This is one of the only books on the subject of Velocity. Velocity is a nice technology for doing template/macro based website without having to use a heavy weight toolkit or framework. The book is well organized and paced. I used it's information to jump start my development. Since Velocity has changed overtime this book may not be covering the latest version. However, the basic information and examples are still useful to look at. It went a bit deeper than the online document for Velocity. For that reason alone, I think getting the book is useful.

Harrop puts forth an interesting claim in his book. He offers Velocity as a significant improvement over using JSPs to make dynamic web pages. By now, at least in the Java world, JSPs in combination with servlets, is the most common way to do this. Not the least because it gives a clear implementation of the MVC design pattern.But Harrop points out that JSPs always had an awkward syntax. Which for complex pages leads to miserable, error-prone coding. Plus, the pages might be slow to build. Velocity seems to offer a coding approach that is more natural than JSPs. And you certainly don't have to abandon MVC. Harrops shows how to reimplement MVC, while using Velocity and hooking to a database, and coupled to Struts and Spring.The code examples in the book are not complicated. That too is part of his message.You may want to look closer at the book.

I have always been a strong supporter of Velocity. I even wrote an article for JavaRanch about Velocity back in March. Velocity is an open source template framework designed to simplify the task of generating content such as web pages, email, or any other text-based output. The Velocity documentation available from Apache is short, low on examples, and leaves holes (even if it is fairly good compared to some other open source projects). This book fills in the gaps and gives excellent coverage of the many features that are available with Velocity.The book starts with an introduction to Velocity and then explains how to install and configure it. The author then discusses the Velocity Template Language, examines its shortcomings, and demonstrates how to get around them. Best practices are covered early in the book. Although Velocity is normally thought of as a web-based framework, the author doesn't let us forget that it can be used for both stand-alone and web applications and gives us detailed chapters on both. Velocity tools are well covered including Anakia, which can be used to transform XML. The Velocity architecture is explained as well as ways to extend that architecture.The examples are well thought out and give good coverage of the features of Velocity. The most interesting part of the examples is how little work it is to integrate Velocity into a well-designed framework. The author shows how Velocity fits into both Struts and Spring, demonstrating that Velocity is not meant to replace these frameworks but rather to simplify content generation in any framework. I can strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in Velocity. For anyone not interested in Velocity, the question is, why not?

I am using this book to bring myself up to speed on a project that combines Velocity with Struts. I'm working with Struts and Velocity modules built by a consulting company. Before the project, I didn't know either one. Now I am in the middle of the project and somewhat familiar with both. Most of the velocity commands I am able to figure out pretty quickly without the book, which is good because every time I try to find something ($link.setAction for example, which is needed to obtain the URL for forwarding) it's not there. Maybe I'm missing something, but if I am, it also is not identified in this book. I'm doing much better by referring to my Struts reference(Programming Jakarta Struts) and searching the web.

This is an excellent introduction to the Velocity template engine. It covers the basic use and syntax of the engine, then embedding and extending it. It's very well written and organized.On the downside I think the graphics could have been used more effectively, and I would have liked to have seen more on the basic template syntax. Overall, however, I highly recommend this book to anyone for whom the Velocity template engine is a central part of the architecture.

Although the first few chapters provide a good description of the Velocity Template Language and how to drive it, I found myself progressively flipping pages after that. I also read Harrop's Pro Spring, which was much more information-dense despite being over twice the size of this book.If you are not yet familiar with concepts like MVC, layered application design, Struts, Spring etc: ignore the previous ;-)

It is a good book, nevertheless be careful to try to take the Java code for your production environment, in page 189 when it is explaining about the shopping cart makes money operations with type double when should be used BigDecimal in this case.

This is great. You know some books are too much to understand. This book starts easy and adds alittle more at a time. I love the flat 7 technique and the blues scale. It is all explained. I will get more books in the School Of Series. Joe Carr does a very good job.

Typical well written helpful guide that I am used to from Mel Bay. Truly helpful for a guitarists switching to the tuning in fifths.

The only other mandolin book I have used was a beginners book, this is a good follow-up if you like bluegrass and practice picking. The CD really makes it easy to use even if you don't have an instructor.

Really comes across like it was written by Archer! Lots of laugh out loud moments. I enjoyed it. Totally want to try making those $100 eggs.

I admit to being an enormous Archer fan, but I still would never give a poorly written stack of regurgitated jokes five stars. This book delivers the laughs, especially if you know anything about the show. Which I do.But, humor being completely subjective, I still feel compelled to at least dispel a couple shameful myths put forth by other reviewers.MYTH: "...three out of four jokes are ripped word for word from episodes of Archer..."FACT: Let's do some math, shall we? Archer states at the start of the book that he's contractually obligated to produce a manuscript of no shorter than 30,000 words and will, therefore, deliver a manuscript of precisely 30,000 words. As I read the book the second time, I highlighted every word I could find that either retold a joke from the show or even so much as referred to a joke from the show. I even highlighted Alex Karras (whom Lana mentions in Archer S1 E10) even though the joke about him is completely different. Total word count on reused jokes: 322. That's 1.073%. So, essentially, the book is 99% new content.MYTH: This book "substitute[s] rehashed dry jokes for actual information" and is "not much of a guide to anything."FACT: This is a book by Sterling Archer, so if you're expecting an encyclopedia on the finer points of covert ops, you haven't been paying attention. Spoiler Alert: you won't actually learn how to become an international spy by reading this book. That said, unless you already know the recipe for Green Russians, or the proper way to prepare Eggs Woodhouse, or how to say "Would you like to have sex with me?" in 17 languages (including Portuguese, of course), then I can assure you this book has plenty to teach you.For example, from the section on page 19 regarding the martial art of Savate:"Savate is French for 'face kick.' And while the French have a reputation for being effeminate... I think this is unfair. Because they also have...the French Foreign Legion. So the next time you're feeling adventurous, walk into a bar in Algiers and call a Legionnaire a putain de merde. Then walk outside and feel around in the sand with your hands, trying to find your head."Not the greatest advice, but at least you learned something (and I bet you laughed, too).

If you read this book and it's not in Archer's voice (except for the foreword, which his mother kindly provided), then this isn't the book for you.This book is the ultimate guide as to how to be like Archer; it's not another episode converted into paper form in an effort to make Archer millions of dollars (though he does admit that the book is an effort to make said millions of dollars). You will learn many useful tidbits in this book: how to ask women if they want to have sex with you in 16 languages... How to make Eggs Woodhouse (the most expensive breakfast you'll ever have)... Great for Archer fans. I am new to the show and just finished binge watching the first 8 seasons. I was searching for some books on my Kindle, and for some reason, this one came up as a recommendation. It probably came up because I did watch a couple of episodes on my Kindle using the Xfinity app on OnDemand.Don't believe the bad reviews. It is an entertaining read. You just can't keep from reading it in Archer's voice.

I'm a huge Archer fan, and when I saw this book I knew I had to buy it. After finishing it within a day, the only thing that disappointed me was that I was done. Reading it with the voice of H. Jon Benjamin in your head, this book is a hilarious sideshow. Archer's jerk attitude and chauvinistic tone shine through every word, and every line... including the footnotes and graphics.Anybody who watches and loves the tv show, won't be disappointed by this book.If you pay attention, and wait another 1000 years for God to gift you the good looks and brains of Sterling, you just might be able to get on his level... or not. I mean, there can only be one "best" at picking up women, and being a world famous spy, and Sterling has both of those covered already.;)

Reading level is "easy to understand" with basic language and easy to understand reports of events.Claims likely to raise eyebrows can be thinly referenced, but the handful I checked were readily verified. Details on Walmart required paying for information, but after paying up, the facts on file verified the author's reportage. My thinking is this is an accurate (read, 'high quality') reference on the state of the nation's political and economic degeneration.Not really sure what to say except that even well-informed readers who value America's tradition of economic opportunity for unexceptional Americans are likely to be sickened reading detailed accounts of the purposeful degradation of America's private sector middle class at the hands of local, state, and federal officials under the influence of corporations seeking cash or protection (or both) from ordinary taxpayers.There are any number of similar books which are in essence follows of the 1980s-1990s "America" trilogy by Barlett and Steele. They wrote about it when the snake's head was just coming out from under the rock. Now the snake has ordinary Americans in its mouth.Whether America's character can be restored to the level of the nation that once flew the "Don't Tread On Me" flag remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, the average American, uninformed and rapidly losing his/her place in the vanishing middle class, struggles to get by while the privileged siphon to themselves more and more of the resources and money available for their own personal greed and endless bulging of their mountains of wealth. If allowed to continue, this situation will definitely lead to the end of our middle class and finally the end of our democracy. If anyone cares, get motivated now and take action. Demand change from our government officials!!!

Hang onto you Hat and Wallet - as David Cay take you into the realm of the privelged few - the feed on the efforts of those of us that produce! I really don't understand how D. C. does it without a heart attack! I've seen him before Congress and the House testafying; it appers the problem is - those are the folks that have a better idea for us - and his words are for you and me. What to do? Another important read - from which you can actually begin to put together what you are really going through in this economy. Not a fun read - but and important one!

Johnson is an excellent writer and reporter, this is yet another very disturbing account of how the privileged few abuse our systems! I see no way to change this trend other than for citizens of the USA to limit contributions to our representatives, as presently the people are not being served as designed by our constitution!

I've read all three books in this trilogy and I strongly recommend everyone read these. They will definitely cause some increased concern and probably result in some good conversations, which is what the US needs. The majority of news reported rarely if ever provides this much information in a clear and concise presentation of facts and views. One of the best things about the book are the last two chapters where possible solutions are discussed and where many of the references are provided.After checking the book out from the library and reading it I was so impressed that I bought the trilogy for my personal library, so I will have it on hand to review again when I'm discussing the subject with others.

Like Mr. Johnston's outstanding, previous book, "Perfectly Legal," he explains in laymen's terms the horrible actions by Washington politicians as well as corporations and the obnoxiously rich. In "Free Lunch," the author clearly shows how companies such as Cabela's and Tyco alarm systems rob from taxpayers and can account for their wealth by this thievery. He also lays bare the tax subsidies in such areas as golf courses, home-title insurance, electrical deregulation, healthcare, tax shelters, the prescription drug giveaway, railway safety, hedge funds,and stock options awarded to even poor performing executives. Warren Buffett and Steve Jobs halos also get tarnished. All these corporate welfare laws have been designed at the expense of American society. He also shows how this is a systemic problem of massive proportions. This book is neither a conservative nor liberal screed, but an argument about why despite America's wealth doubling since 1980 most citizens are working harder and struggling to make a living. We're in this pickle not because of services to the poor but due to political largess towards the wealthy. The book was published in 2007 before the market meltdown and Mr. Johnston saw it coming. As the author said, "Policies that work against the general welfare undermine a society." I wish everyone would read this wonderful, infuriating, sometimes funny book and wake up.

I stumbled upon an anti-David Cay Johnston blog called "David Cay Johnston Watch". On it the author attempts and fails at a smear campaign on Mr. Johnston. Instead of attacking the authenticity of the data in the book, the blogger chose to attack Mr. Johnston himself. Why not attack the data? the facts? or at least the arguments made in "Free Lunch""? I still haven't found a credible attack on the facts, real life examples, and cold hard data that Johnston collected. Johnston points out over and over and over again that our system has been given over the super wealthy and powerful to take from the many to give to the few. Social welfare is not our problem, it is corporate welfare that hurts our markets, hurts our economy and only benefits a few. READ THIS BOOK!
