When people read a book, usually during the first reading you may only understand "a little".. I read this book in the 70's.. During that time I remember only "trying to learn the movements", and the "relaxation instructions"... Honestly...I did not learn anything... with the years and a lot, a lot of more reading about Taiji and learning directly from experts, and seen daily the amount of "youtube"'s information...then you one start to "understand" Taiji a little... and when you can find so many different versions and "styles" of ONE ART.... then you understand that most of them had not grasp the real true meaning of taiji... there may be not one true but many... Then one open his eyes and start 'understanding" it... it will take time to UNDERSTAND Taiji... This is an excellent book! But understand that this is just a book... even a good one... but YOU WILL NEVER LEARN TAICHI WITH A BOOK!!

I practice this specific style of Tai Chi. This book is the one that I have used for 20 years to remind me what I am supposed to be doing. There are pictures with each posture, though in the e-book mode, often they are on the next page or the previous page - not the author's fault, just a casualty of the e-book age. The steps of the Yang Style, short form, are here. The exact steps are here. Do this. Then do that. Then put your hand here. This is, often, what I need to be reminded what I learned, or what I should have learned.There are other books about the various styles of Tai Chi, there are videos on YouTube, DVD's galore: For me, this book is a must-have for my Tai Chi e-bookshelf: I do this form. He wrote the book! All I have to do, is do it!

This is the book I first used to learn this form. Although its not the easiest to learn from it does have photos of Cheng Man -Ching doing the postures so you know they are correct!

I practice a different style of tai chi than Professor Chen Man Ching does but I can tell from reading the book that he is one of the greatest tai chi masters ever. There are five different styles of tai chi but many of the principles are the same. Anyone who practices tai chi could benefit from reading this excellent book.

I bought this book as a teenager (17 or 18 ) but I gave it away hoping it would help the person who I gave it to. Today I just received another copy of it. As for the book it is great and for those who are do it yourself type of person, the benefits obtain are great if you master the form and the mentality.Good luck.

This book, like Zheng's 37 posture form itself, is accurate, concise, and filled with qi (ch'i).It was one of the first good English language books on taijiquan (t'ai chi ch'uan) and contains history, philosophy, the form, and sensing hands applications. It also has an interesting 'mirror image' format to the pictures, and a diagram of the locations of each posture in the form.It is well known that anything Robert W. Smith writes on martial arts is gold. When combined with Zheng's taijiquan, that gold turns to diamond!

I like the descriptions but the photos show positions reverse to the descriptions (e.g., left rather than right), which is very confusing and therefore limits its usefulness.

Outstanding Tai Chi book for the someone wanting to learn the short form of Ch'eng Man-ching. Has foot positions you can copy to put up on wall and is an excellent reference for the serious student.

First read this in college (40+ years ago) and found it an amazing read. Makes a strong statement on individualism, integrity, and principaled living. May lead you to new insights on livinging free and uncompromised. Downloaded it again to read it and remind myself what a real "superman" is. If you like to run with the herd you might not like it. On the other hand it may remind you why it is intellectual death to submit to society's ever changing principals and mores. A must read for all independent thinkers

Startling, in that this work, combined with Atlas Shrugged, shines a beacon on the life of men in such a way that causes a sincere and thorough examination of that which drives me, in my search for excellence and productivity as a man. I had not previously been presented with such a reasonable and clearly spoken verbal picture of the choice all men must make, every day of their lives, often many times a day, between the parasitic versus the creative mindset, and the resulting actions that naturally follow that demonstrate the truth of the decisions we make in each moment. My chosen daily occupation as a builder grants me endless opportunity to make these choices and observe the results of each one, in the viewing of the finished product I have created, and the reception of it by those who are to use what I've built. I can say, resoundingly and without hesitation, that the ideology Ayn Rand has elucidated upon in Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged are without doubt the recipe to living a hero's life of accomplishment and confident honesty. Her description of the tactics and motives of the parasite class connected lots of dots for me that I had previously wondered about (what's wrong with that guy that he would allow himself to build such wretched garbage? What's wrong with the telecom company that it uses intentionally dishonest marketing tactics to squeeze a few extra cents a month from their customers? How can "government officials" wink and turn a blind eye on horrifyingly immoral conduct by huge lending institutions who make it their policy to use predatory and openly fraudulent methods to confiscate property that the owners of depend upon for their shelter and livelihood?) but hadn't taken the time and energy to seriously research and think through. My gratitude to Ayn Rand for helping me along the path to the beginnings of wisdom, and a clearer path forward as a creative force on the planet called earth.

That’s what made her so beloved and hated. Even more so, that’s why people were so bifurcated about her books.Knowing that, then it isn’t shocking to realize that The Fountainhead was written with her very own ideals embedded within every page, within every character, within every thought. In that sense, she is rather unique because not only did she create an amazing story, as many authors have, but she went a step beyond and used the book with the essence of her philosophy, which was, and will always be, a truly daring endeavor for any writer.The Fountainhead has been described in many ways, but at its core it is about The Individual vs. The Collective; about Freedom vs. Conformity.With characters that are gripping, settings that are par excellence, and dialogue that displays incredible depth, the book is a well rounded synthesis about the nature of individualism and what it means to be human.The leading characters all flow through their roles seamlessly, and whether you love them or hate them, you can feel the realism in them, even if at times they are the epitome of Rand’s ideal.Anyone who values individuality will value this book. Those that seek to conform will undoubtedly hate it. That’s the nature of the beast, and always will be. Through her characters, Rand did a salient job of showing the wide range of latitudes within human nature. All of this was, of course, was to highlight the importance of Individualism.As Rand herself elucidates in the following passages, the last of the three which is in her own words, the prior two through her characters:“Throughout the centuries there were men who took first steps down new roads armed with nothing but their vision. Their goals differed, but they all had this in common: that the step was first, the road new, their vision unborrowed, and the response they received – hatred. The great creators – the thinkers, the artists, the scientists, the inventors – stood alone against the men of their time. Every great new thought was opposed. Every great ne invention was denounced. This book reads like a novel, but it was intended to be more than that--to present an idea in an engaging way. When I rate the characters as "one-dimensional," that is not a negative. This was done deliberately by the author because each character is an archetype of something. I love this book. I read in my youth and I've re-read it recently. A lot happened after Rand wrote this book. She wrote more on the philosophical front and became quite well known, if not recognized. I won't get into that here. I enjoy this book for what it is. My life was made richer by it, and it will always remain one of my favorite reads of all time.

This is one of those rare books that you look forward all day to reading in the evening, and when you're getting close to the finish, you wish it had at least twice as many pages. Fortunately, there are two more excellent entries in this trilogy, and each of those is just as good as the first. If you love Norse mythology and are fond of marauding Northmen, trolls, goblins, elves, and dragons, then these books are a particular treat. This is not kid stuff, however—there are occasional strong scenes of violence and killing (especially in the first book), and while they're not so graphic as to earn the trilogy a PG-13 rating, the intended audience is clearly young adults and up.As evidenced by the bibliography at the end of the book, the author thoroughly researched the period and setting. Consequently, she is able to immerse the reader in a vibrant world rich in authentic details and populated with an abundance of fascinating characters full of charm, eccentricities, flaws, and quirks. While you'll definitely come to love or hate some of these people more than others, the philosophical undercurrent woven into the tale never presents any of them—or their actions—as simply good or evil. A valuable lesson to learn, or be reminded of, for young and older adults alike.

I am a lover of Norse Myths. I know them by heart, own several books on them and read everything that has anything to do with them. I've read other "young adult" books from (possibly) more popular authors which are based on Norse mythology and the Vikings (Northmen) but they were disappointing at the best. This story, however, is amazing. The tie ins to culture, beliefs and history are fantastic but the use of the Norse myths and how they work into the fabric of the story is really well done. Unless you're a scholar of the Norse beliefs and stories you're sure to learn something from the book, and if you ARE a scholar - even amateur - you're going to just love the book. Simple as that.

This is a great series--my son and I both really enjoyed it. A good story and a very good sense of the historical world the characters live in, but the best part about it is the complicated relationships: the hero loves his sister even though she never really stops being a brat, he becomes close to the Vikings and appreciates their good qualities even though he knows they're still violent and can be very cruel. Gives kids a lot to think about as well as a good story.

This was a really good book! My husband and I went for a day trip to Grand Marais, MN and we came across this cute book store called Drury Lane. He found this book for me and I bought it on my Kindle when we got home. It was a fun fantasy story full of adventure and humor and never a dull moment. Jack is called to be The Bard's apprentice, so he is taken under his wing to learn the trade. I laughed just reading the cast of characters, so many great ones and not all human. Pick this one up and give it a try! I am an adult and I enjoyed it very much!

As a middle school language arts teacher, I am always looking for books that boys will enjoy, as they are often more reluctant to read than girls. This story of a young boy captured by berserkers, moves quickly enough to keep boys engaged, but I think has enough fairy tale elements in it to appeal to girls as well.This book may not be suitable for students younger than sixth grade, since the descriptions of Viking raids are quite graphic. The story also invites students to grapple with what is true about life and death, as Jack (the protagonist) was raised as a Christian and must measure what he believes against Viking tales of Valhalla. This is definitely a worthwhile read and is ultimately life affirming.

This enchanting saga, a thrilling amalgam of history and Norse mythology, can be enjoyed equally by middle-graders, teens and adults. It has it all: nonstop adventure, fantasy, vividly portrayed characters, lighthearted moments, humor, and an engaging young protagonist named Jack, a Saxon farm boy and bardic apprentice.After Jack and his younger sister, Lucy, are captured and enslaved by berserker Northmen, we meet such distinctive characters as Olaf One-Brow, the alternately disgusting and likable leader of a crew of berserkers; Rune, a skald, or Norse bard, who can no longer sing; Thorgil, a fierce, bloodthirsty girl whose greatest desire is to become a berserker and die gloriously in battle; a troll queen named Glamdis; and shape-shifting half-trolls. And there are lots of birds and beasts, including a noble crow called Bold Heart, Irish wolfhounds, a troll-boar, Freya's cats, and a mother dragon and her dragonlets.And as if this marvelous story and assortment of fascinating characters weren't enough, there's a wonderful, life-affirming message in this book, nothing heavy-handed, but arising clearly from the story itself: that we should all enjoy life while it lasts and not bemoan the fact that one day we will die. It's stated most clearly by the troll queen (and also by Rune the skald, who learned it from her): "To ignore joy while it lasts, in favor of lamenting one's fate, is a great crime."

The characters are engaging and complete. The story is rich and well defined. Hard to put down or if audio hard to turn off. Not just for kids.

I ordered this book for my 6th grader to do a book report for language class. Normally I select and purchase the books well in advance, but this time I was late. I was surprised and delighted at the speed at which we received the book, and with regular mail at that. We could not have asked for faster delivery. The book was in excellent condition. He thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I couldn't get him to put it down to go to bed. The theme and characters were familiar to him,from his electronic games and from playing World of Warcraft (probably explains why he was so engrossed). Needless to say, he aced the book report. Thank you Amazon for getting the book to us so quickly and for having products at such reasonable prices.

I have so many Indian friends here in the USA who have been asking me to visit them back home and this time for vacations im visiting India for the first time to attend one wedding and i thought this is my chance to explore the beautiful place.i loved this guide as it gave me a some light on the most famous cities n places i can visit, modes of transport to use, food to way, places to shop etc. this guide is surely handy for travellers

this was not what we expected. It's not worth the price. It's pamphlet not a book. It has 2 line of things to do in many cities. However, some things they tell you to do or try wouldn't be something for everyone. Such as; eat street food. If you're not from India, or used to it, then the street food will most definitely give you stomach issues. I stopped reading after some of the recommendations that seemed unrealistic.

Excellent reference source with a good number of examples.I used this in parallel with the book by Shu Lin and costello. While the second one lacks many examples, this one helped me a lot to check my codes using many of the examples given in the book.
