Elizabeth Chadwick writes history as it was, with a bit of literary license here and there, but she tells you what she changed at the end of the book. She writes about the medieval period because she is fascinated by it. I have discovered more direct ancestors reading her books than i could ever imagine. I find a name, look it up on a genealogy site and it tells me the relationship, if any. I am so connected to most of the people in her books, it's astounding. Even if you are not connected to the characters,who are real people in history, she brings history to life colorfully. her research is impeccable, her storytelling is beautiful. I had no interest in history before realizing what a huge role my ancestors played in it, but now I am hooked, and Chadwick is one of the main reasons for that.This book is the third in a series on William Marshal. Marshal is a fascinating man, a man of great integrity and political skill, as well as being described by the Archbishop of Canterbury as "the greatest knight" who ever lived. His wife, Isabelle de Clare, was a formidable woman, Very capable of holding down the castle while he was away at war or serving a king -- five in total over the course of his lifetime -- all the while birthing 10 children over the years. These are two of my favorites among my ancestral great-grandparents. Chadwick's books have allowed me to have some sense of who they were and what their lives were like. The two were so close, she lived less than a year after his death, though he was 20 years or more older than she.

If "The Greatest Knight" portrays the spring and summer of William Marshal, this book is the fall and winter. But as in the seasons, the fall of a person's life is bountiful with life's joys and rewards.Marshal had reached the pinnacle of his knighthood, but he was not one to lie among his laurels. He would have to continue fighting for his due. A King would demand the ultimate sacrifice not once, but twice and he would relive his own childhood as a hostage and pawn as he watched helplessly as his two sons were taken by King John in order to force Marshal's compliance. Others would attack his holdings, but the strength that William developed as a tourney knight would hold him steady.Fealty to his word as his guide, Marshal maintained his role as advisor to King John, who needed him but distrusted him at the same time. And though finding himself in years unknown to most of the age, after John's death, he would be called on to serve one last king as regent to nine year old King Henry III.This series of books is well documented and well written. It explores the good and honorable life of a man human enough in his faults but boundless in is love of his wife, family, friends and country.

I love this series. However, I am so confused! Can someone please help me to understand the order of these books? Lol In the William Marshal Series I have read A Place Beyond Courage, The Greatest Knight, and The Scarlet Lion. I understood these were books 1-3. But I am very confused about Book 4 The Time of Singing and Book 5 To Defy a King. Is this the proper order and if yes where does For the King's Favor (William Marshal) fit in?

This was my first Elizabeth Chadwick book and I loved it from the beginning. William Marshal is definitelya man for his time who should have a lot of books and movies about him. I guess he was too good, decentand honest to be a great hero in a movie sense. No dirt! He was associated with Henry II and Eleanorof Acquitaine and their children and 1 grandchild. A very colorful time in history and a great time to bea knight.After some deep genealogical work I learned that I am related to Sir William through two of his daughters.I was in London in 2006 and went to the Knights Templar round church. I took a photograph of some of thestone effigies and looked at them after finding the relationship. I have a picture of Sir William's marker andthe body of someone next to him. That was 6 years before I started the genealogy or I would have knownto take a picture of his effigy! Next time. I have not been back to that church in the 5 or 6 times since I havebeen there after 2006.

A book about my biggest hero during the Medieval times, William Marshall, written by one of my favorite authors, Elisabeth Chadwick, there's just no way to go wrong! The book is simply fantastic and this was one book that never hit the table except for the few hours I had to sleep at night. Otherwise the book was in my hands and nothing was done household wise in my home. It's difficult to tell about the book in a few words but it is without a doubt the most interesting story of probably the greatest man ever lived that actually came from nothing and managed to get it all through his hard work and good, loyal and brave manners together with all the well known other characters of his time. The strength of this man, both mental and physical, just jumps at you from the pages. Boy I wish I had been born at that time and that I would have been fortunate enough to know him. I imagine that I would have followed him in his footsteps like a puppy dog. ONE OF THE ABSOLUTELY MUST READ BOOKS! I LOVED IT !

Disclaimer: usually I hate this sort of book. I thought it would be similar to books (or blogs) I've read before that suggest all of these inane questions recommended for getting to know someone. My partner and I tried a couple of those, but it just felt like we were going through an awkward checklist and not really getting anything out of the experience.I found this book accidentally, and it was a complete game changer. Because of the way the questions are asked, it forces you to talk about issues that may not usually arise when dating (or to talk about them at a deeper level that you might have avoided). And not just issues - hopes, dreams, expectations. Things that may or may not come out in pre-marital counseling. I discovered some dreams my now-FI has about marriage that it would have never occurred to me to ask about. And we have been able to face up to some potentially serious issues in a safe, hypothetical environment - which has allowed us to prepare for handling those issues when the stakes are higher. We are just beginning pre-marital counseling now, and, thanks to this book, we already feel like we have a really solid understanding of our strengths and challenges as a couple.As another reviewer said, the intro wasn't that helpful for us. We skipped it and went straight for the questions.Overall, this book can be a great tool if both people are on board. Because some of the questions get pretty deep - questions about control, family boundaries, reasons why someone would or wouldn't (yikes!) want to spend the rest of their life with you - the key to using this book effectively is having both people completely on board. If one person is more committed than the other or isn't really interested in answering the questions fully, I doubt you'll get much out of it.The biggest benefit for us was using this book to establish a pattern of open, honest communication - even when it comes to uncomfortable topics. For that reason alone, I would recommend this book.

This book is AWESOME! Chock full of deep discussion questions that you wouldn't think to talk about! They leave plenty of space below the question to write down your answers if you so desire. My boyfriend and I are working through this book and are really enjoying spending time together and learning about one another. Hopefully talking about some of these topics now will prevent misunderstandings/arguments in the future! I'll list some of the questions below...2. What is your greatest fear or concern about being married? What have you done to address these concerns?19. What are your beliefs about prenuptial agreements?45. These are all of the activities that I enjoy doing (list them). Of all these things, which ones wouldn't you enjoy doing with me?61. What has been the greatest amount of debt you have experienced?96. Who are the people in your life you've needed to forgive, and how did you accomplish this?

Great book for those who are either in a serious relationship or are newly engaged. It covers a lot of topics that are important in today's relationships. The book basically discusses a situation or a scenario and then each partner is suppose to write down their thoughts and share the idea. I was in a long distance relationship, so we would just flip to a random page, and then discuss the topic. Topics include important subjects like: finances, parenting styles, thoughts on family involvement, careers, hard decisions, etc. Religious and Christian topics are also discussed.

I've recommended this book to no less than 4 friends. I've been married for a year and my husband and I worked through this book while we were dating and engaged. I seriously believe that many people could avoid a bad match if they addressed these questions with a potential spouse before getting engaged. Are the questions easy? Not really, but they are very necessary. Knowing about a persons family life, their values, their spending habits, their parenting approach, and their past relational baggage is not fun stuff, but VITAL if you actually want to avoid divorce. My husband and I just celebrated our first anniversary and we were told the first year is the hardest. It has been wonderful and sooo easy. We've encountered fights and difficulties, but it has been a joy being married to each other. I attribute some of that success to the fact the we covered so much through using this book. I feel that pre-marital counseling could benefit from utilizing this book.

My girlfriend and I are currently going through this book together. Some people mentioned the section at the beginning immediately turning them off of their partner, however that was not the case for my girlfriend and I. None of the issues posed in the front of the book caused us any problems. Some of the questions in the book you may already have discussed (which means you have a healthy relationship where you actually communicate). However, the books that I have not discussed with my girlfriend before buying the book are pretty eye opening. I devoured this book as quick as I could, even with work and life getting in the way I managed to get it finished in 2 sittings. It was amazing. I love the Romeo and Juliet take on the book and even how it is worked within the pages. You will have to read it to find out how it ends though :)I couldn't help loving Jackson from the start. Even when all the drama comes out I stood by his side as I flipped through each page. I found myself wanting to yell at Charlie but I understand it's hard when there are other factors involved that can really upset someone that is really close to you. The budding romance was so adorable I found myself smiling to the point my cheeks hurt. Also the banter between them was enough to make me literally laugh out loud and get weird looks from my other half.This book is set in a mainly a high school but you also get some outside settings of houses and community service locations. I loved getting to follow Charlie around to get more wonderful pictures of her and Jackson into my head.This is a clean romance but it will still leave you with the warm fuzzies as you read through each page. It was so sweet I couldn't help but devour it and love each and every chapter I went through. I found my emotions on a rollercoaster ride needing to know what happens next and I know you all will too!

Courtside Crush is so much fun. I loved Charlie and Jackson. I swear I could feel their connection, it was palpable. I love that Charlie wasn’t your typical goodie goodie or bargirl. She was the perfect combination of good and bad, I mean aren’t we all a little of both? I think this made her super relatable which made me love this book even more. If I had a complaint it would be there wasn’t enough Jackson, because SWOON! Seriously Kayla you could write this story from his perspective and I would gobble it up! Such a great start to what I’m sure will be an amazing series!

She isn't always one to stay out of trouble in the first place, but now her potential for athletic scholarships is in jeopardy because she just wanted to teach Anderson a little lesson for making out with girls who are not Charlie. Really, he's the one at fault here. Even her super protective step-brother agrees. To make things worse, now she has to spend every Saturday volunteering with Marlowe Junction's Helping Hands or she'll be expelled! At least there's a cute guy stuck there, too.This book has all the feel-good romance of a YA contemporary, mixed with the ever present drama of high school, plus an endearing, supportive family. What I loved the most was that I didn't feel like I was being told that Charlie's family was close, or that her best friend was supportive and sassy, or even how sweet of a guy Jackson is, but rather I was shown it by getting a vivid window into their lives. This is captivating writing for me. Charlie's struggles are so raw and seemed to never end—constantly dealing with bad news after bad news with hard decisions all mixed in. In the end, you're absolutely rooting for her as she learns about who she is, and how to stand up for herself when the world sends wave after wave to knock her down.Tirrell's Courtside Crush is a fun sports romance with a refreshing style of storytelling for the genre. Tirrell's writing stayed away from cliche, overly descriptive scenes and characters, which helped me emerge in the book completely because I was allowed to use my imagination. The character development was pretty wonderful, and I found myself completely drawn into Charlie's family dynamic. I will definitely be looking into Tirrell's other books.

I enjoyed reading this book. Charlie might be a little too much sometimes - but let's all blame it to hormones, after all, teenage kids sometimes have problems on controlling their emotions - we have been there, we know the drill. Charlie can be relatable most of the times, she'd remind you of your high school days, and all the dramas that surrounds her. She's brave - I'd give it to her, with all the things she did to her cheating boyfriend. She might not be rational at times, but then again *teenage-hormones waving*.I like her relationship with Pres and her best friend, now if she could have told the truth and save everyone the trouble. But, she tries to save everyone from heartache, which eventually fell back on her. And Jackson, he's such a charming boy who likes her too much. He'd do anything for her.It's a good thing they had it all figured out, but it was quite a bumpy road for Charlie. She came out strong though, as well as her relationship not just with Jackson, but with her friends and family as well.This book stresses out the importance of honesty in all kinds of relationships. If you want a clean, cute YA romance, this one is for you!

It works, I tried it! Scenario: visiting granddaughter glued to phone and laptop. Grandmother tearing her hair out, feeling resentful and wondering why either of them bother. Enter Jeb. Quick look at questions. Grandmother: 'If you could change one thing about your school, what would it be?'Granddaughter, face alight, and accompanying theatricals 'well we have this principal see, and he really shouldn't be principal of a school full of teenagers because .......' there followed half an hour of laughter. We went on to play game of Settlers of Catan which granddaughter was delighted to win for the first time. But the casual question from Jeb's book opened the door ... Dr Denise A Nisbet (and as a Clinical Psychologist you would think that I might be the one with the answers).

Jed Jurchenko has written a brilliant book to jumpstart conversations and create memories with kids. I'm not a kid but I was completely engaged while reading and thinking about the questions the author posed to get into the minds and values of kids without them realizing what is happening.Some questions are fun but others can reveal the character of kids as they begin to grow. Thought provoking and smart, I cannot recommend this book with more enthusiasm. The author calls his work a small book with big goals. I predict it will spur big results and create memories for families who need to get away from the TV and social media and just talk.With the summer upon us, this is a must-bring book for road trips, vacations, and anytime. I'll be recommending it to friends and families, no matter how small or big the kids are! Looking forward to see what Jed writes next!

This book is a great resource for people who need to (or want to) help young people develop real-life conversational skills. I know I can use these conversation starters with my students, and after reading that families spend very little time together each day, I realize how important it will be to do so. But this book isn't just for teachers. Parents will find lots of ways to do it, whether they use the game suggestions in the book or just pick a topic for a drive in the car. I highly recommend this book!

Disclaimer: I'm a teacher and bought this to get ideas for classroom convo starters - if you are doing the same PLEASE USE WITH CAUTION. I didn't realize at first this author is a Christian writer so keep that in mind, some of the questions deal with God and religion which will ostracize some of your students unless you are in a Christian school. Also, these are written for middle/upper class white folk. If you have students that come from poverty, broken homes, or other ethnic backgrounds, these questions may offend or ostracize them as well. Just make sure to vet questions before using to make sure they are inclusive.

He has been dealing with some issues at school and I didn't even learn about it from him. I found out through the guidance counselor at his school. He doesn't communicate with me about important issues and I really hope this book will help me change that.I am very thankful to Jed for writing this book. I think it would/will be helpful to anyone with children in their lives that want better communication between them. I think children want to share with their parents and other important adults in their lives but aren't sure how to or are afraid of the adults reaction and maybe reading this book will give the adult insight into how to be open, welcoming and encouraging when the child does come to them.Excellent Book!! I highly recommend this book to parents, caregivers of children/teens, teachers, guidance counselors, anyone that has interactions with kids.

Conversation is critical to creating the type of bonding that allows a parent to be an influence in their children's lives. Social media, video games, and even current movies and TV bring influences into the lives of our children that may separate this generation from the last. However, that gap can be spanned through simple communication, and by really getting to know your child and teen. Starting conversations with our children was never that hard. However, we adopted a 10 year old son a year ago, and found that we didn't have the shared background that made conversation easy. Just like writing prompts, I'm hoping that these conversation starters will at least be a foundation to many heart-felt conversations in the future.

JJ must be some neat sort of guy! In the Montessori manner Jed teaches us to engage children, get them to use their imagination, have fun, enjoy talking! Using an extremely helpful series of questions, Jed gently encourages children to open up, share and give their opinions on a host of topics: from the White House to Church, from Grandma to buddies, Jed chides and cajoles his way into the very soul of children. Great job, Jed! Highly recommended and part of a series, so check out the others!

A well thought-out book that really gets you thinking. Now that all of us are more disconnected, walking around just looking at our phone screens instead of talking to people, it's time to get reconnected. The author's list of conversation topics is smart, engaging, and fun. Although he says these are for starting conversations with kids, the topics are good for adults too. This is the right book for the right time -- gently teaching kids and adults the lost art of real conversation. I love it!

The author writes good, practical blogs about Microsoft Project on Techrepublic. I've enjoyed them, so I thought I would enjoy this book, but I was a little bit disappointed.The content doesn't go much beyond what most people with a basic knowledge of MS Project would do anyway as far as schedule development. But the part that bothered me the most was that the writing in this book is draft quality rather than publication quality. It has the typical writing errors of something that was thrown together quickly, and it does not appear that the author took the time to reread what he had written (or have someone else review it for him) before publishing it.

All in all, this book was a good deal for the price. The information was short and sweet and to the point, which is exactly what I needed and wanted. However, I couldn't see the diagrams which was a total pain since I don't have MS Project on my computer at home. I tried by viewing the diagrams on my Kindle, then seeing if they showed up any better on my Nexus 10 (they did, but only slightly), and finally, I tried reading the book on my PC and still no luck. The pictures were slightly larger but they were so blurry I could not make out a majority of the text.Again, the information was explained very well, and if I could have actually viewed the diagrams provided of what Project looked like after he entered the appropriate information I would totally rate this with 5 stars. Unfortunately, by not being able to actually see what the end result was, it left me confused many times. And since this is a Kindle only book I just couldn't give it more than 3 stars, especially since I think that should have been taken into account when the book was written.

This book is the best value that I have ever purchased on Amazon. I bought "How to Use Microsoft Project 2010" because I was looking for a tutorial on Project 2010. Since the book was only $9.99, I decided to give it a shot. WOW, was I surprised at the quality of information contained therein. The author, Dr. Andrew Makar, has assembled a great book that has all the information that I was initially looking for with a tutorial, plus a whole lot more. The book does cover how to use the program, however it also covers the strategies and tactics for managing a project. The book starts at MS Project's menu ribbon and ends with advanced topics with 10 steps in the middle.I can't say enough about this book. I recommend this to anyone that uses MS Project, regardless of your skill level.

This was a great overview and refresher and did a good job addressing the reasons behind specific choices, rather than simply focusing on the capabilities of the tool.

I ordered this book on the hunt for a great climbing oriented coffee table book. I will say it's a beautifully bound and produced book and from that perspective is probably worth the price, however it missed the mark in a few ways for my personal preference.The major issue for me was that the book is incredibly text heavy. Now, there's a TON of interesting and I'm sure in many ways useful information in here, but I don't understand why a big coffee table book seemed like the solution to printing this.There are very few images comparatively, which I personally was hoping for more of, and the ones that are printed are small. Even the climbing routes and notes were printed small. I think I prefer more visually appealing coffee table books and though I appreciate having insightful information as well, the balance just felt off here to me. This was more the kind of book that might have been fun to flip through to get me excited on a plane or train ride where I was going to be climbing at my destination.Though I love climbing and I found what copy I read interesting, it also wasn't really well written enough to be particularly engaging. I think this could appeal more to someone who has been on those routes or experienced similar life events.Anyway -- not a bad book, just to me not well executed in terms of being the right style of book for what it accomplishes. It's neither appropriate for a coffee table or your pocket, and though it seems silly even now to me to be rating a book based on its physical production in relation to its content instead of its content alone, it really affected my ability to appreciate it.

We are fortunate that Fred managed to get in the last must-climbs on his list. At 89 it wasn't clear that he'd manage that, but he apparently has. Kudos to all the rope guns that have helped him along the way these past few years.The book is everything you'd expect. The selection of climbs is decidedly not snobbish. It's based on the appeal of the climbs, not technical challenges or bragging rights. It's got routes with 5.11 pitches, and it's got 5.fun routes like the Third Flatiron in Colorado's Front Range.The route descriptions are terse but suffice to give one a good sense of the climb, and the featured rock routes have hand drawn topos. Each climb also has a brief list of caveats that highlight hazards or key route finding beta.Each description includes a personal memoir of Beckey's climbs on the route along with notes on the history and geology of the area. For the most part these are interesting. There are some nice sized photos of the routes themselves as well as some smaller accent pictures of Fred and friends in action.Probably the best use for this book is to motivate the climber bound to her or his home turf to seek out and plan trips to different places and different rocks. This book is very much in the spirit of Steck & Roper's 50 Classic Climbs - a blend of climbing history, geography, photography, route descriptions and practical advice. (About a dozen of the same routes appear in both books.) The big difference, of course, is that Fred Beckey has done all of these climbs himself. It's clearly not intended as an actual guidebook - it's a big, heavy hardcover; most of the descriptions are quite terse; and many routes lack topos - but there's more than enough information here to whet the appetite of climbing enthusiasts, and for many of us there's inspiration for several lifetimes of adventures (few people can hope to emulate Fred Beckey and climb all these routes in a single lifetime). In terms of technical difficulty, almost all of these routes are accessible to average climbers (very few of them are harder than 5.10), but technical difficulty is not the only challenge, since many of them are on big, remote mountains. However, roadside crags like Boulder's Third Flatiron and Eldorado Canyon make their appearance as well. One disappointment is that there aren't as many photos as one could hope for, and many of them are very small, which is surprising for a large coffee-table book.

This book was a christmas gift for my son who is an avid climber; he requested it.. When if arrived I was impressed with its attractiveness, easily a "coffee table" variety.He was very pleased to receive it and I know will enjoy "dreaming" his way through it.

A classic! Great narrative, first class and important routes and wonderful photos. A must for a climbers library.

Beautiful book, unfortunately I've given in to the idea that I won't have the time to finish all these peaks. I better start climbing at a younger age in my next life.

I bought this for my first graders as part of our job unit. As far as the text goes, it is perfect. There is rich vocabulary, but it isn't so wordy that little ones stop listening.However, every single cop in the book is white. There is one black cop on the cover, and after that, it is all white people. I want my black kids to see themselves in books. This one misses the mark.

This book is intended for younger children. I read it with my kinders, and it was long enough to learn from but not to long that the lost interest. Though is talks a little about the day to day of being a police officer, it also brings in the different types of police officers... ones who rides motorcycles, bicycles, boats, etc. The kids found it interesting for they had never considered that police officers are in those place.

This book shows different police officers and what different kinds of jobs they do. It has all real pictures and is part of a series of "I want to be" books. My daycare has loved and responded well to all of the books in this series...a great addition to any early childhood setting.

Only book anywhere about police for 2nd graders.

Clear, defined pictures that relate to policing in the United States. Excellent for young children.
