I read the book twice. The first time I read it in bits and pieces and, frankly, didn't get a lot out of it. The second time I sat down, focused and read it as a whole; the second approach was much more valuable. So, I recommend that you take the time to read the book in a focused matter; otherwise, if you're like me, you may not get the book's import.Next, you need to understand that the book has a number of mathematical concepts that for a non-mathematician like me, takes some effort to grasp. There are mathematical concepts that I believe that I only dimly understand even after some effort to do so. However, I concluded that this probably more on my shortcomings rather than the author's.So, if you're going to read the book, commit to do so, and, unless you've got a broader mathematical background than I have (one college calculus course), prepare to be challenged. The more I considered the book after my second reading, the more that I felt the challenges merited my effort. I think that it will reward your effort as well.What are the rewards? Most are familiar with the "butterfly effect;" the idea that a butterfly flapping its wings in Argentina, for instance, can cause a tornado in Kansas. The book discusses, among many things, "sensitive dependence," the reality that sometimes small changes can have exponentially large effects across time, and maybe a fairly short time. But there's much more.To my surprise, the book challenges the belief that mathematics can adequately, and always, describe reality. In doing so the book compares the realities faced by physicists and mathematicians. Chaos has defined the mathematical dynamical qualities, of being (1) recurrent, (2) deterministic and (3) sensitive dependence in its initial state. A physical system may be described as chaotic, but it may be difficult, or impossible, to be assured that it possesses all three of these qualities. The author describes why computers can't model chaos systems.Another surprising observation of the book is that we probably can't determine the initial physical state of a table, a garden filled with rabbits, etc., with as much precision as we think. This inability is due to the concept of "noise." Read the book to see what "noise" is and why it affects our ability to make predictions.Chaotic systems are non-linear. The book considers scientific inquiry prior to, and during much of, the 20th century, which dealt with linear systems, and how that experience, and some of the mathematical concepts developed for that experience, was upended by chaos as it developed during the 20th century. So, the book has a history of science component, which I found interesting.Models, such as the ones used for weather forecasting, are examined in detail. The strengths, weaknesses, and evolution of modeling receive careful examination. Can a model, even one with 10,000,000 variables ever truly permit accurate forecasting? Read to find out.Lastly, the author occasionally considers the concept of "truth." If the model and/or the math is bad or inadequate, can one get truth from any effort to model reality. He tells the story of three baseball umpires who explain their views of the game. One says: "I calls 'em as I sees 'me." The second says: "I calls 'em as they are." The third says: "They ain't, until I calls 'em." The author says that chaos pushes us towards the philosophical position of the third umpire. Focus and I think you'll find your efforts rewarded.

I enjoy this short introduction series. I have read several books from this series and have found that it is a good way to learn about topics I have always wanted to learn about but never found the time to study in depth. Nevertheless, I was a little disappointed with this book.I have heard about chaos theory for years and 'the butterfly effect,' that chaos theory invokes has almost become cliché. Yet, I didn't understand what chaos theory was. That is why I picked up this book. Now, after reading it, if I understand rightly, it seems like chaos is an apparent lack of order within a system and chaos theory is an attempt to measure and model uncertainty within particular systems. Even though there is apparent disorder there is an underlying order in which small events can lead to complex results, thus the famous 'butterfly effect.' of chaos theory. The theory actually arose from attempts to understand and model weather patterns, and to predict future weather. It was out of the need to understand uncertainty in weather that the science grew.That was about as far as I got in my understanding of the ideas contained within. The author claimed readers didn't need to be mathematicians to understand what he was saying about chaos. Sure, he never threw any formulas at me. Yet, much of the concepts and jargon was derived from math. I feel to really appreciate what he was saying about chaos theory one needs a solid background in math. I found some of the jargon and math ideas intimidating and didn't feel like I was comprehending all of the concepts that the author was trying to communicate.Again, could have the author communicated the concepts better, or does the reader need the background to understand what the author was saying?I will leave that up to other readers to decide. Maybe they will appreciate the thoughts contained within better than I did. Yet, regardless, I recommend books from this series. It is a good way to quickly get up to speed on intellectual topics in vogue. I hope that the editors continue to produce new books in this series.

This book is more than just an introduction to chaos. it is a deep dive in the question of uncertainty, noise and modeling accuracy, including mathematical, scientific, statistical and philosophical points of view. it offer a deep analysis and great food for thought. while the first part of the book is ready to follow down to the details, the second part becomes increasingly more complex, requiring a deeper know-how to be correctly comprehended. But at the dentist the goal of the book was just to be a short introduction.

I found this in an interesting, but difficult read. That is not to say it was not a very helpful introduction, but this is a very complex and potentially daunting subject. This 176 page read serves as a very good springboard to a whole lot more reading! Unfortunately, I can see myself doing a lot more studying in this area; but that's the fun of it! I must admit that I enjoy learning about math, science, and philosophy; and this has plenty of all those things! Pardon me, but my "geek" is showing! How embarrassing!I would recommend this book to those who enjoy science or math, but beware, this can easily lead to much heavier reading. Consider yourself warned!

Nice coloring book. Don't try to copy and print any of the pages because it won't work. I've tried a couple and it leaves a 1/4 in blank strip across the middle of the skull. So I think they're protected. I've found a way around that. I used an app called Tiny Scanner on my iPhone and then printed it out using my bluetooth printer.

I bought a slew of coloring books. 4 of them were AWFUL and I returned them. In comparison these were decent, considering these are just shutterstock photos. Literally. It says on the book that they are shutterstock.

Fun coloring book for all ages. There's a good variety in designs and the complexity or intricacy level, so its nice to choose what you want to work on based on the effort level all in one book.

Despite, Shuttershack.com, taking credit for the images it's a fantastic coloring book for the price. Thicker pages for the use of markers, which I suggest using or color pencils. You can spend at least 30 mins on each image, which is ideal for stress relief. The price is a steal!

Great sugar skull patterns! Different from a lot of adult coloring books. If you like sugar skulls, you will love this.

Although there weren't many pages to review prior to purchasing, this coloring book is better than I expected! I love it!

This coloring book is basic. The paper is thin and some pens/markers will bleed through, so make sure to put something behind what you are coloring. There are single skull styles, along with multiple images. It's fun, but not the best quality I've come across.

Dr. Terence E. Fretheim is a strange theologian, and I mean that in the best possible way. This will not be your usual commentary. Fretheim is a biblical scholar, to be sure, but he is more concerned with doing theology with the bible than giving you historical fact. Of course, historical fact still plays heavily into his commentary (it is a commentary after all), but the reading is very engaging in that Fretheim appears to be honestly and thoughtfully wrestling with the text and the theology he can draw from it. In this commentary, for example, not only will one learn about history, what other commentators have written, and issues with the text, but one will be presented with some ways in which the text engages contemporary issues, such as disabilities studies, climate change, and the ever-present problem of theodicy. While I may not agree with every conclusion that Fretheim draws, I appreciate his putting himself out there, daring to do theology so close to the text, and taking his commentary one step further in making it speak to our world and its issues. If you're looking for a challenging and engaging commentary, one that won't put you to sleep, this might be it. I highly recommend it.

Fretheim has great commentary, I enjoy reading his work. His commentary has punch and has good flow.

I prepare and lead a bible study in my church based on this commentary. Reading this commentary, I throw many questions and our bible study group answers diversely and abundantly.

A m,ust for russel Wright collectors, an update!

Arrived in good condition...

We've been collecting RW since 1998, and have hundreds of hard to find and many one of a kind pieces.Pros:-Some new photos.-The most comprehensive author of Russel Wright, covering all designs from all eras, including furniture and plastic-Detailed price guides-History and chronology of lines based on extensive researchCons:-Due to wide scope of the book, it is fairly easy to find incorrect information on pieces, prices, and other data.-Truncated some interesting information from 2nd edition, including photos of very rare items that we collectNeutral:-Moved prices to back (for easier reference?).Bottom line: 2 stars for accuracy, 4 stars for breadth, 3 stars for depth. Thus the average rating. If you seriously collect RW and do not have either the 2nd or 3rd edition of this book, you should buy this as without doubt this is certainly better than other RW books (and we have several others), but again not necessarily a must have for those with the 2nd edition.

Mrs. Kerr was scrupulous in her research and all information with the possible exception of now outdated pricing is correct in every respect. There are no other books that cover Wright's designs and design career in such breadth and depth as those written by Mrs. Kerr. A dear and well respected friend of his remaining family prior to her death, Mrs. Kerr was privileged to be able to offer her readers unique insight into Mr. Wright's personal and professional life. Wright's place in American Industrial Design was cutting edge in his time and his work has found a following in new generations of collectors. Mrs. Kerr was instrumental in re-introducing Wright's work to the modern collecting world with her gift of keen scholarship and research as well as her great love and respect for this man and his inspired design aesthetic. She was and remains the preeminent authority on Russel Wright and her books belong in every serious collector's library.

I just started collecting Russel Wright dishes, and was looking for a definitive reference guide to help key out the pieces I had. I thought this book had a lot of helpful information about determining pattern and manfacturing locations, but I was a bit disappointed overall. Though the cover of the book features only pottery, the book itself has examples of all that Russel Wright created in his long, prolific career-- all the way down to the radios and lamps. It would be great for the diehard RW fan, but I wished it just focussed on the pottery.

Packed with information, this book is cumbersome to use since it doesn't have an index.

Everyone needs a book like this if they collect or haunt thrift stores. Very cool brand for even todays designs.

The premise is outstanding. The writing style is beautiful and reflective, which makes writing this review painful to me. I enjoyed the book overall. Yes, it's very romance driven, which can only make me assume that the moral of the series is finding meaning in loving others. But then we get to the chapter on Finn, a 300-pound kid.Throughout the book Levithan does an outstanding job at describing each person A (the main character) inhabits, giving each character a story, a humane level of respect, the benefit of the doubt even.Everyone, except Finn.With Finn, the author immediately tosses us into a world of self-loathing based entirely on A's assumption that being obese is the reason for self-loathing. Instead of looking at obesity as a symptom of deeper issues both mental and physical, A, cannot see beyond Finn's body to assess how it all happened - leaving us to once again, assume that all fat people got there through their own choices and nothing else. At one point A even equates Finn's emotions to a burp and describes that he/she COULD look deeper into Finn and find there some level of humanity. But he/she never tried. Instead, A couldn't get out of Finn's body soon enough - leaving Finn with no vote of confidence, and not even the decency of telling us his story.If Levithan had done the same for the gay, trans, black, Asian etc. stories in his book, there would have been an uproar of condemnation. But it's still okay to pick on the fat kid - and I am disappointed that a character who has no body of his/her own, is still passing judgment on the body of another who did not ask to be inhabited, and certainly did not ask to be inhabited and judged.It appears that to A (and Levithan) being fat is so far worse than being a creeper who jumps from body to body with no physical body of his/her own. It's amusing to me that A can argue his/her own value to Rhiannon, but not see Finn's value as a human being.Considering that so many kids and adults have eating disorders and body-shame issues that lead to all sorts of destructive patterns - this chapter should have been carefully examined. I am surprised that editors and family let him get away with this.The best I can hope for is that A ends up in the body of Finn again, where he/she has to finally learn to love himself. Then, and only then, will Finn have a chance to be truly seen and understood.

I was really intrigued by the unique concept of this book and after reading other good reviews I decided to get it. It started out very interesting, but as I kept reading I realized the plot wasn't going anywhere. A's experience as each person was cool from their perspective, especially because A was able to accept and appreciate such a diverse group of individuals (except for one guy who A fat shamed when in his body- not cool). Unfortunately I kept hoping there would be answers to A's situation or least some closure/acceptance with who they were. In the end, A ended up running away from their problems and not really in a self discovery kind of way. I don't regret reading it, but it left an unfinished and bad taste in my mouth.

I read in one sitting, totally engrossed in the condition of the human soul and its ability to love.The spirit of A goes beyond gender and sexual identity and into a space of simply ‘being.’ It was such an amazing perspective on existence. Juxatpose that with the love interest, Rhiannon’s perception and interactions with A and her gradual understanding and acceptance of A, and their humanity, and you end up with a universal attitude of love and acceptance of everyone. It was truly inspired.On the other hand, being A was weird. Always the interloper, unsure of your very existence. It’s a hard place to be. Alone and transient. Enough to send you completely bonkers. But A finds a way to balance it all. A's own desires and wishes without impacting the lives of the bodies that are being borrowed for the day.I loved toe tone of zero prejudice about the physical being and of identity. I loved getting to walk, if somewhat briefly, in so many other people’s lives and feel that impact.While we only get the tiniest hint of the mythology behind A and his existence, the rest of the novel feels like a social commentary on identity and how we treat each other. How we are all different, yet the same. I wanted to get involved more into the reasons why A was the way he was – a wandering soul. I was hoping that in the sequel ‘Another Day’ I’d get more answers, but alas, only another brief touch on the mythology. I have my fingers crossed that we can really sink out teeth into the paranormal or science fiction of it all in the third book of the series ‘Someday’ due out on the 2nd of October this year. Not long to wait now!There’s not much to say about this novel. It’s a romance, a character study with a heavy dose of philosophy. I loved it. The concept so fresh in YA!It’s a beautiful quick read that I highly recommend. The movie does not do it justice, but is still great viewing – though it concentrates more on the romance than of the theme - what is a soul and what makes us human.

Excellent perspective from one who served. Seldom do I condemn other reviewers in their stance, but this is the rare exception. To all those who thought or think this is American propaganda, then you either did not read the book, or your mind was made up before you started or you have not read any other memoirs from any other conflicts in the world.This is the insight of a man who was on the ground and answered the call of his country and performed to exemplary levels of honor, bravery and comradeship. You will find the same type of writing in “Last Dead Hero”- Robert Lamon, “Blood Red Snow”- Gunther K. Koschorrek, “The Forgotten Soldier” Guy Sajer “Patton” Ladislas Farago and a host of others. These men fought for their country and sought to defeat and destroy the enemy. Plain and simple, waris about killing people to win. It’s not a walk in the park and handled through diplomacy where everyone holds hands and smiles. War is ugly, destructive and dehumanizing. Ask the Russians how many they lost during World War Two. Ask the British if they had, as Neville Chamberlain proclaimed, “Peace in our time.” You win by killing your enemy!Chris gives the reader a frontline look at how the battle in Iraq was fought. Does he come across as inhumane? Perhaps. But as a sniper, his job isn’t to sit back and observe, it’s to protect his fellow soldiers in harms way. And he does this by killing the enemy.I have talked, not interviewed, many men who served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq/Afghanistan. The common thread all of these men and women hold is, they are fighting for the man/woman by their side. Politics and grand strategies are the farthest thing from their minds. Protecting their fellow soldiers is front and foremost.His insight to his commanders is a common theme you’ll find in most biographies-incompetent. His description of one of these, “0% casualties, 100% effectiveness.” galled him. How do you go out in the field to ambush or become a target for your foe and not expect to incur casualties? I’m sure those were the words Eisenhower, Bradley, Montgomery, Patton, Truscott, Roosevelt, King, Schwarzkopf and Franks told their men as they were going into the fray. No!The other side of this tribute is his family life. Was it all rose gardens and happy-go-lucky? Far from it. His wife Taya had her own battles to fight. She was responsible for raising their two children while he was off fighting. Her insights to their fiery, troubled relationship are well timed and placed through this work. She does not hold back how much she despises the military but also understands that her husband is bound and determined to keep the bad guys from coming to the states and making sure he does everything in his ability to make that happen. For her, it is a Catch-22. She loves her husband and is proud of his service, but sooner or later, he’s going to have to make family number two on the list. When Chris realizes that he’s not immortal during his last deployment and reenlistment is coming up, he will have to decide if he wants to continue his service which could result in him losing his family. He chooses the later. This alone is an excellent testament of two people not taking the easy road. They overcame their differences and remembered why they fell in love in the first place.I recommend this warrior’s story to anyone who wants a glimpse into the day to day life of a man who is dedicated to his God, Country and Family.

Really great book – I have a couple points, but first I served in Iraq in 08-09 as a gunner as a member of a combat MP team; being said, I have the utmost respect for snipers because of their overwatch capabilities. I mean, they all deserve a high five for keeping us ground pounders save over there. As for the book, I like it because Kyle writes in spoken word, not a verbage packed authoring kinda thing. He writes and talks like a SEAL. It’s well written, I enjoyed the tidbits form Taya – reminds me of when I describe my deployment and then my wife cuts in too. Very genuine book. As a soldier, I gotta pick on other branches as a requirement. Kyle calls SEALs silent professionals, I understand what he’s saying, but he can get kinda obnoxious and narsasstic sometimes, im not giggin’ the guy though, he’s a friggin’ SEAL, a horse of another color and im sure if I went through BUD/S and came out the other end, I’d be a cocky bad-a%% too! Anyway, God bless Kyle and his family, rest in peace brother, you earned eternity of it in heaven – thanks for you and all your brethren who watched our six, even when we didn’t know you guys were there.

I had intended to read this book and see the film but was immediately moved to do so after listening to an interview with the screenwriter on The Rich Roll podcast. The intro to the book states that it was submitted for review to the military prior to publication in accordance with their standards and that there was quite a bit that they didn't like. What that tells you is that this is a pretty raw account of serving as a dedicated Navy SEAL sniper. It is not an overly romanticized tale of a hero or a legend as Chris Kyle has come to be known. He definitely expresses his 100% dedication to his SEAL profession and in that regard is probably a Navy recruiters dream poster boy but he also shares the toll that a decade of commitment took on him physically, emotionally and in regards to his family. He really seems to have put it all out on the table. A great addition to the book are brief submissions from his wife on how this life was affecting their relationship and children. Without her contribution it would have been easy to view this story with a neat and clean arc of enthusiasm and excitement to action to a slightly rough but ultimately successful re-entry to civilian life. Instead we get a real sense of the fact that coming home entails much more than merely adjusting to indoor plumbing and quiet nights. This is a very complete view into the challenges this type of commitment ultimately entails for the individuals as well as their families.It is heart breaking to discover what ultimately claimed him after all that he and his family went thru. We can only hope that his story serves to shine a bright light on the issues surrounding combat veterans and that we are all much more conscious of the many sacrifices of the brave that serve us. I highly recommend his wife's book, American Wife, to get the full picture.RIP Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield

Book is a pretty detailed version of Kyle's experiences in Iraq, and it's a good read. Movie is more of a summary of Kyle's 4 tours in Iraq, and adds a lot of embellishments and untruths into the Kyle story (Hollywood does this for more dramatic effects). That being said, the book received a lot of criticisms about Kyle making up a lot of stories to turn himself into more of a "Legend" than he really was. Such criticisms included Kyle taking out Looters in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina; this was not discussed in this book. Neither was the criticism of the alleged Jesse Ventura episode, where Kyle supposedly punched the former governor in the face. None of this was discussed in this book or at least the version I read. Maybe the publishers took those stories out in this version due to the criticisms and the subsequent defamation lawsuit filed by Ventura. I don't know. Anyway, this book is a good read, and, in my opinion, a better depiction of Kyle than the Eastwood movie version.
