Tariq Thachil’s _Elite Parties, Poor Voters: How Social Services Win Votes in India_ is one of the best political science books I’ve read in a long time. The research design is carefully conceived and superbly executed, and the writing is clear and convincing. This book should be on the reading list for any graduate course in qualitative research design or research design in general.One of the strengths of Thachil’s book is its mixed-methods design, which integrates macro data with in-depth field work and surveys conducted on-site in rural villages. This multi-level approach allows him to test hypotheses at a variety of levels to triangulate support for his theory. Because his theory argues that social services buy votes not as quid pro quo but instead by creating its party cadres as valuable, respected members of the community – opinion leaders, if you will, exercising soft power instead of hard – an important part of the evidence had to come from party cadres themselves as well as from the poor rural voters. The theory has implications at the level of Indian states, which are the primary alternative providers of social services, at the level of party and party activist behavior, and at the level of voters, and Thachil’s careful, precise design captures all three.Not being an expert on India, I can’t say whether there possibly were better locations to have chosen, but the justifications (and data) given in the book for the choices and comparisons were sufficiently convincing for this reader. The mix of descriptive and inferential statistics used created appropriate but still accessible support for the claims, and the claims made were reasonable interpretations of the available evidence. Appropriate attention was paid to interpreting non-events and the absence of evidence. I was thoroughly convinced after reading this book, and that’s not a claim I make lightly or frequently.

Good biographical coverage of the pillars / founders of the Baptist movement - esp. those of the SBC. If you like [...], you will like this book. Not much treatment given to the "liberal" side of the house, so that information will have to be obtained elsewhere.

This book helped me better understand the Baptist theological heritage of which I'm a part in the SBC. Also too, the extensive listing of each theologian's bibliography will prove useful in furthering my understanding.

Most of the books I read are a chore or mandatory, especially dealing with theology and Church History. However, this one was sheer delight. There have long been jokes about the ignorace of Baptists, for instance, "Whatis the difference between a Presbyterian and a Baptist? A Presbyterian is a Baptist that can read?" We Baptists may be known for our evangelistic fervor, but not for our Theological heritage. This book introduces the reader to minds that have been rivaled only by Calvin, Luther and the rest. The purpose of the book is to move the reader to study Baptist theology and, if a Baptist, to appreciate one's heritage. If not a Baptist, then to understand, evualuate, and appreciate this denomination's contribution to orthodox Christianity. Nor, are all these theologian's academicians, George and Dockery to a great job of combining mighty pastors (Spurgeon and Criswell, for a few) and Classroom theologians (Garret, Erickson and others). Of special interest are the chapters on A T Robertson, J Broadus, Spurgeon, and Criswell.

This book is a historical survery of baptists, mainly from the standpoint of theology. Although this book does discuss history in general, it is much more concerned with the development of Baptist thought and literature over time as opposed to a specific lineage of Baptist people and places. The book is divided into many short chapters, each devoted to a different historical Baptist theologian. Overall I think this book is very good; the historical information is well researched and informative and the discussion of historical theology is very insightful. Anyone looking for a brief yet interesting survery of Baptist thought and famous figures will find that this book should suit them well.

This is a very good start for someone trying to understand the often confusing world of the Baptist way(s). No religious tradition of our world is a monolith of theology, practice etc., this book tries in a pleasant and straight forward way to explore what makes up Baptist. It is general but at least tries to put things in a somewhat order.

Even though sex was becoming cheap when we met and courted, in our community it was greatly discouraged and we both knew that wasn't what we wanted. What fun it was to be wooed and won by my husband, who has since been faithful, a great provider and a fabulous father to our 5 children. If people want permanent love and strong intact families, this is the best way to get there. Regnerus amply shows that cheap sex makes such happy endings very difficult and precarious. Unfortunately, all unmarried people are part of the market that demands cheap sex whether they want to be or not. Can this be changed? Change in this realm is very difficult because it requires understanding the problem, the cooperation of all women together, and basic social mores that force men to pay the price for love.Interestingly, this book is about the marriage market and the role sex plays in it, not so much about the spiritual and relational joys of marriage, but ultimately it is about these too, because cheap sex more often than not destroys the possibility of these higher and deeply satisfying goods. In its place, sex is an important glue that holds marriage together, produces children and gives the couple something wonderful they can share. Wrongly used, it kills romance, family and everything it touches.

I'd like to mention two things vis-a-vis the critics: First Professor Regnerus announces his bias at the beginning of the book. Everybody is biased. It is nice to know where the author stands so we can shade our opinions of what he says accordingly. We can never be without bias.Second, Professor Regnerus offers a number of predictions of how the trends he addresses will play out in future. These predictions give the book a certain immunity from criticism: if you want to prove Regnerus wrong, you don't have to opine, to cite evidence or to come up with witty rejoinders. All you have to do is wait. And you'll see if he was right or wrong.I have a sneaking suspicion that somebody who thought as deeply on these issues is going to be more right than wrong.I'd also like to draw your attention to a sentence on page 62 of the book. "In truth, I was wrong about Tinder (though nobody knew it because I never publicly wrote about it)."He then goes on to explain the nature of his incorrect prediction. I hope you see what's happening here. Prof. Regnerus is admitting a mistake. But he's not just doing that. He's GRATUITOUSLY admitting a mistake. Nobody could possibly have caught him in that error, because his error was never published. Yet he wants the reader to know how his previous thinking was wrong, and how the facts have corrected that mistake. Everybody is wrong all the time. Only the best of us admit it. That admission (along with the many times the author tells you he's guessing because the facts we have at hand are incomplete) lends more credibility to this book than anything else. His intellectual humility is to be imitated.

I recently purchased this book and an about 25% into it - so I may update my review later.So why review the book this early? Because:1. Even at this early point I'm impressed with Regnerus's scholarship on this important issue, and2. The negative "reviews" (a) are *not* verified purchases (sure, I realize not everyone purchases their books at Amazon, but why post a review here otherwise?) (b) are rants rather than thoughtful criticisms. I'd hate to see this book (or any book) be ignored because of negative reviews that don't address the content of the book per se.

It started off interestingly enough, but somewhere around the 65-70% mark I just wanted it to be over. It felt like a none stop series of chase scenes that always resulted in the heroine dropping her gun but ultimately escaping. Dialogue and action become forced as the author introduced more characters, most who's purpose was only to die within a few short paragraphs. It became particularly tedious when the group reached the supposed safe haven of Site R. The entire interaction with the military and ensuing battle was forced to the breaking point. Characters kept secrets/held back information for no reason other than to, I assume, create suspense or future narrative/dialogue. While the action was non stop, the plot failed to truly advance until the very end, and that end was massively anti-climactic. The editing was good. I don't recall any real typos of note. The author could do with some fact checking however. Propane tanks don't explode if you shoot them and Army Humvees definitely don't need to be on to lower the window. Windows in hummers are amazingly primitive.

Val has been on her own for the last 4 months since the Great Discovery turned the world upside down. She lives by her own rules of survival, avoiding the inhuman Raspers and trying her best to stay alive. When she encounters Adam, the only person she has seen in that time, she is instantly leery. Adam ends up saving her life, and Val has no choice but to give him a chance. But Adam has a secret, one that Val may not be able to forgive. Can the two of them stay alive long enough to find answers about the Great Discovery?In case I have not made it clear in my many reviews of dystopian books, I am a huge fan of this genre. I think I must have high expectations when it comes to my end of the world adventures and recently I have been disappointed in what I have read. This story did not let me down, I am happy to say. It was unique enough that I did not feel like I had read this exact story before, and there was plenty of action to keep me engaged. I blew through the story in about a day because it was a fast read due to the writing style, the action was well done and the twists were not things that I could predict. I also appreciated the dose of reality the author threw in, with real life survival scenarios and near death events where not everyone makes it out alive and at times it can be gory and gruesome. Oh and the creepiness factor was appreciated, especially when it comes to the black slime stuff and the “hive”.At times Val drove me insane. She reacts as if she is the boss at all times (and in every scenario), and sure she has been on her own doing ok for months, but still she is an inexperienced 16 year old girl. I do like that she had previous training on weapons from her SWAT team father, it made her survival more believable to me. But anyway, she had such an attitude and kinda sorta treated Adam awful that there were plenty of times that if I had been him I would have peaced out. She is called a “bitch” at one point, and if the shoe fits and all… Adam on the other hand was just so mellow, caring and intuitive at times, it was slightly unbelievable as a traumatized 16 year old boy. But whatever. Val was the main characters and had a very strong personality, that despite my issues with her attitude she was an interesting perspective.I was glad the truth behind the Great Discovery was addressed in this book instead of just adding to the huge pile of questions the ending gave me. I like the direction the story took and I am just as curious as Val is as to why she is wanted. I can’t wait to read more because there has to be at least one more book to finish the saga this book began.

This story is a breath of fresh air in the YA/Post apocalyptic genre. This is a story about a strong young teenager forced to learn to survive on her own. A young teenager who finds out she is not the only non-rasper alive. She has developed 3 rules to follow. #1 is "Trust No one". When she is confronted by Adam, also a non-rasper teenager, she starts to ignore her 3 rules and her life changes.Val and Adam join together and try to get to the safe zone Adam's father told him about.This is full of action, excitement, drama, perseverance, and survival. Just when you think you have the story figured out, Miss Groger injects a twist.I really enjoyed this book. Miss Gregor knows how to pull the reader in and captivate them. I really didn't want to put the book down. I read it during lunch at work, on the way home from work, and sitting in front of the television.

Finally--the new fiction series I've been waiting for! Since finishing The Hunger Games trilogy a few years ago, I've been searching for another fiction series to grab my attention, only to end up disappointed. The Colony has outperformed any fiction novel I've read in years. You're hooked right away from the very beginning and you don't want the ride to end! Thank you for "breaking my slump" and producing such a fantastic read--I'll be anticipating the arrival of the next novel in the series!!

I was hooked from the start. It has been a long time since I stayed up to 3 am because I could not put down a book. Engaging characters and fast paced story. Can not wait for the next book from Kathleen Groger.

This was a good story, but a huge premise of the book is this girl and her number rule of not trusting anyone. This rule is mentioned in nearly ever single chapter. What annoys me is that she has no reason to not trust people. She went three or four months not seeing a single human. Where does this trust issue come from? There were a couple of other things that weren't amazing, but for the most part this is a fun book to read.

**slight spoilers**The Colony reminded me of The Walking Dead. If they took a character from the show and made this their backstory (*up until they meet up with the adults), it would fit in perfectly. The raspers are different enough from the tv show that they give this book its unique flavor. The twist on how they came to be was unique. Val was a great character and you were with her to the end.

This is a great book to keep you on the edge of your seat. It's almost non-stop action that keeps you reading well into the morning hours. I loved the flow of the writing and the overall aspect of the book itself. Definitely a new take, one which has me getting the next book now.

Needed this for class. Good textbook. The authors make witty jokes throughout the text. Science humor. Fun stuff :)

This book occasionally uses the first person voice, including examples phrased "when I was a boy..." and "I find it easier to..." which strikes me as very unprofessional. Furthermore, some of the simplifications are inaccurate; electromagnetic radiation (EMR), for instance, is qualified as a fancy way of saying light, which is only true in a certain range of wavelengths, as the chapter explains. Chapter headings are also less-than-professional, as in the aforementioned section on EMR labeled "Let There Be Light." It may be a way of bridging the gap between teacher and student in the eyes of the author, but in my opinion, it is more patronizing than endearing.The explanations are often long-winded and hide important points and definitions in lengthy paragraphs. The glossary could be improved: Planck's constant is referenced in the text but not in the glossary. The rest of the reference section is highly useful but hard to navigate until the student labels the sections with post-it notes him/herself.Formatting is generally easy on the eyes. The use of the color blue in subsection titles, particular atoms of interest in a molecule diagram, underlines, examples, etc. is helpful. Eight glossy, thick pages in the middle show colorful experiments or particularly interesting applications of concepts.The example/solution/test-yourself format of in-text applications of a concept is a useful and well-designed tool. End-of-chapter problems are in just the right difficulty range for a professor to be able to choose a difficulty level and assign problems on all concepts covered. Overall relatively easy to understand and pretty good for homework questions.Paperback version is flimsy -- won't stand up on a bookshelf, covers easily damaged, corners very quickly worn down and bent if the book is carried in a bag or backpack at all.

This book is a great accessory for any college chemistry student. It is on the heavy side but works well with the subject matter.

The book I received had water damage and the seam was coming apart. Still could read everything though.

Great condition

I bought Exploring Chemical Analysis at a very affordable price, I think it was around $35 or $40, which was much more cheaper than purchasing it in a hundred something from the school bookstore. The book was in the perfect condition described, particularly since it was paperback. I received the order in a imely manner, which was about a week after placing the order. Unfortunately, due to a change in my major's curriculum, I won't be needing this book as I might not study Analytical Chemistry.

This text has many of the necessary statistical tests ans analysis for analytical chemistry classes. It does have some odd examples and is hard to follow at times. Overall, it is a helpful book, but could be more useful containing more statistics and better examples

Book came in with pages starting to come out and the pages wrinkled. Other than that it's okay.
