And leave glowing reviews.Bell delivers what he promises, and delves into several kinds of story endings, not just "happily ever afters," but twist endings and tragic endings, and more.And, in my opinion, there's a major bonus in "The Last Fifty Pages...." It's the OTHER bits Bell includes - overviews of some of his other books (like "Super Structure" and "Write Your Novel from the Middle"). Those tips can radically improve your current book, too.I've been writing fiction for more years than I'd like to admit. And, I have far too many unfinished books on my hard drive, because they lost their spark, even with the best, most meticulous plotting I could muster. This is my first JSB book and it likely won't be my lasts. I've been hung up on my memoir's ending for months now, scribbling and erasing and retyping only to never be fully satisfied with where and how things end. I love that this kindle book focuses on this exact subject. I appreciate that the author didn't fatten his page count with page after page of other author's examples (as I so often see in the kindle bookstore). JSB offered down to earth and easy to follow content on what to do and not do when ending your book. It is more suited toward fiction writers, but even non-fiction/memoir folks like myself can find use in it.Two thumbs up. Now, someone stop me before I wipe the dust off my Amazon credit card and buy the rest of Bell's ebooks on writing tips.

The author has a very engaging teaching style and a wicked sense of humor. I loved how he used examples of novel endings to support his advice. It really made this book a joy to read. Whether you're writing your first book or your fiftieth, The Last Fifty Pages will change how you look at endings, setting ablaze a fire that propels your writing to the next level (and there's always a next level), forcing you to push harder to create the most memorable ending you've ever written. I've read a lot of books by James Scott Bell, I believe he is the best at sharing information to make writers the best authors possible. There were two places in the book that made it well worth the minor cost of the book and allowed me to gleam insights to make my current work in progress better.I think the book started slow and un-focused, but if you get past chapter three you will find nuggets of gold. He does use a lot of the same stories and insights from previous books he's written, but did a good job taking the same stories and digging deeper into the ending. What makes an ending stronger, when to show a protagonist's victory or defeat.I've had a couple of readers of my first book tell me it had a weak ending, so I'm looking forward to utilizing the concepts James included in his book to make my next novel even better than the first.

I always learn so much with each James Scott Bell book I read. There are so many writing instructors out there, but Bell seems to speak the language that makes sense to me and I always walk away from his books with practical and applicable techniques for my next project to make my writing better and more sellable. I highly recommend this book, as well as Super Structure and Writing Your Novel From the Middle. All fantastic books.

His teaching style is straightforward, and his advice practical and easy to implement.In this book, JSB suggests knowing the shape of the ending and working toward it, while writing the other scenes. He identifies five ending shapes: lead wins, lead loses, lead sacrifices, lead “wins” but really loses, and open-ended. He addresses common ending problems, brainstorming endings, and making endings meaningful and resonant.While JSB covers some of the same ground from his other books (e.g. his LOCK system and plotting from the middle), there’s plenty of good advice for creating robust endings.

This book really helped me think through some possibilities for writing a dynamic ending to my next novel. I especially like the idea of aiming for a target ending but also having the freedom to change that ending when I get there. I enjoy reading JSB’s craft books. I learn a lot from them, and they don’t put me to sleep.

This book has useful tips on how to end a book with a bang, but it is also very, very funny. Funny and useful. What more could you want?

Once again Thomas Pavitte, the artist, has created a masterpiece work of art. I enjoy completing the art but there is frustration because of the light color of some of the dots making them difficult to see without significant magnification. I would strongly suggest darker hues for the dot colors. It would be a real shame if a purchaser were not able to see the dots clearly, and fail to complete a real masterpiece. Mr. Pavitte has mastered a technique of over printing that give a three dimensional effect to his work which I applaud. I am anxious to see what his next book will contain but I hope that darker colors will be used by his printer for the dots. I have shown some of the completed designs to friends who cannot believe the pictures are dot to dot designs. Please keep up this wonderful series but darken the dots.

Love this book! Very engrossing (to the point of having a backache from working on it.) Initially I didn't think I would like doing a project that I felt was more child oriented, but just like adult coloring books, this changed my mind, so much so that I'm looking at other dot-to-dot books by the same author. Granted, yes, the numbers are small and one must pay attention to which number is next -- I'm guilty of connecting the wrong numbers more than once -- but the pictures are amazing and they're just fun to do.

I love Thomas Pavitte's work. His attention to detail and imagination are incredible. I am doing one of his Querkles right now, which are just as much fun as his dot-to-dots. His Wonders of the World show so much labor intensiveness, it boggles the mind. His drawings seem to bring out more drama than the actual article. This man is magic.

Pavitte is the master at dot to dot for adults. His designs are one continous work. He makes the numbers change color every 100 dots if you need to break. You don't have to stop and look for the next number like most of the other books out there. I am totally addicted to his and can't wait for more to come out. Challenging and so therapeutic for relaxation in my opinion. Love these!!

I have excellent eye sight however, I would recommend having a magnifying glass along with a good light source to complete each page in a timely fashion. What was received upon the first completed page was a beautiful piece. Extremely relaxing & therapeutic in stress reduction. Unsure if they had to actually construct the book at the time of the order; it was slow to be delivered. Five weeks was a bit long to receive for that which was said to be in stock.

I bought one of these books last year and hadn’t taken the time to do even one but I had all my children visit in July and the dot-to-dots were the biggest hit. I ended up buying 4 books!

too lazy to return this but now i remember getting it before and returning it. The print is SO SMALL and I mean TINY, even with my most powerful lamp I cannot do these puzzles without magnifying glass and getting a headache.

I was looking forward to this book until I got it and realized the numbers are way smaller than I thought they would be. The only one I will actually finish is the bonus poster included in the book that covers two pages and in which the numbers are much clearer, the rest of the book should have been done like the poster spread across two pages.

I bought this book used for a couple of bucks and found it to be well worth the small investment. The descriptions are good, the illustrations are okay. If you fish this is a good go-to source for fish identification and information. As a fisherman you can live without it, but this book will allow you to grow somewhat.

This book has been a constant companion on nearly all of my fishing trips, regardless of location. I am currently on my second copy- the first was worn out from repeated use ! When a question arises about habitat,water preference, etc., we whip out the ole' McClanes to settle the argument.The pictures offer a true rendition of the fish which aides in rapid identification.The descriptions give vital information, while remaining brief enough to allow the book to function as a true "field" guide.I highly recommend this book to any angler or saltwater fish enthusiasts in need of a pocket guide.

I got this book expecting an encyclopedia of information on each species and was a bit disappointed to find that there was great information on every species covered, the major gamefish species were not focused on in extensive detail. That's no fault of the book and it is exactly as described-a fantastic field guide to all of the salt water fishes and I plan on taking it with me in the future when I fish to put names of the whatchamacallits!So overall, I'd say it's a great buy for interested marine enthusiasts or beginning anglers, but for more experienced anglers-maybe look elsewhere for information on how to catch fish (maybe try Vic Dunaway's material)

This is a decent guide for quick information, but I would not recommend it to those who are looking for a comprehensive guide. It is missing quite a few species, and has outdated information related to certain fishes.

One more about the happy fisherman of the house - he likes this book too, now he hopes he and his buddies will be able to better identify what they're catching.

I had never read about the Lewis and Clark expedition other than learning about it casually during school. This book opened my eyes up to how the world was in the late 18th century and early 19th century, and I was shocked by the amount of precision Ambrose put into the book, as is usual with him. Everything from the preparation of the expedition to the return trip was very precise and in a whole very interesting. Ambrose wrote it to be read almost like a novel, a great adventure by a group of a mere 30 people into the great unknown, where the president even thought that woolly mammoths and other great creatures might still reside. Ambrose gives a great look at all of the Indian tribes and their lifestyles that were encountered on the trip, and a vivid description of the wildlife and surrounding geography. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is even casually interested in American history to someone who is very interested in history as I am.

I read the book years ago and have to say it is one of my all time favorite books. Before a long road trip I decided to buy the 22 hour CD version so that I could "read" the book again and others with me could have the pleasure of hearing the fantastic history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.This long book could not have been easy to read, but Barrett Whitener does a super job. Honestly, I prefer reading paper books to listening to books or reading on a Kindle, but Mr. Whitener makes me forget that I'm listening instead of reading.This is an unabridged set which includes much early history of Meriwether Lewis and his history after the Expedition was over.

Spectacular is the first and last word that comes to mind in thinking about this gloriously told story. While the opening pages come near to bogging down in seemingly endless detail about Lewis and Clark's preparation for their monumental voyage and the various supplies they laid in, the trip itself is described in breathtakingly brilliant, gripping prose. No wonder history courses seldom receive high marks-- teachers are ill equipped to share the adrenaline soaring adventures of our many real life American heroes. Lewis and Clark were U.S. Army commanders of the highest caliber. They focused on their men and their nearly impossible mission in equal measure. Their bravery and intelligence under often horrific conditions-- cold, wet, blizzards, not enough to eat, sometimes hostile Indians, and on and on-- ultimately carried the day and lit one more candle or torch for their famous, one of a kind leader and mentor, President Jefferson and our still new nation.Lewis's unraveling and acute illness when he assumed a political post after the expedition was over is heart breaking. He became terribly ill, ultimately committing suicide while still in his 30's, and there didn't seem to be anyone available to help him. Or, of course, the sort of medications routinely available to modern day physicians. Despite his ignominious and terrible slide toward death by his own hand, Meriwether Lewis stands with his great friend William Clark as one of the best men our armed forces ever saw.

I thought I had some modicum of understanding of the famous trek west by these two historic icons until I read " Undaunted Courage ". Stephen Ambrose almost makes the reader feel like she/he is there while all the decisions are being made and our Congress of the day debates funding the trip as well as approving the funds for the Louisiana Purchase which they thought would be a bust. Congress? some things don't change.. Beyond that, the summary of the trip preparation and the actual trip itself is fascinating. How so few men could achieve what they did, when they did it in an unknown land filled with dangerous marauding natives may be one of the single greatest American achievements ever. Kudos to Stephen Ambrose and kudos to Thomas Jefferson for insisting the Lewis and Clark sojourn take place. This is a great read for anyone interested in substantive American history and the American spirit to accept and overcome formidable challenges..

Having met Stephen Ambrose when he was staying at the Horse Prairie Ranch (the possible location of where Louis met his first Shoshone while trying to obtain horses) I can personally testify to Ambrose's dedication to make Undaunted Courage as historically accurate and vividly described as possible.Like all other historical books written by Stephen Ambrose, Undaunted Courage was meticulously researched and is well written. It stands out among the many works written about the now famous Louis and Clark Expedition and is considered by many authorities to be the most accurate account.Those who read for enjoyment will find this book entertaining and easy to read, while those doing research will find it an invaluable source of information.

My 10 year old says, "Epic Epic Epic!" When pressed on why he thought it was epic, he said, "It has really good stories and humor. The old stories were shaken up a bit, and made funny."I agree with him - this is a good way for kids to get the old Greek legends - Hercules, Perseus, Jason and the Argonauts - in a form that entertains young boys. The narrator is sly and sarcastic, and points out the icky parts of the legends well.

My daughter loves the Percy Jackson series and was very excited to receive this book to learn more about Greek mythology. Unfortunately, the book is constructed with a cheap glue spine binding. The pages started falling out almost immediately upon reading. Based on the content alone, I'd give this a 5, but since I've had to spend time and tape holding it together it only gets a 3.

Do you like comedy? Action? Sarcasm? Greek mythology? Then this totally the book for you! If you have read the whole Percy Jackson series, or the Greek Gods, I believe you will enjoy this book as well. Percy Jackson is a great story teller (wink wink;)). I really liked this book and I hope you do too:)))))

Very entertaining versions of the greek myths, as told from Percy Jackson's point of view. As a consequence, some of the deeper meanings behind the myths are lost, but it got my 8 year old daughter interested in greek mythology. The biggest problem is that now she won't read the actual myths because she only wants to read Percy Jackson's version. We are working on that.Just as a warning, if you haven't read the Percy Jackson series, there are some spoilers in the book as to the outcome of certain events that happen in the series. If you intend to read the series, you definitely don't want to start here.

Told in "Percy's" amusing fashion. He somehow once again manages to include details - l mean details of the actual myths, not snarky remarks or references to 21st century stuff - left out of most tellings of the myths. About how such stupid things are done by the heroes, or how many felonies they commit. (Actually many felonious and stupid doings are included in the usual collections, it's just that most collectors don't point out how evil and stupid they are.) Who do they think they are? Greek gods or something? Reading these proves that Socrates the philosopher of old Athens was right to point out that they are terrible role models for the youth. And why Euripides the play writer had such an easy time writing his tragedies about them.

I have both of Riordan's mythology anthologies. I'm a middle school Reading Resource teacher but also a fan of youth fantasy for my own reading. I like that Riordan did the research to be accurate in his presentation of the ancient myths while inserting Percy Jackson's snarky "voice". References to cell phones and other modern technology bring humor. The narrator also lets us know when the primary documents disagree and weighs in with his [Percy's] opinion about which is most accurate. I've never seen a more usable anthology for use with students for teaching or for enjoyment. I bought both volumes for my grandson this Christmas

Awesome!! My 12yo son is going to love it! I, being a good mom, read it first and laughed many times over at the skillful narration. Now, I just have to remember to hide it so my son doesn't see it before his birthday and not leave it by my reading chair. The stories are well written & very funny (I'm a sucker for dry sarcasm), and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend this and the other book in this 2-part series, "Greek Gods."

It took me awhile to read this because I thought it would just be a glossary. Don't even remember how I got it. Little did u know it would actually be narrated by Percy with all of his smart alec commentary and references to adventures! I just wish I'd known it mattered and read Gods first so I could get those references, but I doubt I missed too too much. It's not like anything was new information since I obsess over Greek myths and would have been deeply disappointed in myself if I didn't know the best of the best, but it was awesome hearing about them from the alternate perspective of a demigod. Just wish I didn't know what happened to [name redacted to avoid spoiling huge plot point of future books] since every reference made me nearly cry. But like Percy has emphasized since the very first book... Happy endings are rarer beyond rare for heroes.
