Mr. Adams took me on a revisit of not just Machu Picchu, but deep into the Sacred Valley of the Incas along the Urubamba River and Ollantaytambo and beyond. I absolutely loved how he was able to weave Inca history (of which im a longtime student) Into the arduous adventure of his trek along Bingham's footsteps. I have traveled to Peru over a dozen times and have many friends in the Quechua communities in and around Cusco. I got many a chuckle about the idiosyncrasies of these hardy and unique descendants of the Inca. I found myself nodding in agreement with the author and enjoyed the interspersing of historic accounts and different aspects of interpretation of what remains a mystery to this day.Yes, it was a true rediscovery of Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail which I hiked at the age of 62 in 2002, highlight of my adult life. I'm grateful for the many hours of armchair travel the author provided me as chances are that I will not be able to return unless someone volunteers a golden litter and a couple of handsome chasquis!

I got this and 'The Last Days of the Incas' (by Kim MacQuarrie) as reading material leading up to and while traveling in Peru. 'Last Days' is a heavy historical book (I knew it would be) but I thought I would want some historical background on the ruins and sites we were visiting. 'Turn Right' was more fun and included all the relevant highlights on the historical conflict between the two brothers and Spain's 16th c relationship was with the Incas. I ended up leaving 'Last Days' at a hotel before I finished it.Mark's book contained fun tidbits and factoids that I could share with my travel companions. Sometimes I read whole sections out loud to them. Machu Picchu was the last stop on our 2.5-week journey and it was fun to arrive about the same time Mark did at the end of his book.

Adams, an editor for a travel/adventure magazine, realized that despite his profession he had never been on a proper adventure of his own. For his first endeavor, he chooses to follow in the footsteps of Hiram Bingham, the American explorer often credited with the discovery of Peru’s “lost city” of Machu Picchu.Bingham, who originally received a lot of accolades for his discovery, later became a highly controversial figure. To this day, in fact, arguments about his accomplishments and practices are still taking place, particularly regarding the artifacts that he collected (stole? borrowed?) and took to the United States. There are those who maintain that Machu Picchu was never lost at all; that Bingham merely happened to be the first outsider to come across it. Regardless of whether he truly discovered Machu Picchu or simply became its publicist, Bingham is undoubtedly responsible for worldwide awareness of and interest in the mountain city. Every once in a long while I read a book that's so good I feel I have to write a review. This is one of them. My family and I went to Machu Picchu just a few weeks before I read this, and so of course some of the places mentioned were especially personal, but overall I learned SO MUCH about Hiram Bingham and the "discovery" of Machu Picchu through this book. The author combines history with his own story and personal relationships and I just found his style very enjoyable and educational. I heartily recommend this book if you have any interest in Machu Picchu, Peru, or Indiana Jones. : ) Great book...I was sad when it was over.

My brother and his wife went to Machu Picchu recently; I probably won't ever make it there. I'm looking forward to their first-hand accounts and now that I've read this book I will have more than a vague idea of what they are talking about.I'm not going to regurgitate what other reviewers have said about the author's fun yet informative writing style and how easy it is to understand the historical facts.I loved the cover page artwork, but what REALLY helped me follow the story were the 16 pages of black-and-white photographs, including some dating back to 1911. The 45 photos added immensely to the narrative.If you like reading adventure travel stories, are attracted to South American (and Inca) history, and want to be entertained while you are being educated, you will probably enjoy this book.Now, off to see if Mark Adams has written any other books!

I don't know how it could have been any more perfect. Mr. Adams who writes with a sense of humor and a love of history juxtaposes his grueling trips to Machu Picchu with the trips of explorer, Hiram Bingham who has been given credit for discovering Machu Picchu one hundred years ago. It's not just about the history of the discovery, but also about the events that sourrounded Hiram Bingham for years. An abbreviated biography.Mr. Adams hired a great guide, John, who knew all the right people to hire. John is an interesting and funny man and Mr. Adams describes him so well that I didn't have to see the pictures to know what he looked like.I enjoyed this book completely and would love to make plans to go to Machu Picchu as soon as possible. This book has made me appreciate it so much more than I would have without it.

I used Kittel’s Thermal Physics for my undergraduate statistical mechanics course. I remembered that I had difficulties grasping the main ideas at that time. I can certainly understand the so-so reviews as this book has its good and bad. Statistical physics is one of the harder courses in undergraduate Physics because most Physics courses focus on 1 or 2-particle physics, the concept of many particles is new, the techniques are really different, and some phenomena are not intuitive. On top of that, statistical physics is based on counting states. Since the variables in classical physics are all continuous, statistical physics is typically built on quantum physics, which is not easy to start with. There is no doubt that no book can do a perfect job in explaining statistical/thermal physics for undergraduates.Overall, this book is not a big book, it contains roughly over a semester of materials. I think the first 9 chapters are the core chapters, then the instructor can pick a couple more chapters as applications to wrap up the course. I can see that the style of this book is different from others. One way to present statistical physics is to present the fundamental assumptions, teach students how to count, and to teach us the techniques to analyze systems with constant temperature, constant pressure and so on. Basically, all the abstract formalities and technical details are presented cleanly and coherently at the very beginning, and then applications at the end. Kittel’s book is different. The theories are presented bit by bit, and interlaced with applications such that the concepts and definitions are introduced with a practical context. This way, the book is less abstract, and more fun to read and teach throughout the whole semester. The downside is that the theories are distributed everywhere. It might not be easy to link everything together to see the whole coherent picture of statistical physics, at least not for the first reading of the book.For the intention of the book, I think it is pretty well-written. There are pretty good exercises at the end of each chapter. It does not present statistical physics in the cleanest manner, and this is where the confusion and frustration come from. The merit of this book is that it is not as abstract as other books. This makes it a pretty choice for undergraduates who do not like theories after theories for half of the semester. As a side note, this book is better than Kittel’s Solid State Physics book.

Schroeder's Introduction to Thermal Physics is far more readable, and has a good flow to it. Kittel and Kroemer is terribly disjointed, never treating any idea thoroughly before it jumps to the next idea, then doubling back three chapters later to continue with the previous idea. It's next to impossible to develop any kind of large-scale, qualitative view of the material. Giant ideas are presented practically as footnotes. Entropy gets dropped into your lap in chapter 2 with hardly any discussion, just a formula that explains nothing, followed by an insane number of partial derivatives and Greek letters that aren't connected to any fundamental physical ideas in the text. You can play with math for ten chapters without understanding the actual physics.

I hate this book. It's really unclear. Reading through it made me want to fall asleep. Don't get it unless it's absolutely required for your course.

I rent the book and it came in very good condition. Some wording in the book is a bit confusing, but can be understood through careful thinking.

A rival to T. Hills stat mech books. Very good introduction to the statistics of Themal Physics ie thermodynamics. Uses a very fundimental approach that teaches the math and thermo ideas well. An excellent addition to any thermodymanics liberary, worth getting even if you have to hunt for it out of print!!!!!

The book is in MUCH better condition than I expected. The best and most satisfying used book purchase so far.

I just got back from London and this map, which fits neatly in my hand, made the journey much easier and navigable.I never thought I'd go back to printed maps but London is HUGE and it's hard to get perspective from a Google map. Plus, this one is laminated so it doesn't crumble in my bag. Impressive to see how much info the designer has packed into it -- yet it's still readable. It's got the entire public transportation system, some of the key highlights and tourist attractions, and it spans from Kensington to The City and beyond. Amazing and compact. I found this really helpful walking around London as it covered the main down town area. The subway map was helpful as well. It rained a lot while I was there making the plastic lamination over the map critical to be able to use it the whole time. After carrying and using it for 5 days, it still looks like new. I missed having a broader perspective to get trains to outlying areas, but those were easy to look up on line before I went or get help in the train station. But most of my touring was downtown and easily covered by the map. I still have more to see for next time and will happily use the same map then.

We still need real maps -the electronic ones show too little of a longer trip, get confused, run out of battery life, can't be read in bright sun. We still need real maps, but they are facing stiff competition, so they have to be good: easily folded and re-folded, water-proof, large enough to read on the march and easy to read in poor or too much light. Not many qualify. But the vanDam StreetSmart London is all of the above, and we wish we'd had it with us the last time we got lost (in a taxi!) in London. From now on, we won't leave home for London without this map!

This map of London is chocobloc full of detail—all the important points of interest, Museums, Theatres, Statues in the Parks. Heavens! It even has my hotel on it! It's also laminated.Unfortunately, it is so minuscule, that I'd have to walk around with a magnifying glass like Sherlock Holmes to read it! I do think that they could have made it a tad larger—a couple of inches on all sides—so that the type—and the *streets*—would be legible!To put a spin on it, perhaps it was intended for the under-40's crowd. I suspect, however, it was made small to save a few pennies.I'd rather save my eyesight!

Its utility is pretty good through use so far. It has the very small street where I'm staying in St. James's. This map is actually a set of several different maps of parts of London, not one unified map. So far I have used it more than the pop-up map.

I used sharpie to mark all of the places we were visiting during our stay in London. It was so helpful to visualize where we were. We carried it with us and pulled it out frequently (it was more helpful that gps on the phone sonetimes) It's laminated, so it withstood the drizzly London weather.(And Every time we pulled it out, someone would ask us if we needed help finding something.) Nicest people!!

I am a happy customer. Love this map. I used to get Streetwise laminated maps, but this one is better. Both are accurate, but this is easier to use, names are more visible, maybe because of the fonts they use. I read the reviews before buying this one and almost decided against it because someone mentioned that the letters are too small and not suitable for a person using reading glasses. I have to strongly disagree. I use reading glasses and I have no problems with the size of the letters. In fact, after comparing Streetwise and this one (StreetSmart) I find this one a lot better.

It is extremely detailed - even had the small hotel I was going to stay at on it plus Underground and rail stations clearly marked - very easy to read.

Flowers are pretty and some smell good and there is alot about that in this enjoyable book, but also what colors pollinators see, the cut flower and perfume industry, the role of pollinators in sustaining the fruits and vegetables that the world depends on, flowers in art and poetry, cooking with flowers, floral teas and spice, and how flowers affected scientists from Darwin and Mendel to modern crime forensics. It is a wonderful book on the natural history, economics, and beauty of flowers.

The Reason for Flowers is a delightful read, making a unique contribution on the topic of flowers. As a Registered Dietitian, I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates the role of food and the marvels of nature in our lives. As Stephen Buchmann says, " Flowers sustain and feed us, enriching our lives." This literary book is comprehensive in scope, beginning with the evolution of flowers. Beautifully written.
