I enjoyed the tale of moving, of becoming acclimatized, of become a near-local. I also noted that Portuguese bureaucracy seems quite similar to Brazil's. Neither seem conducive to starting and/or running a business in the manner of London or coastal US.

I found this book to be informative and fun. It described many of the pitfalls that result when moving to Portugal and how they overcame them. There seems to be no agenda except to give information. Since it is my plan to move to Portugal, my copy is already dog-earred and highlighted!

Very well written, a fantastic mix of practical advice and personal experience. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the authors' journey as they settled into their new home and found myself wanting to read more and more. A big thank you from Australia for the inspiring read!

Very informative book for those interested in learning the process and pitfalls of moving into Portugal.Funny stories, frustrating experiences, beauracracy, visitors, and many more topics.

we are going next spring [to visit not move Trump maybe who knows]definitely made some have to see notes

Wonderful read, but we wanted to fallow them and they had moved back. Did not detour us from our planned trip. Book was great for info and entertainment.

Very informative. Many topics were addressed that had not occurred to me previously. Also, a very good reference section at the end.

I started out reading the author's blog because my husband and I are considering a move to Portugal in a few years after we retire. When I found out about the book I had to get it, especially since his wife also contributed to the content of the book so it wouldn't just be his blog put down into book format. I have not yet read the entire book, but already have learned so much about Portugal and the challenges involved in moving there. The book is very informative, with plenty of information on the people, customs, travel within the country, etc. I'm sure there will still be much to learn when we get there, but after reading Moving to Portugal, I feel that we at least have a good foundation from which to start.

African American Folk Healing

From Publishers Weekly

Mitchem, who teaches religious studies at the University of South Carolina, explores folk healing as a faith expression in black communities. While she includes some of the remedies used by African-Americans (e.g., to lower your blood pressure, put Spanish moss in your drink), her research goes far beyond collecting cures. Indeed, Mitchem argues that for African-Americans healing practices are part of a larger system of meaning, one that is sometimes in conflict with institutionalized medicine. Black folk healing has persisted in part because a racist society has long denied adequate care to black people—folk healing, Mitchem persuasively argues, allows African-Americans agency in defining their own bodies, exerting some control over life. But even when African-Americans can find equitable medical care, folk practices will persist because they are life-giving and because they holistically address physical, economic and spiritual needs. Mitchem could have offered a more robust analysis of the commodification of folk medicine—she notes that a Detroit Hoodoo 101 class cost $75, but fails to adequately probe the meeting of folk medicine and the marketplace. That omission is a minor flaw in a fascinating study that makes a real contribution to discussions of health, wellness and faith in America. I love African American Folk History, and this book does not disappoint.

Very few authors have done what Mitchem has accomplished, which is write about African American Folk tradition as a spiritual healing practice. Usually when authors write about African American folk practices it is hyped up with all sorts of sensational myths, which causes many to few practitioners of any Afro-Diaspora tradition to be inhuman, cannibalistic devil worshipers.Mitchem explores all of the influences of African American spirituality, which contrary to popular is not just composed of Christianity, but is a gumbo of various influences. Because of her presentation, she gives the reader an inside look as to why African American spirituality is composed of Christian influences as well as influences from the Nation of Islam, Kamitic tradition, Afro-Caribbean traditions, and even intellectual mental sciences, but for whatever reason returns back to incorporate African American rootwork or hoodoo tradition.I really liked this book because it helped me to see that I was not alone in my spiritual quest. And, that there were others that had gone through similar experiences, which they could not logically explain before finding peace in something that was culturally relevant.I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to understanding the spiritual aspects of what Tayannah McQuillar calls African American shamanism (Rootwork).

I loved this book and it will remain on my top 10 list...I will have to find her and invite her todo a seminar...she hit the herb right on the flower, everytime!

African American culture is a rich source that can be tapped to acquire and develop an in depth analysis and understanding of the philosophy that undergirds the thinking of African people in the United States and throughout the Diaspora. In the book African American Folk Healing (AAFH) by Stephanie Mitchem, she attempts to uncover the thinking that gave rise to the traditional medicinal practices that were first used by African Americans during the enslavement era and continues to be practiced in various forms even today by practioneers of African based religions in the United States, such as Voodoo, Hoodoo, Santeria and Yoruba. She argues that most of the traditional medical practices first used by enslaved Africans are still in use today. For instance, Mitchem points out that beginning in the 1960's, many African Americans committed themselves to reconnect to the ideas and beliefs advocated and practiced by their ancestors. In many ways this book is not unlike those that have been written about African traditional religion. The main difference lies in the fact that this information is about a particular aspect of African culture that was established in the Americas by African men and women in the seventieth century who were enslaved by the Europeans. AAFH is a collection of stories gathered by the author that seeks to convey how African Americans retained, however fragmented, specific African cultural retentions that were passed down from their enslaved ancestors from one generation to the next. The author consulted the Slave Narratives of the 1930's, Folk Archives of the 1970's, interviews from healing professionals and active participation, to conduct this important study. These sacred stories that have their origin in traditional West African pharmacology, undergirds the foundation of what the author refers to as an African centered "holistic epistemology." (p.53) This African centered cognitive cultural form, argues the author, has served as a powerful response to the dehumanization that was first experienced by enslaved Africans in the United States. This holistic approach to understanding mind, body and spirit, is what Mitchem describes as "culturally based wisdom," (p.7) and is designed to establish a new discourse in which African Americans are given a voice to respond to the world from a perspective that is representative of their holistic view of the cosmos. This holistic view of the world is quite different from the western binary paradigm that views things in isolation. African cosmology, on the other hand, sees the cosmos and all its inhabitants as inner-connected. In other words, there is no difference between the physical and the spiritual world; all is one. Mitchem refers to this relationship as "black epistemology." This holistic approach to understanding the world views human beings and nature as directly related. "Long before western medicine the fact, African traditional healers stressed that interpersonal relations affected people's health." (p.35) According to Mitchem, this holistic approach to healing is culturally centered and necessary for the survival of African Americans. Since African Americans have historically been either ignored by the main- stream medical community or in some cases experimented upon, it is important that their voices be heard. These misrepresentations of blackness were not simple aberrations but the entire white world participated in the dehumanization of African people as reflected in the following: "Questions of the humanity of black bodies drew from a potent combination of philosophies from Jean Jacques Rousseau to John Locke; were infused with European beliefs buoyed by the growth of nationalism and the practices of capitalism; reinforced by development of theories of evolution; and blessed by the placement of Science and Reason as the new, improved, verifiable gods of modern thinking." (p.42) Mitchem explains her rational for conducting this study into African American folk healing by quoting Zora Neale Hurston. "Whoever controls the images of a people or a culture is crucial to domination and identity of that people or culture. The images of blacks have been largely shaped, controlled, and nourished by beliefs about blackness within the dominant cultures of Europe and America." (p.44) In part, the aim of this book is to establish a new way of thinking about African Americans and the healing practices that continue to be used throughout the black community. Again, Mitchem quotes Elliott Skinner, author of the article "Hegemonic Paradigms of the African World" to lend greater credence to her rationale for the study. "African peoples must eliminate the contradictions of seeing themselves through the eyes of others." (p.41) Only then will "black bodies" escape the fate of being "read" from "white cultural perspectives." To a large extent, Mitchem write this book to tell the story of African Americans from a humanistic perspective. For she is certain that if their story is not properly told from an insider's perspective, then others may continue to write about people of African descent as the exotic other.Because of the historical legacy of slavery and the medical communities involvement in the Eugenics projects and the Tuskegee Experiment, many African Americans have come to distrust American medicine and in the process have relied upon forms of healing that have their main roots grounded in the traditional medicinal practices of West Africa. This books attempts to establish why African Americans have retained such healing traditions like Hoodoo and even at a time when modern medicine seems to offer so much more. First, Mitchem argues that African Americans have remained faithful to many traditional healing practices passed down to them, ignoring mainstream medicines because of the history of western medicine that is indeed tainted by the same sickness of racism that infected most of America from its very inception. Thus, African Americans were forced to develop and reconnect to traditional healing methods and modalities that they understood and could control. Unlike western medicine, Mitchem points out that African traditional medicine is holistic and seeks to address not only the symptoms, but, the primary focus in traditional healing treats illnesses by addressing every aspect of the person. For instance, if one is experiencing a headache, before an herb or other modalities are used to treat the condition other questions must first be explored. For example, the practioneer of African medicine may ask the client what kind of relationship they have with their spouse or other family members. Since traditional medicine is holistic in nature and seeks to address the total being, ones activities must be in harmony with all things in existence including other humans, plants, animals and other entities. Mitchem describes this relationship as "embodied spirituality." (p.85) This embodied spirituality is a kind of awareness or spiritual consciousness that heightens ones insight concerning the unity of the body, soul, and that one's past is connected to the present and future. In other words, reality is not made up of a series of events occurring one after the other but is happening simultaneously. Thus the African concept of time and reality is quite different from what we are taught about time and reality in the West. This vastly different concept of "African" time, even affects the African view of death, which is why the veneration of the ancestors is very important. For death does not mean the end of life but simply is a transition to another sphere of reality where life continues.Mitchem provides the reader with a thorough analysis of the holistic nature of AAFH but errors in one important point. That is, connecting the roots of AAFH with slavery is a grave mistake. Its roots are firmly planted within the soil of Africa. The enslavement era was a horrendous event that brought Africans together from different cultural groups, who upon finding themselves enslaved, were forced to rely upon their primal cosmology to make sense out of a world that seemed to conspire against them. The enslaved Africans in North America and throughout the Americas did borrow healing modalities and ideas from the indigenous and poor whites, which she describes as "culture hybridity." (pp.163, 154, 150, 86, 70) However, the origin of AAFH was created by men and women who were familiar with the various healing practices that were operating throughout West Africa for thousands of years. The hybridization or syncreticism that occurred within AAFH is also not something unique to African cultural forms, but is indeed the hallmark of African traditional religion. Unlike the Abrahamic faiths, African traditional religion is not dogmatic or derived from faith propositions. African traditional religion has always been open to borrowing and incorporating ideas, deities and concepts from other traditions. (Douglas Thomas, African Traditional Religion in the Modern World). Some scholars argue that the adoption of Islam by so many Africans can also be explained as Africans not accepting a new religion, (Newell Booth, Jr., "An Approach to African Religions," in African Religions: A Symposium) but, is part of the barrowing process or what Mitchem refers to as "hybridity" that has always occurred in African traditional societies. African traditional religion has always been organic and open to incorporating new ideas, concepts and even deities. Thus, AAFH is not simply a New World invention with its deepest roots in slavery, but existed in Africa for centuries before the arrival of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Therefore, to directly link African healing and pharmacology to slavery is indeed a serious historical mistake. In part, Mitchem may have recognized this short coming and such a correction may be reflected in the following: "African American folk healing is often narrowly presented as a kind of post-Jim Crow hangover, with the implication that as soon as black people are fully acculturated into American society, they will not longer need such magical thinking." (p.5)AAFH is not simply an invention of enslaved Africans but has indeed exited in African for thousands of years. Therefore, to directly connect African pharmacology to slavery is indeed an error. Yet, to Mitchem's credit, she does recognize that AAFH has roots in Africa, but is also deeply connected to the people and experiences that are unique to America. As Mitchem makes clear: "Folk Healing reflects black cultural changes born of the civil rights, feminist, and Black Power movements. " (p.77) In this regard, AAFH is a true African cultural form, which is eclectic and always ready to change forms without disturbing the substance. Because of its ability to adapt and embrace change, AAFH, like all African cultural forms will indeed survive modernity. The future AAFH is not questionable as Mitchem seems to imply in her conclusion, but is certain to strive by incorporating new healing modalities and methods such as Reki and other New Age healing practices; thereby attracting to itself all that is good in the world and making them a part of this rich African cultural tradition.Douglas E. You know when you are talking to yourself in your head and no one else is listening but you keep talking anyway? Well, that is the vibe I got when I read most of these short stories and I loved it!I normally don’t gravitate towards short stories, but something about the cover made me look into this book. After I read the first two chapters I knew I liked them, but since it wasn’t an ongoing story I felt something was holding me back. But, as I started whipping through each story within 20 – 40 minutes, I realized I craved the next. I kept asking: where is author, Curtis Sittenfeld, going to go to next?To me, the overall theme was that each character was in their own head. They were concerned with what they thought outside perceptions would expect (or sometimes outcomes they were hoping for) that they completely misread situations. Some would come to realize that, some would not.The writing was authentic and relatable. Although the stories were short they packed the necessary punch to keep you engaged. After I finished each story I would think of each character “where are they now?” The cool thing about this book is that I can create the answer to that question in my own head; since aren’t we all in our own heads…see what I did there?! Is it still funny if I must point it out? Don’t answer that. This is the first Curtis Sittenfeld book I have read and certainly not the last.

Curtis Sittenfield is a delightful satirist and assured storyteller as well as an underrated political writer. "You Think It" isn't billed as a "Trump book," nor is it, but so many of these stories show the conundrums---social, sexual, professional---of this singular political moment. I could imagine reading this again ten years from now and thinking, "Yes, that's what it was like!"In all of her books, Curtis Sittenfield does such a superb job of capturing the awkward and occasionally exhilarating dance of gender relations, and there's much of the same here, though the subject is often marriage or post-marriage. As a now-married read and longtime fan, it's been a delight to "grow up" with Curtis. I'm roughly the same age as her and read "Prep" when I was just distant enough from high school to be able to laugh at it while also remember it well. I feel lucky to have Curtis Sittenfield bringing the same gimlet-eye to early middle age, its vanities and resentments and small victories. If satire can also be cozy and comforting, this is it.

Perfectly-cut gems—they refract the light of truth, and sparkle with life. Curtis Sittenfeld definitely knows a certain swath of humanity intimately (the whiter-than-white portion), and reveals it so well I marveled and cringed simultaneously. I'd read and enjoyed "Prep", but not enough to want to read everything Sittenfeld wrote (whereas Amor Towles or Charles Bukowski or Louise Fitzhugh or Raymond Carver etc, I became obsessed with). Her style and eye work perfectly in short form.

I'm a huge CS fan, and this didn't disappoint! I had read some of these stories before (in the New Yorker), but I read again because they're that good. I don't know how she gets into the nitty gritty of life and thoughts and conversations the way she does. She's so graceful about it, but it isn't pretentious. The only hard part was rationing the stories out b/c I didn't want to finish too quickly. If you're a CS fan, absolutely read this. It's vintage her.

I usually don't read many short stories. With this being a pick for one of my Goodreads groups a while back,I decided to give this collection a chance. I have taken quite a while to finish, but it was easy to just read one story at a time then go back to books with more pressing deadlines. Each story was a gem. None turned out as I expected. I feel short stories are harder to write as so much has to be captured in less.

This book is incredible. I have been a fan of Sittenfeld since I read Prep (50 times) and then I went back and read Man of My Dreams and have since pre-ordered every book she's every written. Some of her books have disappointed me (Sisterland and Eligible) but this one was right up there with American Wife and Prep. Every single story ended too soon, I wanted more. I found things I loved and hated (but yet related to) about every character. Every short story was a page turner. I devoured this book. I highly recommend it.

Some of the stories were entertaining but all in all I didn’t care for this book. I am not a Hillary supporter and I don’t see humor in our President. Most of these stories read as though the author is suffering from resentment from early adulthood. Each story has some kind of getting even. It became boring and old. Sorry I spent the money on it.

This book is not good, the author tries to include a lot of imagery that ends up feeling like nonsense details that don’t add any real flavor to the stories. It’s also a choppy read; not a difficult one, but it’s hard to stay focused. Aside from that, the actual substance of the stories told just weren’t my cup of tea. Sometimes I can overlook sloppy writing if the story is interesting, was not the case for me

A Meal with Jesus: Discovering Grace, Community, and Mission around the Table, by Tim Chester

Review

“We all know fasting can be a spiritual exercise, but eating is really more like Jesus. In this book, Chester points out that Christianity was meant to be conducted at a table with the intimacy of a shared meal. Church was never meant to be holy services held in sacred buildings conducted by saintly men in long robes passing thin wafers and a thimble of juice―removed from real life. Chester rightly puts us back where we belong...at the table in front of a meal―a feast actually. This is an outstanding treatise on an important subject that was long ago lost in the mire of sacred rituals. It is time we come back to the table and enjoy the life given to us.”―Neil Cole, Founder and Director, Church Multiplication Associates; author, Organic Church"I'm not sure I could name all the titles of the books Tim has now written. I've even written one or two with him. But this is the best so far, by far! It fed my soul and through it I enjoyed grace in a new way. In fact, the book is a sumptuous meal in its own right. Buy it, not just to read it, but to feast on it."―Steve Timmis, Executive Director, Acts 29 Church Planting Network“I have always told the congregations I've served that if you take the mountains and meals out of the Bible, it's a very short book. In a world of competing church models and strategies, Tim shows us that Jesus employed one practice over all others: Sharing a meal with people. This book serves as a poignant reminder that grace, mission, and community are never enacted best through programs and propaganda, but rather through the equality and acceptance experienced at the common table. May our lives never be too busy to live this out.”―Mike Breen, Global Leader, 3DM; author, Building a Discipleship Culture“Tim Chester has a keen ability to reflect on gospel, community, and mission, making them accessible to the common person through the mess and movement of everyday life. Tim certainly accomplished this again in A Meal with Jesus. With each meal, my convictions about how the gospel informs all of life and relationships went deeper, and my affections for Jesus grew stronger. I want everyone in my church to read this book.”―Jeff Vanderstelt, Visionary Leader, Soma; Pastor, Doxa Church, Bellevue, Washington; author, Saturate

People will often say that Gandhi and Jesus had a lot in common. While I'm sure some similarities exist, I think such a view betrays a superficial understanding of both men. Take one example: their diverging attitudes about food. Gandhi appeared to have a rather strained and fickle relationship with food. He held the view that one's taste for food was inextricably linked with one's sexual appetite - and both were inherently vulgar, debased, impure - desires to be squelched. In his mind, the disciplined man lives in a state of perpetual "partial fasting," relying only on scant portions in his "grim fight against the inherited and acquired habit of eating for pleasure" (Gandhi quoted in Joseph Lelyveld's book Great Soul)."The Son of Man," rather, "came eating and drinking..." (Luke 7:34). This astonishing truth about Christ, along with the Bible's repeated use of food and feast related imagery, is the subject of Tim Chester's fantastic book, A Meal with Jesus: Discovering Grace, Community & Mission around the Table. Chester's main burdens in this book are as follows: to explain the startling significance of Christ's desire to eat with sinners and Pharisees alike; to reveal the deeper spiritual realities that these shared meals with Christ point to; and to encourage us as Christians to make the sharing of meals an integral part of our fellowship with others, so as to regularly enact and reflect upon the grace that Christ so freely gave to us.This is a neat book because it addresses some of the concerns commonly raised by the emergent church - our lack of connectedness, our desire for authentic community, the need for social justice and equality, the call for the church to reflect people from every tribe, tongue and nation. And yet, it does all this in a completely gospel-centered way, a way that does not depart from historic Protestantism. This is a book about food and fellowship, yes, but, ultimately, this book is unabashedly about the gospel. It's about substitutionary atonement. So, how does Chester connect the topics of food and fellowship with the cross?Chester demonstrates that hospitality is a recurring theme in God's story. From the forbidden fruit of Genesis to the banquet imagery of Revelation, food and feasting - or lack thereof - is symbolic of our standing before a holy God. In the Old Testament, when Israel enjoyed peace with God, food was abundant. And, conversely, in times of judgment, the reality was famine. But, though we deserve the famine, God demonstrates his faithful love to undeserving people through abundant feasting, made possible only by the free distribution of his grace. Chester cites a rich and beautiful passage in Isaiah that embodies this gospel reality:"On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined..."But, how can that be, when our sin separates us from God? Here's the best part!"...And [the Lord] will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth..." (Isa. 25: 6-8)Chester explains: "No one need ever leave this feast. In Isaiah 25 death itself is on the menu - God himself will swallow it up. So this is a perpetual feast" (59).How beautiful and coherent the Bible is, that we see substitutionary atonement in the Old Testament, God taking the sin of his people onto himself, so that they can be reconciled to him. We eat good food; God eats death. And all of this points to the cross. Throughout his book, Chester just relishes this fact.It should, then, come as no surprise to us that Jesus is the host of and a participant in many shared meals, as he prepares a way for us to have fellowship with God. "Jesus is the Passover lamb. His blood is daubed over our lives; the Lord passes over us, and we're redeemed...so we can come to the mountain of God, and eat and drink with God" (113).Chester, then, charges us to live in light of this gospel reality, inviting others, particularly those we are in the habit of rejecting, to join us around the table. I loved this book. I've been resisting this cheesy cliché, but, what the heck; it truly was "food for the soul."So, while I appreciate Gandhi's aversion to gluttony and his desire to see hungry people fed, I have to disagree with his assertion that a full meal is "a crime against God and man." For people who put their faith in Christ, a full meal - especially one shared with others - is symbolic of our reconciled relationship with God through Christ, and a pointer to the feast to come.

3 meals a day, 7 days is a week, is 21 meals a week, 84 meals a month, and 1092 meals a year. The point is not the actual number. The point is we spend a lot of time eating. That's why this book matters.A Meal with Jesus affirms something we do so often that is essential to our existence on planet Earth, shows how it's integral to God's design, and gives us unconventional paradigms that change the way we live life and do ministry.Honestly, the sections about hospitality as mission make the book worth buying, reading, and keeping on your shelf to refer back to. Because Chester covers things like how meals help us move from theoretical community to real community, how meals bring mission into the ordinary, and how if you routinely share meals with people and you have a passion for Jesus you'll be doing mission. You probably haven't heard this stuff anywhere else -- on a topic that matters so much to our daily lives.A Meal with Jesus is definitely worth reading.

Tim Chester did a great job walking through the Gospel or Luke to show the impact of being together with others around a table sharing a meal. He eluded to the fact that as we gather around a table and share a meal, the very act itself of sharing a meal points to the eternal banquet to come with Jesus at the Messianic banquet.. what a great connection and reminder for us all. Bravo Tim, this was a great read

This book looks deeply into Jesus' ministry and has a lot of powerful things to say about sharing meals with believers and unbelievers alike. If we are truly to be living like He did, we should be reaching the marginalized in our society - not distancing ourselves from the broken. Jesus was a friend to sinners for a reason; today it often seems like Christ-followers cluster around other Christ-followers instead of being mission-minded in everyday life. Great book!

Did a sermon series from Luke on evangelism. Great resource!!

Point: The significance of daily meals has been forgotten. A meal is much more than refueling, rather it is means by which we may worship and share Christ.Path: Chester works through six passages in the book of Luke explaining how Christ used meals to enact grace, community, hope, mission, salvation, and promise. These passages are wrapped together with seasoned personal stories, tasty facts, and bold encouragement to use meals for God's glory.Sources: Chester quotes from religious sources such as Tim Keller, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Robert Karris. He also references current statistics from a variety of works.Agreement: Chester challenges the reader to take a second look at Christ's ministry. A majority of his teaching, discipleship and evangelization took place around food. If only we would take one of our 21 meals a week and dedicate it to God's glory through His grace!Disagreement: Chester's contemporary parallels of the events in Luke were off at times. I also had a difficult time following his train of thought through the Lord's table as he seems to combine the Table with the Love Feast (although they were generally done at the same time, they each had a different focus).Personal App: Because we like food and love people, my wife and I have sought to bring them together. Chester gave me new ideas and a deeper conviction to do so in a more purposeful and regular fashion.Update: we have put several of his ideas into practice and have benefited greatly from them. You might also want to look into "Art of Neighboring".

My entire understanding of food, and why we eat it, has changed. I used to think of food as just fuel. But it is so much more. Now is the time to enjoy it in preparation for an amazing feast. Even more, now is the time to invite the lost to come to the feast.

I was so frustrated with my pharmacology textbook, that I decided to search for my own, and this is THE one for me. In fact, it is so worth it to me, that I purchased the Kindle version as a resource 10 years after nursing school.

This was the only "new" book I purchased for school and the binding was terrible! there are 4 chapters that were inserted too low in the binding process, so I have serrated edging on the top of the short page and material that is important cut off at the bottom of the pages! I needed this book for school, so I didn't return it. It is such poor quality, I won't be able to resell it for sure!Too bad! I am happy with other products from evolve and their website is very helpful and user friendly, but this purchase was disappointing!... Next time, I'll go for used.

No answer key

Great resource book for nursing students. Useful reference for making comprehensive lecture notes for nursing students.

The study guide had multiple choice type questions and where to find the answers in the text in parentheses but absolutely no answer sheet is to see if your choices you pick was right or wrong. Plus I barely used the study guide I really didn’t have time to focus on the text and the study guide. I don’t recommend purchasing the study guide. If the answers were in the back of the book then yes but it’s not so no🤷🏽‍♂️

No answers in the workbook

This book is like pulling teeth, but what can you do.

Review

“A fascinating, insightful look at race, politics, and sport.”—Booklist“A well-researched meditation on the historical pressures on African-American athletes to embrace (or avoid) political engagement. . . An appealing blend of sports history and provocative discussion of race and success, respect, and representation in America.”—Kirkus Reviews“In this timely book, Bryant, senior writer for ESPN Magazine, astutely explains how sports serves ‘as a barometer of blacks’ standing in the larger culture.’ . . . . This indispensable book expertly chronicles a fractured nation dealing with black players who no longer want to (as Fox News host Laura Ingraham told LeBron James) ‘shut up and dribble.’”—Publishers Weekly“A fascinating and complex look at the role of black athletes as political activists. Bryant’s analysis of the intersection of professional sports and promoting patriotism (or nationalism, depending on one’s point of view) is especially enlightening.”—Library Journal“Bryant keeps his eye on the ball. On top of that, Bryant writes with the kind of vim, in turns darkly comic and serious, that pulls you from page to page. It’s a bracing analysis that brings clarity during a hazy season.”—Pacific Standard“Bryant’s The Heritage is required reading for young people to realize what they’re seeing isn’t new, for current adults to understand the current climate in American sports and for older folks who lamented the lack of activist voices in the athletic ranks. The baton has been tossed.”—New York Amsterdam News“This book will surprise, enlighten, and provide readers food for thought. Heritage lingers in the consciousness—readers will find themselves revisiting its pages long after completing it.”—Los Angeles Review of Books“It may make people uncomfortable, but I’m pleased that Howard Bryant has chosen to tell the story of our heritage, and even more pleased that there are still ballplayers today who are willing to stand up for what they think is right.”—Henry Aaron, Major League Baseball Hall of Famer“Serious times call for serious action. After leaving a communist totalitarian country when I was eighteen, I was free to speak out, and I did. The Heritage gives the clearest breakdown I’ve read on why we athletes not only have the right to advocate for what we believe in—but oftentimes a duty.”—Martina Navratilova, eighteen-time tennis Grand Slam winner“If you believe that sports can be a lens for interpreting and understanding our world, then The Heritage is the Rosetta stone. Howard Bryant’s latest explains so much about racism and the black athlete’s place in US history that every chapter could be its own college course. But Bryant’s book is less history than twenty-first-century prophetic fire: a polemic homing in on the ways that militarism, sports, and black athletic resistance have become volcanically explosive in the era of Trump. This is the book for explaining our times, whether you give a damn about sports or not.”—Dave Zirin, sports editor, The Nation, and author of Jim Brown: Last Man Standing

I heard an interview on NPR from the author about this book and was immediately intrigued and ordered the book that day. This might be in my top 10 books I've read in a long time. Having grown up in the Michal Jordan/Tiger Woods generation this book taught me an immense amount of history and helped me understand our currently climate to a greater degree. This book spurred conversations I don't think I would have been able to articulate prior to reading it. I can't recommend this book enough!

I learned a lot about many events I've lived through and Mr.Bryant was successful in getting me to see the bigger picture and many of the behind the scenes social issues. It was depressing to learn how little progress we've made as a society and encouraging to realize that there are movements afoot.

This is about the finest book I have read in many years! The content is enlightening, the structure very good tying the protest of Black athletes to the increasing domination of profit seeking companies, and the developments after 9/11 and the effect on pro-sports games. It is much more than a book about protest. I strongly recommend it.

This is a great work that is, in essence, a scholarly piece of writing. The history is solid and informative and leads the reader to ask questions about modern and past athletes and their values.

This was a difficult book to read all the way through for me because the subject of racism in the United States is so hurtful. But Bryant did a masterful job of looking behind the sports headlines we are all familiar with and showing their relevance to one of the thorniest issues of our history and present situation. Well done, thanks Howard.

Excellent work by Howard Bryant and one of the best books I've read in quite a long time.

I would Bryant does a great job of explaining why we should never "stick to sports. I recommend this to everyone.

Loved this book.

I met Danie back at Advanced Mastery Training 2010 that was my first exposure to her. She's not really an NLP person but I will say that she is one of the most exquisite people at anchoring that I have ever seen. For those of you are familiar with the process of anchoring think of everything that she teaches in this book as anchoring with props. It's very useful.I would recommend this book as a reference to anyone that would like to increase their... Impact and ability to Anchor when working with clients.

If you are tired of your clients or patients walking out of your office with the same hopless look they walked in with, use the techniques in this book to stir their mind in a way that will make a lasting impact.

I love these techniques! I have been using two of them almost every day! Most of us learn and remember best with a concrete example - or a metaphor. A very useful addition to the library of any therapist.
