When Nothing Else Matters: Michael Jordan's Last Comeback, by Michael Leahy

From Publishers Weekly

After serving as president and part owner of the Washington Wizards for two years, Jordan, bored by his executive duties and frustrated by the team's poor play, returned to the court in 2001 in a bid to revitalize the struggling basketball franchise. But the aging superstar's attempt to resurrect the team flopped as the Wizards failed to make the playoffs in either of Jordan's two playing seasons. While the highs and lows of Jordan's comeback are known to most basketball fans, Leahy, a Washington Post feature writer who covered Jordan's return, offers an in-depth look at the inner turmoil that plagued the Jordan-led Wizards. In a smartly written, often angry work that is as much a sports story as a psychology study and condemnation of the media that built up the Jordan myth, Leahy not only documents Jordan's performance on the floor, but examines what motivated him to play despite serious knee problems. Leahy also deals with the role sportswriters (he makes it clear he isn't one) play in building America's athletes into godlike characters, a practice he abhors. Leahy has no use for idol worship and casts all three of the book's main figures—Jordan, coach Doug Collins and majority owner Abe Pollin—in unfavorable lights. This engaging read is marred by one flaw: Leahy's tendency to insert himself into the story. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist

Michael Jordan may have been the greatest basketball player ever to lace 'em up, but he has not always been a likable man. At 38, three years retired from his championship run in Chicago, Jordan was serving as president of the Washington Wizards when he decided to join the team as a player. Washington Post staffer Leahy observed it all, from the triumphs--now and then MJ did seem to be an ageless wonder--to the very ugly moments of humiliated coaches and teammates who did not measure up to Jordan's personal standard of excellence and acquiescence. This is not a pretty portrayal of Jordan, but it is consistent with the assessment of his strengths and weaknesses offered by Sam Smith in The Jordan Rules (1991). If anything, this account is tinged with melancholy in its portrayal of the alpha male finally being exiled from the herd. This is an intelligent, persuasively written account of an athlete who remains one of our most recognizable celebrities. Expect the phone lines to be buzzing on the sports talk shows. I rarely give anything five stars, but I'll give this one five...even allowing for Leahy's reflexive (like all sportswriters) occasional liberal asides. For one thing it's not a suck-up book, but Leahy does give Jordan the level of respect he deserves the times he deserves it. But it's a rare thing...an honest portrayal of an athletic god who revealed himself to be a lot less than that in his comeback. Despite being a huge basketball fan, I rarely watched any of Jordan's games with the Wizards. The whole thing was pointless...just something to satisfy the ego of an over-the-hill player who if he wanted to play again should have gone to a contending team and subordinated his talents to that team. But Jordan couldn't do that. He still had to be the man on a mediocre club. The Wizards "improved" somewhat during Jordan's two years, but it's hard to see that other the extra income accrued to the Wizards thanks to Jordan's comeback, how he helped the team. The last thing a poor to mediocre club needs is an ex-superstar who thinks he can be the big star again when his body tells him he can't. But I liked Leahy's book for other reasons as well. Most sports books recite the stats but fail to delineate how the player did it. But Leahy describes Jordan's play. How he got his points and how he got stuffed. I got the feeling after reading many sports bios in the last few years that the writers were quite unable to describe how their subject did it. But Leahy knows the game and was able to relate the levels of skill and talent exhibited by pro players necessary to make it in the NBA. It's an unflinching, candid look at certainly one of the greatest athletes to ever play any sport and maybe the greatest basketball player ever. Leahy does his job knowing that his subject would freeze him out. Which gives Leahy a level of integrity far above the usual posterior smoochers in the press. I doubt this book will hurt Jordan's reputation too much. When he was a star he was known for his arrogance, egotism and nastiness. His level of superstardom protected him from the usual criticism leveled at most superstars when people find out they've feet of clay. But it is refreshing to know that not every sportswriter falls victim to the phony love phrases about their subject often offered by scribblers. This overall unflattering look at Jordan (and some of his sycophants in the media like Michael Wilbon) is an excellent antidote to all paeans of praise generally written about very human athletes.

It has often been the case that we tend to etch our hopes and dreams in the coattails of superstar athletes who exceed our expectations time and again. Each time, the bar is raised until the star is brought down to earth by these same expectations that made them stars in the first place.Such is the tale provided by Michael Leahy in this definitive work on Michael Jordan's comeback with the Wizards. The account provides details from Jordan's start as an executive to his comeback and to his eventual firing (not unexpected as it first seemed).Interesting details abound in this book in contrast to the droning sound bites found in newspapers who seem quite reluctant to call out the naked emperor. Examples include the true extent of Jordan's tendinitis, the effect of Jordan's injury to his right index finger plus Phil Jackson's thoughts on the comeback. Also, Leahy provides quite a convincing critique not only on Jordan the player but on Jordan the playing executive as well.My only problem with this book is that it tends to get repetitive at times - Pollin's firing of Jordan and the Karla Knafel story is retold more than once. However, it stands on its own in chronicling Jordan's days as a Wizard which luckily for Jordan will always remain a footnote to an otherwise marvelous career. Most of us would have considered that jump shot at Salt Lake City the highlight of our lives, but then again Mike still has more than half of his life to live.

Leahy's a good reporter; just not nearly as good as he thinks he is. He took advantage of the access being from The Washington Post gave him, but the book is at least 100 pages too long. To be fair, lots of books are 100 pages too long. If you are going to write about sports in any context, you better come to the table with a respect for the craft because it isn't as easy as a lot of news reporters think. Leahy lacked that from start to finish. This could have been a very good book; instead it was barely okay.

It was great book it was great read. I love the way they do people with wizards front office it was great.

A well-written book that seems mostly critical of Jordan's decision to return for two final years with the Washington Wizards.Fascinating look into the daily life of the world's greatest basketball player trying to wring what was left of his fading skills. If I have a criticism - the book seems to bash Jordan for tainting his legacy. In my opinion, it's Jordan's legacy to taint.

Great insight to Jordan. It changes your opinion of him as a person.

This is the Pacific War from the Japanese point of view. Toland deftly explores the events leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor and the unique facets of Japanese society and the military clique that was running their government that led them to invading China and ultimately to war with the U.S. and the allied powers. He includes, not just the stories of the leaders, but also of average civilians, foot soldiers, and sailors to tie the story together and give it context and his treatment of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are detailed, including the deliberations leading up to the decision to use the bomb and the reaction of the Japanese leaders to it. The sections dealing with the Japanese peace feelers following the Invasion of Okinawa, their subsequent efforts to accept the Potsdam Declaration in spite of fanatics within the military who, even after the atomic bombs and Russian entry into the war, would rather have seen national self-immolation than surrender. This book is a must read for any serious student of military history. No book on the Japanese in World War II written by a non-Japanese author goes so far to in explaining the complexities and confluence of events and personalities that determined the outcome of events.

This is a great book. As others have noted the book is only about the war with Japan, and from somewhat of a Japanese point of view.Possibly this book doesn't touch on enough of the terrible things that happened in the war in the Pacific, but the book, like most books about WW2, is still fascinating and horrifying.Toland does a great job of noting some particularly moving and poignant moments in the war, many of the stories are terribly sad, but people of today should know how horrible WW2 was, hopefully there'll never be another war on that scale.Toland was a great author, the book is very readable and engrossing, highly recommended if you're interested in the war in the Pacific.

This is the most balanced and informative analysis of Hirohito's Japan and the Pacific War that I have ever read. I see that about 80% of the customer reviews are positive (four or five stars). The handful of negative reviews seem to reflect the attitude that all of Japan's leaders were war criminals, that America did nothing to provoke war, that Japan offered no reasonable concessions to try to avoid war, that only Japanese forces committed war crimes, and that Japan had to be nuked to end the war without an invasion.Toland does not hesitate to criticize the Japanese when he feels the evidence warrants it. His book is by no means some kind of one-sided or partisan apology for Japan, and I truly don't know how any objective person could read the book and say otherwise. What Toland does do is provide often-ignored facts and context regarding Japan's actions in Manchuria, China, and Indochina; Japan's peace overtures to FDR to try to avoid war; the conduct of Japanese and Allied forces during the war; Japan's relations with the Asian countries that it wrested from Allied control; and the events that did--and did not--lead to Japan's surrender.

I have read many books on the Japanese and their involvement in the Pacific War, from books about individual battles to specific aircraft and ships that fought in this war. This book, along with "A Glorius Way To Die," is among my favorites.Back in the late 1960s when this book was written, there was very little published outside Japan about the Japanese and their involvement in the Pacific War. Books by Mitsuo Fuchida, Mochitsura Hashimoto and Tameich Hara, among others, started giving us the Japanese perspective of the war. These books helped initiate what has become a life-long interest and fascination with Japanese side of the Pacific War, including their government, people and their military. I subsequently began reading books and building models of their planes, ships and tanks. Not surprisingly, I finally read "The Rising Sun" and couldn't put it down. Both my father and uncle (identical twins) fought the Japanese in World War II and, needless to say, had very negative things to say about them. But they both read this book and enjoyed it, and recommended that I read it. I'm glad I did. I still have the original two volume set my father purchased. The chapters leading up to the opening of the Pacific War will be illuminating to those who are unfamiliar with how Japan evolved from a feudal state through the Meiji revolution to the nation it was in the first half of the 20th century. Toland accurately describes 1930s Japan as having one foot in the modern era and one foot in the fuedal era, along with stating that Imperial Japan was interested in Western technology but not Western values. He also sheds light on how the complete array of differences between America and Japan, along with the turbulent times in the late 1930s, led to mutual distrust - and war.Another value of this book is showing the human side - both good and bad - of the Japanese from Emperor Hirohito down to the lowest Jotohei (private first class) as well as the average Japanese man and woman on the street and the war's impact on them. The chapters dealing with the invasion of Saipan, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the debate among the Emperor, the military and the civilian government about continuing the war are well written and fascinating. Also, the accounts of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb raids are riveting. Throughout the book, Toland does an excellent job of interjecting the personal perspective of individuals into the history of a particular battle or issue. There are only two negatives that I would give this book. In the text about the Greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, Toland does a good job of describing the rising aspirations of Asians to be viewed as co-equals of white men in the world, but tended to downplay that Japan wanted to dominate all of the nations it was giving "freedom" from colonialism. The other is that the book was written in the late 1960s and new information has been discovered that has either altered what Toland wrote about or contradicted it. A good example is with the chapter about the Battle of Midway - the book "Shattered Sword" disclosed new information about the state of the Japanese carriers at the time U.S. Navy dive bombers attacked them.I highly recommend this book

As a student of history and a lifelong Bears fan, I thoroughly enjoyed Papa Bear. Halas accomplished some amazing things in his lifetime, and yet made many mistakes along the way. The author did a fair job of painting Halas as a strong but at the same time flawed individual. He lays bare the mistakes Halas made and those of the organization for the 20 years following his death, up through about 2003. Beware, Bears fans, those last few chapters are very upsetting! (more so than the team's 2016 record of 3-13)Ultimately, for me, Papa Bear summons strong emotions because of my own ties to the city of Chicago, the Bears, Wrigley Field, the University of Illinois, and the Chicago neighborhoods involved in George Halas' life story. His is an amazing story, and some fascinating people and sub plots are woven in throughout. There is certainly humor and triumph. In the end, for me, and I suspect for many modern day Bears fans, this story is a tragedy. I am left wondering, what might have been...? If you enjoy history and the sport of football, read this book!

This is the best book on the Chicago Bears. George Halas' incredible football life is one that should be admired for generations to come. It outlines the career of George Halas from 1895 through 2003. All the NFL Championships that were won are noted in this book. The author candidly tells the mistakes that George Halas made as well as his accomplishments. The book also tells the story of how the current owners, the McCaskey family, has done since the passing of George Halas. The book has an insert of great Chicago Bears pictures. The very reason the Chicago Bears have been a disappointment is also uncovered in this book. The best quote in the book is the following: "Jerry Vainisi, 1986. Hired by George Halas Sr. and Jr. in 1972 as comptroller and in-house counsel. Became vice president, general manager, and treasurer by 1983. Fired after 1986 in a power struggle with team president Michael McCaskey. The Bears have never been the same since his departure."You will not regret your decision to buy this book. Bear Down!

This is not a particularly well written or well organized book. But it is about an icon and provides good detail of the life of George Halas. As any avid professional football fan knows, George Halas is one of the original founders, players, and coaches of the National Football League. A Chicago native, he built and sustained one of the most gloried franchises in NFL history. It is rather a shame this book did tell the story with a little more panache.

What a treat this book is, not only for Bears fans but also for anyone who loves the NFL. There wouldn't be an NFL without the tireless work of George Halas, the Papa Bear. And Davis's book tells you all you need to know about this fascinating character. It is also a trove of information about the early years of the NFL. It is a delight to read, and it belongs in the library of anyone who fancies himself a true follower or professional football.Al BowersPrescott, Arizona

This book is good for the history of the Chicago Bears and the NFL, but it is not very critical. Then again George Halas is beloved by all and beyond reproach at this point in his life.

this book came packaged well and even though used was in great condition. papa bear is a legend! This book is also very thick with and worth the price with lots of reading material.

Great book for any Bears fan.

very interesting book nice for bears fans

this song is fantastic! Camille saint-saens is a great composer. This piece is a challenge even for the accomplished cellist, and is the most fun I've had playing in a long time! Just as well, it arrived in the mail 4 days after I ordered, nearly a week before it was expected. A pleasant surprise indeed. Highly recommend this piece for anyone looking for a fun, beautiful music piece.

I love reading history books, as long as they were not approved by the Texas Board of Education(because then they aren't worth a damn, apparently). However, I understand that not everyone shares my love of historical events. A lot of history books are pretty dry, at best. At worst, they are downright boring. This is not that kind of a book. This is one of the coolest history books I've ever read. I had originally bought it for my nephew, but once I actually started perusing the pages I realized that his mother would have a massive coronary if she saw the language. Even if said language adds to the ambience. The author, Ben Thompson, runs a site called [...]. He searches the history books for badasses. Not all of the badasses are men, nor are they all from the 20th century, which is refreshing. Thompson relates the stories with gusto, like a teenaged/college aged boy would describe a videogame boss fight to his friends--and this generates interest. The stories of these people maintain that interest. The humor seals the deal. There may be a bit of 'embellishment' in relating the stories, but this doesn't detract in the least. And each chapter is only at most five pages long--perfect for a short attention span or when you only have a minute here or there to read. So of course, I read the whole thing in a couple of hours, with a pause here and there. This might be a good book for a person who doesn't read a lot to improve their reading skills with a high interest book. It would be perfect for a reader who has trouble with maintaining attention when reading. In short, this is a perfect book to encourage reading in older teenaged boys. The language is really the only thing I think that a parent might take issue with, but since the profanity is a part of the schtick and not specifically gratuitous, I wouldn't have a problem if my 15 year old decided to read it.

Put simply, this is a book where the author writes about 40 badasses from history, and he does so with colorful language, pop references and plenty of humor. I enjoyed it thoroughly not only because it was entertaining, but also because I learned a lot about various historical figures and events. I found myself doing quite a bit of historical research. The fact that various Sikh badasses showed up in the book was an even bigger bonus. I fully intend to purchase the second book he wrote. This isn't for everyone -- in fact I would guess that he's around my age (born 1972) based on his pop references -- but the best thing about this book is that you can simply check out his website [...]and know whether or not you will like the book, because they're the same writing style. 9/10.

Just a simple note to let you know that how fun this book is. It's not fancy reading, and you won't be a scholar of history when your done, but it reads like a what I imagine an old Navy Vet might talk like or perhaps a real cowboy from Texas telling you the story over a rye-whiskey! It's FUN to read, and since it's my poo-break book when I come home in the evenings, my girl often asks me through the door what is so funny as I am constantly laughing out loud, and I say "What a clever writer, he certainly has a way with descriptions!"Like I said, it's not definitive in a research of history like manner, thought most end of chapters have little bonus "bet you didn't know" snippets which is true, I most often didn't! Still, entertaining and quick reads make for the prefect Christmas present also as I know a guy who would find this book right up his alley!Have Fun!

Ben Thompson's "Badass" isn't just hilarious, it's educational!Never before have I laughed out loud so obnoxiously while learning about the same material I used to fall asleep to during long, drawn out, monotone lectures by professors with less personality than Ben Stein. This is the kind of history book I would've loved back in high school, and it even helped inspire my own humorous history blog. Badass spawned two other volumes: 'The Birth of a Legend' and 'Ultimate Deathmatch' (both of which I also highly recommend). This one highlights many key figures from Ancient Egypt to World War II including but not limited to: Leonidas, Napoleon, and Vlad the Impaler! Now what are you waiting for? Add it to that shopping cart! I'm waiting... any day now...-Erik Slader-(EpikFAILs.com)

By the first part of this book I was growing weary of the repetitive superlatives, but overall an interesting way to present historical figures, many of whom I'd never heard. I'm a big history buff, but prefer to read a bit more on each subject. However, if you've got a young person who doesn't like history, this is a great way to grab their attention and let them know it's not all "boring."

This book (as well as the others by Ben Thompson) are that amazing combination of history, excitement, swearing, and general awesomeness that makes my 6th grader UNABLE to put the book down. Talk about getting a kid to LOVE reading... holy smokes. Our copies of Ben's earlier books are all ratty (and one has lost its cover) because my son has read them so many times. This book arrived TODAY and he's already nearly finished it. This is a page turner and super fun to read. Plus it's packed with real history - the short stories about real battles get my kid interested and then he's off doing more research on the same topics. What a way to encourage reading! There is a bit of swearing in the book (and some rude jokes - mostly involving crushed testicles, etc), but nothing super offensive. I think it's perfect for middle schoolers and up. (And also for adults - my husband and I both love these books!) Ben has done a nice job of having a mixture of people in history, so there are badass females too. I appreciate him giving equal badass opportunities! All in all, this is a super fun book to read. This is the perfect book for "reluctant readers" who may find most books dull. THIS BOOK IS NOT BORING!! :) Our whole family loves it. Lots of excitement, lots of humor, lots of history.

I bought this for my 11 year old grandson who absolutely adores EllenShe came through & did not dissappoint either of us

good book very entertaining

Bought this for a friend in Rehab. They needed to smile.

Good gift for Ellen fan

I saw this book cover on the Kindle Unlimited page with Ellen's name in the cover. I realized later it was published by someone else and felt duped by the cover. I am leaving this review so others can on be sure they intended to get this book since the cover could be misleading.

Ellen has great quotes that can make you laugh and think a little deeper at the same time. That's exactly what this book is.

Her books are great but this is just a collage of sayings without any context and a lot of repeats

Funny funny book. Will have you laughing out loud.
