will value this book. Those that seek to conform will undoubtedly hate it. That’s the nature of the beast, and always will be. What Rand did though, perhaps better than anyone else, is show both sides of the coin – Individualism vs. Conformity – in a manner that nobody else had brought about through fiction. Through her characters, Rand did a salient job of showing the wide range of latitudes within human nature. All of this was, of course, was to highlight the importance of Individualism.As Rand herself elucidates in the following passages, the last of the three which is in her own words, the prior two through her characters:“Throughout the centuries there were men who took first steps down new roads armed with nothing but their vision. Their goals differed, but they all had this in common: that the step was first, the road new, their vision unborrowed, and the response they received – hatred. The great creators – the thinkers, the artists, the scientists, the inventors – stood alone against the men of their time. Every great new thought was opposed. Every great ne invention was denounced. This book reads like a novel, but it was intended to be more than that--to present an idea in an engaging way. When I rate the characters as "one-dimensional," that is not a negative. This was done deliberately by the author because each character is an archetype of something. I love this book. I read in my youth and I've re-read it recently. A lot happened after Rand wrote this book. She wrote more on the philosophical front and became quite well known, if not recognized. I won't get into that here. I enjoy this book for what it is. My life was made richer by it, and it will always remain one of my favorite reads of all time.
