I ordered this book on the hunt for a great climbing oriented coffee table book. I will say it's a beautifully bound and produced book and from that perspective is probably worth the price, however it missed the mark in a few ways for my personal preference.The major issue for me was that the book is incredibly text heavy. Now, there's a TON of interesting and I'm sure in many ways useful information in here, but I don't understand why a big coffee table book seemed like the solution to printing this.There are very few images comparatively, which I personally was hoping for more of, and the ones that are printed are small. Even the climbing routes and notes were printed small. I think I prefer more visually appealing coffee table books and though I appreciate having insightful information as well, the balance just felt off here to me. This was more the kind of book that might have been fun to flip through to get me excited on a plane or train ride where I was going to be climbing at my destination.Though I love climbing and I found what copy I read interesting, it also wasn't really well written enough to be particularly engaging. I think this could appeal more to someone who has been on those routes or experienced similar life events.Anyway -- not a bad book, just to me not well executed in terms of being the right style of book for what it accomplishes. It's neither appropriate for a coffee table or your pocket, and though it seems silly even now to me to be rating a book based on its physical production in relation to its content instead of its content alone, it really affected my ability to appreciate it.

We are fortunate that Fred managed to get in the last must-climbs on his list. At 89 it wasn't clear that he'd manage that, but he apparently has. Kudos to all the rope guns that have helped him along the way these past few years.The book is everything you'd expect. The selection of climbs is decidedly not snobbish. It's based on the appeal of the climbs, not technical challenges or bragging rights. It's got routes with 5.11 pitches, and it's got 5.fun routes like the Third Flatiron in Colorado's Front Range.The route descriptions are terse but suffice to give one a good sense of the climb, and the featured rock routes have hand drawn topos. Each climb also has a brief list of caveats that highlight hazards or key route finding beta.Each description includes a personal memoir of Beckey's climbs on the route along with notes on the history and geology of the area. For the most part these are interesting. There are some nice sized photos of the routes themselves as well as some smaller accent pictures of Fred and friends in action.Probably the best use for this book is to motivate the climber bound to her or his home turf to seek out and plan trips to different places and different rocks. There's certainly enough material here to base that sort of planning on.This book makes a nice companion to Patagonia's classic books on Yosemite in the 60s and 70s. Mr Chouinard is building a nice library of must have large format climbing tomes.The climbs breakdown like this: Pacific NW - 16 featured climbs and 2 additional short descriptions, Alaska - 4 featured, BC Coast Range - 7 featured and 6 short, Canadian Rockies - 18 featured and 7 short, Wind River, Tetons and Wasatch Ranges: 1 featured and 4 short, CO Front Range: 8 featured and 3 short, Sierra Nevada South: 7 featured and 3 short, Sierra Nevada North: 10 featured and 8 short, Southwest: 13 featured and 6 short, Appalachians and Mexico: 4 featured.

Loved the book, more detail and knowledge of both the mountain and the soul on those who undertake the awesome challenges of " topping"

This book is very much in the spirit of Steck & Roper's 50 Classic Climbs - a blend of climbing history, geography, photography, route descriptions and practical advice. (About a dozen of the same routes appear in both books.) The big difference, of course, is that Fred Beckey has done all of these climbs himself. It's clearly not intended as an actual guidebook - it's a big, heavy hardcover; most of the descriptions are quite terse; and many routes lack topos - but there's more than enough information here to whet the appetite of climbing enthusiasts, and for many of us there's inspiration for several lifetimes of adventures (few people can hope to emulate Fred Beckey and climb all these routes in a single lifetime). In terms of technical difficulty, almost all of these routes are accessible to average climbers (very few of them are harder than 5.10), but technical difficulty is not the only challenge, since many of them are on big, remote mountains. However, roadside crags like Boulder's Third Flatiron and Eldorado Canyon make their appearance as well. One disappointment is that there aren't as many photos as one could hope for, and many of them are very small, which is surprising for a large coffee-table book.

Fred Beckey. One of the foremost great pioneers of American mountain climbing. I enjoy the stories and the history that go with the desriptions of the climbs. He makes you feel like you're there.

This book was a christmas gift for my son who is an avid climber; he requested it.. When if arrived I was impressed with its attractiveness, easily a "coffee table" variety.He was very pleased to receive it and I know will enjoy "dreaming" his way through it.

A classic! Great narrative, first class and important routes and wonderful photos. A must for a climbers library.

Beautiful book, unfortunately I've given in to the idea that I won't have the time to finish all these peaks. I better start climbing at a younger age in my next life.

I bought this for my first graders as part of our job unit. As far as the text goes, it is perfect. There is rich vocabulary, but it isn't so wordy that little ones stop listening.However, every single cop in the book is white. There is one black cop on the cover, and after that, it is all white people. I want my black kids to see themselves in books. This one misses the mark.

This book is intended for younger children. I read it with my kinders, and it was long enough to learn from but not to long that the lost interest. Though is talks a little about the day to day of being a police officer, it also brings in the different types of police officers... ones who rides motorcycles, bicycles, boats, etc. The kids found it interesting for they had never considered that police officers are in those place.

This book shows different police officers and what different kinds of jobs they do. It has all real pictures and is part of a series of "I want to be" books. My daycare has loved and responded well to all of the books in this series...a great addition to any early childhood setting.

Only book anywhere about police for 2nd graders.

Clear, defined pictures that relate to policing in the United States. Excellent for young children.

This is not an exhaustive review of the history of the Church, I’m not sure that volume could ever be written. This is a series of sermons preached by a Scottish minister on the eve of the turning of the century. Each chapter looks a one century beginning with the first and ending with the 20th. I read this book devotionaly one chapter a day, it challenges, stirs and blesses! I highly recommend this book!

I have enjoyed this book a lot, but I was a little disappointed in how vague each century was written. It leaves out a LOT of details but it is very well written and you get the general overview of each century. I was a little disappointed in the lack of detail, but over all it's a good book to have in your library.

An expanded form of this originally appeared at The Irresponsible Reader.---After a stirring (yes, really) introduction that lays out the purpose of this volume, why the study of Church History is important and what can be gained from even the figures from Church History that may disagree with -- Ferguson dives in to his survey. I really can't say enough good about this introduction -- which feels odd, that's not supposed to be the best part of a book (and it isn't, actually -- but it's good enough that it really could be). The body of the book is twenty chapters -- in case you couldn't guess, that's one chapter for each completed century Anno Domini (and Ferguson is committed to the usage of that).Each chapter starts with an excerpt from a noted piece of writing from the century in question -- like The Martyrdom of Polycarp, On the Incarnation, Gottschalk;s Shorter Confession concerning Double Predestination, and Savonarola's The Triumph of the Cross (noted, not necessarily commonly known, obviously). Following that Ferguson summarizes the events of that century -- focusing on particular figures or movements that stand out. Most of these will be at least familiar to the reader by name, if not for activities and attributes. This book is primarily intended as an introduction to Church History, and it excels at being one. First of all, it gives you the good bird's eye view from the day after the last chapter of Acts to the present. Which is a perspective that's all too easy to lose in the details -- we've got to see the forest. But the trees are also important -- and Ferguson gives enough detail (while remembering that these are brief summary chapters) that the reader can get a handle on a particular century and learn enough that they can pursue what they're interested in.Even if the history wasn't that helpful, Ferguson's application and the hymn made the book worthwhile. Sometimes that application is comforting, sometimes it's challenging -- it's always helpful. And the bonus of having that hymn? That's a wonderful, devotional way to bring history to life -- that's the same Lord, the same faith being proclaimed in these words. Loved that. Starting the chapters with a doctrinally rich (if occasionally problematic) excerpt reminds us that our faith is first and foremost about truth, about ideas -- but those find expression in the heart and life of the believer -- as seen in the hymns.Yes, it's a weakness that this book focuses on the Western Church -- particularly that represented in the English, Scottish and American branches. Ferguson admits that at the beginning, but that's his tradition, that's his background -- and that's the background for most of his, readers, too -- so it's what's most relevant. To go beyond that would result in a tome unwieldy and not that handy for his audience (as great as it would be to see).The structure of head (excerpt), life (history) and heart (hymn) is a fantastic outline for this book -- and everything hung on that outline is clearly-written, helpful to the Christian and relevant (if only to say "don't be like that.") Ferguson knocked it out of the park with this one, and I can't recommended it highly enough. Great for personal use, family devotion, Sunday Schools, Home Schools -- you name it, there's someone who can benefit from this book.Disclaimer: I received this eARC from Reformation Trust Publishing via NetGalley.

Sinclair Ferguson and Reformation Trust should be ashamed of themselves for publishing such a superficial overview of Church history at such an enormous cost. It is a total rip-off. This same book here in hardback for $18.00 called In the Year of Our Lord, was published by Reformation Heritage Books in a pocket size paperback called Church History 101 for $5.00. That is blatant deceit and corruption! And the paperback version isn't even worth $5.00. This is more evidence of growing corruption in the church, and it is getting worse with book sales and book publishing. It seems to me that reformed pastors and their publishers are going apostate. The Reformers and Puritans did not cheapen the Gospel by any of this kind of greed and personal vanity. Most of them didn't even want to publish their books, and their works are vastly superior than modern works. I believe it was R.C. Sproul that led the way in the 20th century for such ungodliness, covetousness, price gouging, and ministerial corruption among those who profess to be reformed! When Jesus cleansed the temple, He overturned the tables and whipped the money changers out for good reason. The book isn't even good. It is trivial and directed to ignoramuses. Each chapter is no more than 4-5 pages long in the tiny paperback version. Who is Ferguson writing this book for? Mothers to read to their toddlers? My 12 year old son read it in a single afternoon, and even said it was a trivial little book. At 12 even he recognized that the book presents a grossly ignorant and anti-American view of modern church history. There is not a single chapter in the book that does justice to any century of church history. NOT ONE! And it is utter hypocrisy and flattery for reformed pastors to promote this book just because of the name and author. He should be ashamed of passing this off as an overview of church history. The chapter's on the 18th-20th century are even grossly misleading. There is not a single comment about the Church in America (as if it doesn't exist), no comment about the Colonial Puritans, the American Revolution and the Protestant establishment in America,19th century Protestant America, the Princeton theologians, the 20th century Fundamentalist movement, the American missionary movement that has led to the evangelization of the world, etc... Ferguson seems to think that the British Empire still exists. What a joke? Worse than that, Ferguson speaks more about heretics like Schleiermacher, Barth, Tillich, and others in the 19th and 20th century, instead of real Evangelical and Reformed Christians (DL Moody, the Hodges, Warfield, Van Til, etc..) that influenced the church in the modern era. The book is a total mockery that shows how ignorant, stupid, and ungodly reformed pastors and denominations are today! You can get a hundred times more information on every century of church history for free on the internet, and even from wikipedia articles. This book is not a reformed view of church history, no matter what kind of flattery is piled on by others. This book shows just how unreformed and ungodly the church actually is today, and how corrupt and deceitful reformed leaders and publishing companies are today! Ask yourself this question, if you know anything at all about church history. Do you think Calvin or Knox or any Puritan would publish such a shallow and misleading book, and have people pay such a price? HELL NO! God forgive such blatant hypocrisy and foolishness among pastors today. And to think, Sinclair just published a new book on ministry called "Some Pastors and Teachers." Confederate cavalry leader John Mosby is among the most romantic characters in the Civil War, and with good reason. From 1863 to the end of the conflict, Mosby's raiders were a constant headache for the North. Although more than 1,000 men served under Mosby, they usually acted in small detachments of several dozen, sacking supply depots, attacking railroads, and harassing federal troops. They seemed to move behind enemy lines almost at will, and in what is perhaps their most celebrated exploit, a handful of them led by Mosby himself rode into Fairfax Station, Virginia, in the dead of the night and kidnapped a Union general. When they were not on missions, Mosby's riders simply melted into the countryside, finding safe haven in the homes of sympathetic civilians. Theirs was a guerilla war. The frustrated North eventually assigned a special contingent of cavalry to combat them, and a price was ultimately put on Mosby's head. Nobody reined him in, however, and his command enjoyed the proud distinction of never having formally surrendered to the bluecoats. Shortly after Appomattox, Mosby simply disbanded his unit. This is another fine book from the prolific Civil War historian Jeffry D. Wert, who hardly could have picked a more intriguing subject. --John J. Miller

Jeffry D. Wert is the author of eight previous books on Civil War topics, most recently Cavalryman of the Lost Cause and The Sword of Lincoln. His articles and essays on the Civil War have appeared in many publications, including Civil War Times Illustrated, American History Illustrated, and Blue and Gray. A former history teacher at Penns Valley High School, he lives in Centre Hall, Pennsylvania, slightly more than one hour from the battlefield at Gettysburg.

Enjoyed the read and learned a few things. Great subject matter and wonderful history. I somehow think it could have been written in a slightly more interesting manner, but overall I would still recommend the book.

This is a great book for those who enjoy immersing themselves in the life and mindset of Civil War times. It places you in the midst of the Rangers' forays, the hardships they endured, and their daring and determination. So much of what was central to their lives--for example, their reliance on and mastery of horsemanship--has disappeared forever. A personal connection led me to this book, after I learned that my great-great-grandfather fought with Mosby's Rangers--and I was thrilled to find his name listed in the appendix. But anyone who is interested in gaining a whole understanding of the Civil War should read this book, as it looks into a kind of fighting other than the movements of mass armies, that nevertheless played a vital role in the overall conflict.

If you are interested in Mosby's Rangers, this is a great book. This is NOT a biography of John S. Mosby, though. It is a biography of the unit, with special attention towards the leader. The depth with which Wert has researched the individuals in the group provides a clear picture into the inner workings of the Rangers, and the civilians living within Mosby's Confederacy. The book was gripping, especially for someone who grew up and lives on the edge of Mosby's Confederacy.I would warn others, though, that the lack of maps (Only one at the beginning of the book that charts all of Northern Virginia), can lead to confusion about the whereabouts of the Rangers, their adversaries, or allies, as well as the general positions of the people when in conflict. This is a let down to me since Wert included many maps in "Longstreet" to help transplant people to the Tennessee and Virginia battlefields, but I had to rely on my own knowledge of the area for Mosby's Rangers.

I was a longtime reader of Patrick F. McManus books, and considered him the ultimate writer of hunting and fishing humor. When I discovered Bill Heavey's works I went in thinking that at best his work would be a lessor version of McManus. MAN WAS I WRONG!!! Bill is at least on even footing with Patrick, both struggling over who should be at the top of the mountain. While Patrick's writings are more Western US based, Bill on the other hand brings something special that I can relate to with his stories of people, places, and adventures on and around the Potomac River. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND both of these authors anytime you're looking for some humorous reading that doesn't require deep analysis to understand the stories being delivered as if the reader were sitting around a campfire listening to someone with tremendous life experiences.I should just mention that having lead a "sheltered life", meaning I didn't discover the entertainment value of reading until later in life, I had never been introduced to either of these authors through their multitude of magazine article in "FIELD and STREAM", and other monthly publication for the fishing and hunting public. Too Bad - My Loss!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As an avid subscriber to field and stream I love this mans column. I enjoy his humor and his life lessons. His connections with his father, his Ex-wife, children, and the healing he found nature after one of the worst experiences a human being are all experiences that create a bigger picture of Bill Heavey as more then a humorist. yes Bill has a humorous way to looking at things most of the time. He writes of experiences that create a full picture of his life, allowing us into intimate parts of his life that complete his outdoor experiences. sometimes as a fellow outdoors man and specifically in one case a parent. He yanks on my heart strings combining my love of the outdoors and my love for my children in way i hope to never understand and brings a reader to their knees.When I'm out in nature, either hunting, hiking, or fishing I enjoy the solitude of being by myself and more importantly i enjoy the interactions with my own mind. The chance i get to puzzle through events, talk to myself, and process information and experiences some of them years old. I appreciate the way this guys mind works and will definitely buy any more books he writes.

Going into this I was expecting a bunch of comical stories about hunting and fishing. While there were some pretty funny stories included, there were quite a few that I found to be downright sad. The auther does tell some humorous stories about his trips afield, but he also tells some personal stories about his family and about some trips that ended pretty badly.This book is a nice reminder for those of us who struggle to balance everyday life with an outdoor life that we are not alone, and that - despite what the hunting & fishing shows would have you believe - the average outdoorsman experiences a much higher rate of failure than of success. But despite the failures, you have to be able to laugh it off and keep going whether it's hunting, fishing, or everyday life.

Despite my being a fly fisher and not a hunter, I greatly enjoyed Harvey’s stories for their variety and sincerity. Beneath his self-effacing humor are experience and skill, a good heart, and a sensitive soul. He had me laughing aloud one minute and tearing up the next. He taught me a great deal about hunting and about why not to do what I like best, fly fishing. But we share a common love of being in nature and of not taking ourselves too seriously.

A great book for the majority of hunter, fisherpeople who don't always shoot, catch, find record breaking game, or any at all. He has a humor style that I really enjoy. He also writes from the heart about some gut wrenching personal experiences. Most of the material is taken from his Field and Stream writings but is well compiled. Written from the viewpoint of a middle aged man living in suburbia who is learning to hunt and fish and knows that it isn't always easy. I would recommend this book for husbands, dads and every other average outdoors man or Woman who enjoy the chase.

This was a really entertaining book. I thought it would be mostly witty one page throw-away columns pulled directly from magazines that Mr. Heavey writes for. But the book was well edited and laid out. There were definitely some Field & Stream last page short and sweet one liners in here but they are sprinkled throughout the book with more well written articles on hunting and life in general. The book was surprisingly thoughtful and at moments, touching, while still being light-hearted and entertaining. I'm always looking for literature more on the "why" of hunting than the "how-to" and I found Mr. Heavey articulated the "why" so well with some of the stories in this book. I found I could relate a lot to Mr. Heavey - I can 100% be classified as a hunter (and almost everything else in life) as having more passion than skill. So I saw a lot of myself in the stories and was able to laugh along with Mr. Heavy's antics. This is a great book for anyone who enjoys the outdoors without taking themselves too seriously.
