The results of their research show that life did not and could not have happened by chance.For most of us, including most of the biologists, this extension of science into information is shaking the foundations of science. The fine tuning of the universe, the beginning of life, the first cell and the ordering of the bases along the DNA are all examples of how important information has become in the last 50 years. I've been a software engineer for almost 40 years and I always had the feeling that there was something wrong with random mutation and natural selection creating complex systems. That doesn't work for writing software and so why would it work for DNA?This book took my feelings about the subject and laid them out mathematically. Now it's much more clear where those feelings came from and why undirected evolutionary mechanisms can't work. Great book!

I enjoyed this book immensely. The arguments are powerful and devistating for those that can appreciate them. Unfortunately only mathematicians and electrical engineers study information theory, and most biologists can't seem to grasp it's basic ideas, let alone it's profound implications. Darwin's hypothesis would have never gotten off the ground if we knew then what we know now.

Having a Bachelors and Master’s degree in Computer Science, and being intrigued by the failures of Darwinian evolution, I truly found this to be my favorite book on Evolution. To have one book touch on two of my favorite topics was a rare find!The information in this book is phenomenal. It baffles me to see so many logical, rational individuals refusing to give up on Darwinian evolution despite the overwhelming evidence against it.OUTSTANDING BOOK.

Amazing read. Computer simulations that attempt to validate Evolution do exactly the opposite. All programs are programmed.

This is a fine Introductory text.

A good overview of the informational challenges within evolution, especially digital evolutionary systems.

GMH. has. penned a western thriller, which begins with ex Confederates attacking the farms of Union families. One family is killed and the young boy who threw the glitches into the house sees the children and quits. His Mother sends him West to seek his future. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

As usual, Hopf delivers a great read! I know sagas aren't popular in this genre, but man, I wish this stuff was on the big screen.

It is to my great regret that when I purchased "The Firebrand and the First Lady: Portrait of a Friendship" by Patricia Bell-Scott almost a year ago, circumstances did not permit me to immediately begin to enjoy it. Part of the difficulty was purely mechanical. This is a weighty book, and as a sufferer of carpal tunnel syndrome, frankly my hands were unable to handle it. Subsequent to surgery, I am now prepared to deal with the physical challenge.In any event, although I am only starting to read this wonderful dual biography and culturally highly-relevant narrative, I must say that I am profoundly glad I purchased it. The story is both fascinating and deeply moving, and the sociopolitical aspects handled with extreme sensitivity and brilliance. The photographs which head each chapter are extraordinary, and the notes and index detailed and extensive. This is a wonderfully scholarly work that reads like a novel and a priceless addition to my personal library.

This is truly a very important book. It traces an extraordinary friendship between Eleanor Roosevelt (a giant public figure renowned throughout the world for the cause of freedom and equality) and Pauli Murray. I did not know who Paul Murray was when I first came upon this book. Pauli Murray was a rare gift outright for all of the struggles of the American people. She was at the forfront linking and fighting for the equality of women, African-American, against Jim Crow, lyncing and for civil rights, labor , the poor., and people of different sexual orientations. I could not put this book down. She was truly a women ahead of her times. The author, Professor Patrica Bell-Scott, a renowned intellectual, spent 20 years researching this book. It is beautifully written and a joy to read. Don't miss it.

This book enlightened me about these two tough women. I have to say I didn't finish it- as did two other women in my bookclub. The book just seemed `more of the same' type of information. Both women were amazing, and so I feel bad not finishing the book, but perhaps the writing could have helped the storyline read better. Incredible, detailed research was done for this book.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about history and the struggle for human rights early in the 20th Century. This book sits at the intersection of the civil and women’s rights movement. Pauli Murray was a woman of extraordinary talent and person too few know about. Her relationship with Eleanor Roosevelt a towering figure provides the reader with deeper insight into what motivated Ms. Roosevelt in many of her public pronouncements and actions. The reader won’t be sorry about taking the time to read what made these two important women tick.

I always love reading more about the remarkable life that Eleanor R led but to learn for the first time about Pauli Murray & her amazing life story...so empowering to see first hand how Pauli reached out to the First Lady AND Eleanor reached back - beginning a remarkable friendship, with progressive activism at the heart of their relationship. Great book! Excellent writing & great material.

Must read for all women especially and all men and women of color. Learning about the Collaboration of Pauli Murray and Eleanor Roosevelt and the magnitude of their accomplishments blew me away. I have recommended this book to every thinking man, woman and child I know. I wish I could personally thank them for their bravery.

You should talk to your daughter.And I go like, She speaks regular English. Maybe I should hit social media a little more.And she goes like, Whatever, John. And BTW. Use the f-word a little f-ing more. Because it’s the f-ing in thing now, you know what I f-ing mean?And I’m like, I f-ing know. I just didn’t know if you’d be f-ing into it.And she goes like. I’m f-ing into it John. We’ve gotta reach the kids. They’re the f-ing future.And I’m all like, Yeah, I f-ing know.Then she goes like, And put more silliness and Heartwarming Sentiment into the f-ing sex scenes, John. The kids really go for that. And it’s alright to end your book a little early with a cliffhanger. Don’t worry about the words. Nobody really cares about the words. And no one expects to be satisfied. That's like f-ing last century. We can sell more books, that way. Just like a TV series, make them hang on for a year. The heroine’s not going anywhere.And I'm like, Yeah, I know. TV is the f-ng future.And she’s all like, I’m glad you understand, John. This will be a great book!

I am not one to normally write a review, especially a negative one about an author I generally have warm feelings towards, however, this one merits a brief poor review (almost as brief as the book itself). My main issue with this book has to do with the value of it, for almost fourteen dollars I received a three hour read that felt at best incomplete. I am no speed reader by any means, at best I read at a slightly above average pace. A slow pace would have a reader finishing this in maybe six hours. At one point I checked on my e-reader how much of the book I had left as I was on the start of chapter 4, I had approximately 20% of the book read at that point. I enjoy the authors style often as it is rather direct and for me light on explaining science (I know, I know "science fiction") but it often is rather enjoyable as a space opera. However, if you are going that route creating such a short story is problematic, especially when it is priced so high for a kindle book. Many others felt this way about the first book in this series and while I saw their point this book only exacerbates this to an unholy degree. I hate to give such a negative review but when I finished it I felt like 1/3 of a book does not merit my time or money. I felt cheated.

I really believe in Mr. Scalzi, so: let's go with 5 stars.These two books are entertaining as space opera, peopled with interesting, well developed characters, who held my attention.But, when you reach the epilogue, you will realise: these books are a parable. They're intended to make you stop and think.I didn't like it when Robert A. Heinlein tried to make me think - but only in a way that mirrored himseif. He manipulated circumstances and characters to make his views appear not merely reasonable, but any other view custard-headed. He was one hell of a writer, and so I read everything he wrote, despite personally being custard-headed.These books by Mr Salzi are much more inclusive and even handed than that - or, for that matter this review. Mainly because Mr. Scalzi is a far better writer than I am.Science fiction is the literature of ideas. Those ideas come clothed in a good story. But, the best of science fiction asks us to think.I like thinking. That's why I like science fiction. If you don't like thinking, these may not be the right books for you.I think "The Consuming Fire" is going to be nominated for a Hugo. I hope it wins. And I hope the third book in the series is on Mr. Scalzi's writing schedule.
