I will give credit for accuracy on many parts but to do that with the unknown was ahorrible twist and hated it for that. It is sacred to so many and to do that or even imply that was wrong especially since zo read it on Nov 11th.

Tremendous amount of research went into the novel. History must be preserved so that one can understand how easily we forget the patterns of behavior that have shaped our lives. Personally, there was too much blood and gore and a fairly week love story underlining it all.

The tragedy of pathos of the protagonist make this book impossible to put down. The doomed love affair and inevitable consequence are an anticipated but no less compelling when you reach that part of the story. The ending may have been the best part, but i won't spoil it. Enthusiastically recommended, but you may need tissues.

The opening chapter of "Winter of the World" is incredibly sad. So sad, in fact, the reader is challenged to go on. Nonetheless, reading on is a great reward. Carol Ann Lee has captured as best a 21st century novel can the horror of the World War I battlefield and the terror of the trenches on the northern end of the Western Front. There is, of course, more than a war story in this novel. There is romance--the romantic urgency brought on by war. There are personal dilemmas tracing back to pre-war events and their own horrors. This is a very well written novel and as I read it I wondered how Carol Ann Lee could capture the emotion and the incredibly difficulty of the times and places in Northern France and Western Belgium in 1914 and 1915. She is a skillful writer and obviously a good researcher. The characters are real and identifiable as people I could know. I recommend this book to everyone who likes a good historical novel. This is book is especially poignant as the centennial of the beginning of World War I approaches.

A beauty written story of love and loss during the Great War. I was hooked from the very beginning. I actually sobbed when I learned the identity of the honored person being taken to his burial.

Did not like the ending. Confusing. Story held my interest. I read a lot of historical work. This one was just ok for me.

This is a book for lovers of historical fiction. It’s interesting, thought provoking, and a glimpse into past

About the Author

Wally Paton is the author of Back to Basics--The Alcoholics Anon-ymous BeginnersÂ’ Meetings and How to Listen to God--A Guide for Successful Living Through the Practice of Two-way Prayer. He is the originator of the Back to Basics BeginnersÂ’ Meetings, which have grown to more than 2,500 groups, and produced more than 150,000 recoveries since its reintroduction into the Twelve-Step community in 1997. This original 12-Step meeting format was a phenomenal success during the 1940Â’s and 1950Â’s, but had become an all but lost piece of history until Wally rediscovered it. Wally started his 12-Step spiritual journey on October 30,1988. The following year, his sponsor told him, "If you don't know where we came from, you'll never know what a miracle this program truly is." Wally took this challenge to heart and set out to learn all he could about the early days of the Twelve Step Movement. In the spring of 1993, Wally was in Washington, DC conducting research for his first book, But, for the Grace of God, which dealt with the explosive growth of the Twelve-Step movement in the 1940Â’s. While sorting through some archival materials, he came across a 20-page pamphlet, published in 1944, which described in detail how one of the local groups was taking newcomers through the Twelve Steps in four one-hour sessions. In his subsequent travels throughout the United States, Wally found many reprints of this pamphlet along with various formats for conducting BeginnersÂ’ Meetings. In addition, he interviewed more than one hundred "old-timers" who had recovered in the 1940Â’s. Many told him the BeginnersÂ’ Meetings had saved their lives, and they were disappointed when the meetings were replaced with other formats in the 1960Â’s and 1970Â’s. Wally researched the BeginnersÂ’ Meetings for two more years. Then in the fall of 1995, WallyÂ’s spiritual advisor challenged him to stop talking about the four one-hour sessions and start doing something about them. He said, "Wally, if you're ever going to learn how to fly, you have to get out of flight school and climb into the plane." This was a scary proposition for someone who had a phobia about speaking in public. But Wally walked through the fear and started conducting the BeginnersÂ’ Meetings. But, for the first year, Wally "flew the plane" right into the ground. Even though he thought he was being true to the original program, he had inadvertently incorporated some material from the 1970Â’s into the BeginnersÂ’ Meetings, and as a result, he wasnÂ’t seeing the recovery rates that had been achieved by the Twelve Step pioneers. Then in March of 1996, Wally met James Houck. At the time, James was 90 years old and had been a sober member of the Oxford Group for sixty-one years. Bill W. and Dr. Bob S. also were members of the Oxford Group before they founded Alcoholics Anonymous in 1939. James was the last person alive who had attended Oxford Group meetings with Bill W. and knew, from first hand experience, the spiritual roots and the fundamental principles of the "Big Book" and the original Twelve Step program. James provided Wally with three missing concepts from the original program that allowed him to successfully "fly the plane." They were: (1) the verbal Fourth Step (moral inventory), (2) the expanded Ninth Step that included forgiveness as well as restitution, and (3) the written Eleventh Step (prayer and meditation). He supplied Wally with a four-page pamphlet, written in 1938 by a person who had attended Oxford Group meetings with Dr. Bob. This pamphlet, titled "How to Listen to God," provided clear, concise directions on how to conduct two-way prayer. Since that eventful meeting in 1996, Wally and James have been traveling across the United States carrying the message of the Twelve Step pioneers at Back to Basics and How to Listen to God seminars. For members of AA, or other 12 step -based programs, this book will astound you as to how it was done in the beginning. All 12 steps completed in three or four sessions. They literally had cards they carried and had to be approved to attend meetings. Card-carrying members only. Fascinating. I don’t recommend we go back to these days, but success rate was outstanding ( like 80 to 85% long-term sobriety) and I have definitely learned some valuable concepts.

Oh what a wonderful book! Its a great read. Especially for someone who has been in the program for a bit. I really feel like it has made me a better sponsor. This book is a great in a group or alone. I have worked with this book in both situations, both I found useful.

12 steps in four weeks – way to maintain a sober lifestyle.This also has the pages correlated to the Alcoholics Anonymous big blue book and have a lot of art table and historical information that has been proven to be accurate according to the WSO.

This is the book I use to help my sponsees get through the 12 Steps. It is a clear explanation of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous.

This books and a specific group using this book is what finally got me sober. I have seen it work for others too. This book and its suggested approach cut to the core of getting the work needed to become sober done. No where in this book or in any of the B2B meetings I have attended do they suggest a cure or that you are done with the 12 Steps in a month. The key for me was getting thru the steps all the way in a short time. Too much time is spent dragging the steps out. Any fear of not doing them correctly or too quickly was nonsense for me. Using this book and the B2B meetings I learned more about the Steps and actually doing them in a month than I had in several prior sobriety attempts. B2B is a great starter to get someone INTO AA, not as a replacement for AA. In my humble opinion, far too many AA groups have endless "open discussion" meetings that do not focus on actually doing the work needed to get sober. B2B gets you involved, working and progressing quickly, and it clearly outlines that success comes from working the Steps again, and again, and again and again until it becomes second nature and a way of life. I am a die-hard AA member and love the program. I used B2B as a supplement to AA and it worked for me.As for the negative reviews, read them carefully. One writer states that they "will not allow" sponsee's near B2B, while others attack this book and its approach simply because it is NOT AA approved. What I hear in the negative reviews are fearful, uncentered egos bashing something just because it is "not ours" and if you used "that" you are "not one of us" and that makes you less.Read the book, take what you need and leave the rest. I would also recommend "A New Earth" by Tolle. AA meetings, the fellowship, B2B and the understanding of human nature from A New Earth all contributed to me getting sober after nearly 40 years of drinking.

This is an extraordinary book in helping people in recovery "pull the meat" out of the first 164 pages of the Big Book. I highly recommend it for groups or one-one-one, especially sponsorship.

I lost my original book & this was a replacement. Excellent Step Study & so helpful in working the Steps with newcomers. Absolutely integral in helping newcomers get into the Steps right away as well as helpful to any of us regardless of how long or how short a time we've been around AA.

I ironically began reading the In Death series in 90's , when a friend challenged me to read something sci-fi/suspense. Her favorite genre. I was more of a paranormal genre fan. Naked In Death is what sounded interesting to me that day in the book store. I have since read all 44 books and consider myself a fan of both Eve and Roarke. The series is more futuristic /romance/ suspense.This is the 3rd time I have read Naked in Death. Although it is a book that I do re-read there are things about the book that keep me from giving it more than a 3 1/2 stars.We meet Lieutenant Eve Dallas who has been a New York police officer for 10 year's. She has been selected along with her former partner and trainer Captain Feeney. To investigate the murder of Sharon DeBlass the granddaughter of a sitting United States senator. Roarke is a secretive billionaire that was known to have dinner with the victim the night before her murder.Spoiler Of Sensitive Topic BelowSub-plot Warning: This book, as well as the series wouldn't be for everyone. As it deals with rape and incest. We learn that Eve was brutalized at a very young age . Being found in a alley at the age of 8 and has no real memory of the year's before being found. The subjects are graphically discussed. Making the story one that is very dark and could be triggering to those sensitive to such storylines. I thought it was a topic that was handled. In a manner that wasn't derogatory in the end.Overall I liked the strong female police officer who is also a survivor. While not really caring for the political themes which really haven't progressed much in the late 2050's. The romantic aspects are interesting and a bit amusing at times.The cases normally begin and end within one book. I wouldn't really call these books stand alone because each book does build relationships of various characters and their lives, roles along with background. I would recommend this series and book to others.

I've read this series a couple of years back when I was still a student (had more time to read then) and I loved it! The problem was that I used to borrow the hardcopies from libraries, hence I had to read whatever was available in the library instead of going chronologically down the series. Bought a kindle recently, and the first book that came to mind was this! And I still love it reading it the second time as much as I did the first time :) I can't wait to go down the series one by one!There are two things that intrigue me most when I got started on Book 1 of this fantastic series; firstly, to know more about this futuristic world where interplanetary travel is very much possible, and secondly, to follow the development of the lead couple who seem so different in characters, yet so perfect for one another.Reading this series is like watching a TV serial for me. I love it that the books are still coming out year after year. I strongly encourage those who love crime-related cum romance novels to get started on these!

So I am gonna start with the parts of this series that I liked and that made me keep reading even the times I wanted to smack the lead charecters or throw my reader in frustration or simply just went alright already we got it so please stop with these stupid repeating dreams.. THEY ARE BORING... or when another sex scene was there.. and wow I just made this series sound horrible... but it really isn’t.. it just have a lot of elements that are, in my opinion, really really stupid... but back to the good parts... I love the detective parts.. sure there are some plot overlaps in the books because okay how many different murders can you really imagine, but there are some that are truly spectactular. The Icove case being the most memorable.. but with that being said for crying out loud let Eve sleep at some point.. the amount of sleep jd wants us to think Eve survives by should make her brain not function nearly enough to be a good cop..Now onto the things i hate in this series.. I will admit to liking romances.. or rather books that have some element of romance in them.. without it I rarely find a book interesting.. don’t know why.. but the “romance” in this book? I simply have no words... I first heard about these book because of a “best couples in books” list and roarke and eve was at the top.. after having read the series I cannot understand why... you put eve with roarke and you get the transformation from a steelspined intelligent cop to pathetic spineless doormat.. she lets Roarke do whatever he wants and even when she gets mad he just have to yell a bit about all he does for her and she caves... and this is most apparent when it comes to other women... here are some facts.. the series are 40 something books plus novellas but only covers about 3-4 years.. and in every single one of them Eve has to deal with a beautiful clever acomplished woman that has slept with her husband.. that is over 40 women in about 4 years she gets thrown into her face, many of them telling her how they where together how he was the best sex of their life how they would steal him from her if possible etc. that is about one woman a month she gets a graphic reminder of her husbands past. and ALWAYS roarke’s reaction is oh it was just sex no biggie.. and it is often remarked how these women are only a small fraction of the ones he’s had sex with.. he also constantly comments on beautiful women.. incl the ones he’s slept with.. like Eve says about one of his exes that she prob. paid for her body and he is all but how well spend those money where... and all of this Eve just accept.. in book 4 she comes home to see before mentioned bought body kiss her husband... and he does nothing, in fact laughs at her when she gets a little bit jealoux... and these sort of situations constantly happens.. he works with many of the women and a LOT of them wants him back... but Eve just has to deal... and then there is THE ex.. the one he was actually in love with.. the one he keeps meeting alone and not telling Eve about even though she told him she didn’t want him to.. you know basically cheats on her with even if he didn’t sleep with her... and again Eve does nothing... and in fact later on feels like she can’t tell Roarke how she didn’t like a woman because she reminded her of THE ex, because oh no what if it hurts HIS feelings... and in all of this we are ever only told about ONE, I repeat ONE of Eves former lovers.. and what happens? Well he’s in love with Eve and decides to kiss her (something one of Roarkes exes did to him in front of Eve without Roarke doing anything) and Eve pretty much punches him for doing it.. and Roarkes reaction? He goes balistic and ends up FIGHTING this other man that Eve so very clearly is not interested in... in other words Roarks past is okay but Eve’s is not? She should be okay with him having slept with half the women in the world but really how could she not be a pristine little virgin when he decided he wanted her... I can’t decide if this is general societal view on genderroles or just a really screwed up relationship.. probably both...And while we are on relationships... Charles Monroe and Louise Dimatto... I refuse to believe if you love someone you are just going to be completely 100% okay with your significant other sleeping with other women, romancing them.. no matter how much you tell yourself it is only a job, it is not... as a man you can’t exactly fake being sexually aroused now can you.. you can’t go oh look at my super realistic strapon and no that is not my D hanging limp there it is a third ball... their relationship is not that of people who love each other.. it is one of two F buddies who think they love each other because they haven’t found one they actually do yet.. they’d know the difference...

It’s a little unsettling how close to today’s political climate this book finds itself when it’s set years and years in the future.In the beginning, it threw me off a little to have a story about a cop set in a time when guns are considered collector’s items. But once I got used to the premise, JD Robb’s style of writing swept me up and I had to find out whodunnit.So many times the tension in a book like this is fabricated in the romantic relationship instead of naturally developing from the crime. Not here. Neither of the people in the relationship are perfect, and they have baggage and lots of issues, but they communicate and respect each other. Their ability to have a healthy relationship despite lots of roadblocks allows the reader to stay focused on the crime and where the story is going.I’m ready for the next in the series!

I rarely give anything five stars, but I'll give this one five...even allowing for Leahy's reflexive (like all sportswriters) occasional liberal asides. For one thing it's not a suck-up book, but Leahy does give Jordan the level of respect he deserves the times he deserves it. But it's a rare thing...an honest portrayal of an athletic god who revealed himself to be a lot less than that in his comeback. Despite being a huge basketball fan, I rarely watched any of Jordan's games with the Wizards. The whole thing was pointless...just something to satisfy the ego of an over-the-hill player who if he wanted to play again should have gone to a contending team and subordinated his talents to that team. But Jordan couldn't do that. He still had to be the man on a mediocre club. The Wizards "improved" somewhat during Jordan's two years, but it's hard to see that other the extra income accrued to the Wizards thanks to Jordan's comeback, how he helped the team. The last thing a poor to mediocre club needs is an ex-superstar who thinks he can be the big star again when his body tells him he can't. But I liked Leahy's book for other reasons as well. Most sports books recite the stats but fail to delineate how the player did it. But Leahy describes Jordan's play. How he got his points and how he got stuffed. I got the feeling after reading many sports bios in the last few years that the writers were quite unable to describe how their subject did it. But Leahy knows the game and was able to relate the levels of skill and talent exhibited by pro players necessary to make it in the NBA. It's an unflinching, candid look at certainly one of the greatest athletes to ever play any sport and maybe the greatest basketball player ever. Leahy does his job knowing that his subject would freeze him out. Which gives Leahy a level of integrity far above the usual posterior smoochers in the press. I doubt this book will hurt Jordan's reputation too much. When he was a star he was known for his arrogance, egotism and nastiness. His level of superstardom protected him from the usual criticism leveled at most superstars when people find out they've feet of clay. But it is refreshing to know that not every sportswriter falls victim to the phony love phrases about their subject often offered by scribblers. This overall unflattering look at Jordan (and some of his sycophants in the media like Michael Wilbon) is an excellent antidote to all paeans of praise generally written about very human athletes.

It has often been the case that we tend to etch our hopes and dreams in the coattails of superstar athletes who exceed our expectations time and again. Each time, the bar is raised until the star is brought down to earth by these same expectations that made them stars in the first place.Such is the tale provided by Michael Leahy in this definitive work on Michael Jordan's comeback with the Wizards. The account provides details from Jordan's start as an executive to his comeback and to his eventual firing (not unexpected as it first seemed).Interesting details abound in this book in contrast to the droning sound bites found in newspapers who seem quite reluctant to call out the naked emperor. Examples include the true extent of Jordan's tendinitis, the effect of Jordan's injury to his right index finger plus Phil Jackson's thoughts on the comeback. Also, Leahy provides quite a convincing critique not only on Jordan the player but on Jordan the playing executive as well.My only problem with this book is that it tends to get repetitive at times - Pollin's firing of Jordan and the Karla Knafel story is retold more than once. However, it stands on its own in chronicling Jordan's days as a Wizard which luckily for Jordan will always remain a footnote to an otherwise marvelous career.Most of us would have considered that jump shot at Salt Lake City the highlight of our lives, but then again Mike still has more than half of his life to live.

Leahy's a good reporter; just not nearly as good as he thinks he is. He took advantage of the access being from The Washington Post gave him, but the book is at least 100 pages too long. To be fair, lots of books are 100 pages too long. If you are going to write about sports in any context, you better come to the table with a respect for the craft because it isn't as easy as a lot of news reporters think. Leahy lacked that from start to finish. This could have been a very good book; instead it was barely okay.

A well-written book that seems mostly critical of Jordan's decision to return for two final years with the Washington Wizards.Fascinating look into the daily life of the world's greatest basketball player trying to wring what was left of his fading skills.If I have a criticism - the book seems to bash Jordan for tainting his legacy. In my opinion, it's Jordan's legacy to taint.

The sections dealing with the Japanese peace feelers following the Invasion of Okinawa, their subsequent efforts to accept the Potsdam Declaration in spite of fanatics within the military who, even after the atomic bombs and Russian entry into the war, would rather have seen national self-immolation than surrender.This book is a must read for any serious student of military history. No book on the Japanese in World War II written by a non-Japanese author goes so far to in explaining the complexities and confluence of events and personalities that determined the outcome of events.

This is a great book. As others have noted the book is only about the war with Japan, and from somewhat of a Japanese point of view.Possibly this book doesn't touch on enough of the terrible things that happened in the war in the Pacific, but the book, like most books about WW2, is still fascinating and horrifying.Toland does a great job of noting some particularly moving and poignant moments in the war, many of the stories are terribly sad, but people of today should know how horrible WW2 was, hopefully there'll never be another war on that scale.Toland was a great author, the book is very readable and engrossing, highly recommended if you're interested in the war in the Pacific.

This is the most balanced and informative analysis of Hirohito's Japan and the Pacific War that I have ever read. I see that about 80% of the customer reviews are positive (four or five stars). The handful of negative reviews seem to reflect the attitude that all of Japan's leaders were war criminals, that America did nothing to provoke war, that Japan offered no reasonable concessions to try to avoid war, that only Japanese forces committed war crimes, and that Japan had to be nuked to end the war without an invasion.Toland does not hesitate to criticize the Japanese when he feels the evidence warrants it. His book is by no means some kind of one-sided or partisan apology for Japan, and I truly don't know how any objective person could read the book and say otherwise. What Toland does do is provide often-ignored facts and context regarding Japan's actions in Manchuria, China, and Indochina; Japan's peace overtures to FDR to try to avoid war; the conduct of Japanese and Allied forces during the war; Japan's relations with the Asian countries that it wrested from Allied control; and the events that did--and did not--lead to Japan's surrender.

I have read many books on the Japanese and their involvement in the Pacific War, from books about individual battles to specific aircraft and ships that fought in this war. This book, along with "A Glorius Way To Die," is among my favorites.Back in the late 1960s when this book was written, there was very little published outside Japan about the Japanese and their involvement in the Pacific War. Books by Mitsuo Fuchida, Mochitsura Hashimoto and Tameich Hara, among others, started giving us the Japanese perspective of the war. These books helped initiate what has become a life-long interest and fascination with Japanese side of the Pacific War, including their government, people and their military. I subsequently began reading books and building models of their planes, ships and tanks. Not surprisingly, I finally read "The Rising Sun" and couldn't put it down.Both my father and uncle (identical twins) fought the Japanese in World War II and, needless to say, had very negative things to say about them. But they both read this book and enjoyed it, and recommended that I read it. I'm glad I did. I still have the original two volume set my father purchased.The chapters leading up to the opening of the Pacific War will be illuminating to those who are unfamiliar with how Japan evolved from a feudal state through the Meiji revolution to the nation it was in the first half of the 20th century. Toland accurately describes 1930s Japan as having one foot in the modern era and one foot in the fuedal era, along with stating that Imperial Japan was interested in Western technology but not Western values. He also sheds light on how the complete array of differences between America and Japan, along with the turbulent times in the late 1930s, led to mutual distrust - and war.Another value of this book is showing the human side - both good and bad - of the Japanese from Emperor Hirohito down to the lowest Jotohei (private first class) as well as the average Japanese man and woman on the street and the war's impact on them.The chapters dealing with the invasion of Saipan, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the debate among the Emperor, the military and the civilian government about continuing the war are well written and fascinating. Also, the accounts of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb raids are riveting. Throughout the book, Toland does an excellent job of interjecting the personal perspective of individuals into the history of a particular battle or issue.There are only two negatives that I would give this book. In the text about the Greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, Toland does a good job of describing the rising aspirations of Asians to be viewed as co-equals of white men in the world, but tended to downplay that Japan wanted to dominate all of the nations it was giving "freedom" from colonialism. The other is that the book was written in the late 1960s and new information has been discovered that has either altered what Toland wrote about or contradicted it. A good example is with the chapter about the Battle of Midway - the book "Shattered Sword" disclosed new information about the state of the Japanese carriers at the time U.S. Navy dive bombers attacked them.I highly recommend this book
