Confederate cavalry leader John Mosby is among the most romantic characters in the Civil War, and with good reason. From 1863 to the end of the conflict, Mosby's raiders were a constant headache for the North. Although more than 1,000 men served under Mosby, they usually acted in small detachments of several dozen, sacking supply depots, attacking railroads, and harassing federal troops. They seemed to move behind enemy lines almost at will, and in what is perhaps their most celebrated exploit, a handful of them led by Mosby himself rode into Fairfax Station, Virginia, in the dead of the night and kidnapped a Union general. When they were not on missions, Mosby's riders simply melted into the countryside, finding safe haven in the homes of sympathetic civilians. Theirs was a guerilla war. The frustrated North eventually assigned a special contingent of cavalry to combat them, and a price was ultimately put on Mosby's head. Nobody reined him in, however, and his command enjoyed the proud distinction of never having formally surrendered to the bluecoats. Shortly after Appomattox, Mosby simply disbanded his unit. This is another fine book from the prolific Civil War historian Jeffry D. Wert, who hardly could have picked a more intriguing subject. --John J. Miller

About the Author

Jeffry D. Wert is the author of eight previous books on Civil War topics, most recently Cavalryman of the Lost Cause and The Sword of Lincoln. His articles and essays on the Civil War have appeared in many publications, including Civil War Times Illustrated, American History Illustrated, and Blue and Gray. A former history teacher at Penns Valley High School, he lives in Centre Hall, Pennsylvania, slightly more than one hour from the battlefield at Gettysburg.

Enjoyed the read and learned a few things. Great subject matter and wonderful history. I somehow think it could have been written in a slightly more interesting manner, but overall I would still recommend the book.

This is a great book for those who enjoy immersing themselves in the life and mindset of Civil War times. It places you in the midst of the Rangers' forays, the hardships they endured, and their daring and determination. So much of what was central to their lives--for example, their reliance on and mastery of horsemanship--has disappeared forever. A personal connection led me to this book, after I learned that my great-great-grandfather fought with Mosby's Rangers--and I was thrilled to find his name listed in the appendix. But anyone who is interested in gaining a whole understanding of the Civil War should read this book, as it looks into a kind of fighting other than the movements of mass armies, that nevertheless played a vital role in the overall conflict.

If you are interested in Mosby's Rangers, this is a great book. This is NOT a biography of John S. Mosby, though. It is a biography of the unit, with special attention towards the leader. The depth with which Wert has researched the individuals in the group provides a clear picture into the inner workings of the Rangers, and the civilians living within Mosby's Confederacy. The book was gripping, especially for someone who grew up and lives on the edge of Mosby's Confederacy.I would warn others, though, that the lack of maps (Only one at the beginning of the book that charts all of Northern Virginia), can lead to confusion about the whereabouts of the Rangers, their adversaries, or allies, as well as the general positions of the people when in conflict. This is a let down to me since Wert included many maps in "Longstreet" to help transplant people to the Tennessee and Virginia battlefields, but I had to rely on my own knowledge of the area for Mosby's Rangers.

I was a longtime reader of Patrick F. McManus books, and considered him the ultimate writer of hunting and fishing humor. When I discovered Bill Heavey's works I went in thinking that at best his work would be a lessor version of McManus. MAN WAS I WRONG!!! Bill is at least on even footing with Patrick, both struggling over who should be at the top of the mountain. While Patrick's writings are more Western US based, Bill on the other hand brings something special that I can relate to with his stories of people, places, and adventures on and around the Potomac River. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND both of these authors anytime you're looking for some humorous reading that doesn't require deep analysis to understand the stories being delivered as if the reader were sitting around a campfire listening to someone with tremendous life experiences.I should just mention that having lead a "sheltered life", meaning I didn't discover the entertainment value of reading until later in life, I had never been introduced to either of these authors through their multitude of magazine article in "FIELD and STREAM", and other monthly publication for the fishing and hunting public. Too Bad - My Loss!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As an avid subscriber to field and stream I love this mans column. I enjoy his humor and his life lessons. His connections with his father, his Ex-wife, children, and the healing he found nature after one of the worst experiences a human being are all experiences that create a bigger picture of Bill Heavey as more then a humorist. yes Bill has a humorous way to looking at things most of the time. He writes of experiences that create a full picture of his life, allowing us into intimate parts of his life that complete his outdoor experiences. sometimes as a fellow outdoors man and specifically in one case a parent. He yanks on my heart strings combining my love of the outdoors and my love for my children in way i hope to never understand and brings a reader to their knees.When I'm out in nature, either hunting, hiking, or fishing I enjoy the solitude of being by myself and more importantly i enjoy the interactions with my own mind. The chance i get to puzzle through events, talk to myself, and process information and experiences some of them years old. I appreciate the way this guys mind works and will definitely buy any more books he writes.

Going into this I was expecting a bunch of comical stories about hunting and fishing. While there were some pretty funny stories included, there were quite a few that I found to be downright sad. The auther does tell some humorous stories about his trips afield, but he also tells some personal stories about his family and about some trips that ended pretty badly.This book is a nice reminder for those of us who struggle to balance everyday life with an outdoor life that we are not alone, and that - despite what the hunting & fishing shows would have you believe - the average outdoorsman experiences a much higher rate of failure than of success. But despite the failures, you have to be able to laugh it off and keep going whether it's hunting, fishing, or everyday life.

Despite my being a fly fisher and not a hunter, I greatly enjoyed Harvey’s stories for their variety and sincerity. Beneath his self-effacing humor are experience and skill, a good heart, and a sensitive soul. He had me laughing aloud one minute and tearing up the next. He taught me a great deal about hunting and about why not to do what I like best, fly fishing. But we share a common love of being in nature and of not taking ourselves too seriously.

A great book for the majority of hunter, fisherpeople who don't always shoot, catch, find record breaking game, or any at all. He has a humor style that I really enjoy. He also writes from the heart about some gut wrenching personal experiences. Most of the material is taken from his Field and Stream writings but is well compiled. Written from the viewpoint of a middle aged man living in suburbia who is learning to hunt and fish and knows that it isn't always easy. I would recommend this book for husbands, dads and every other average outdoors man or Woman who enjoy the chase.

This was a really entertaining book. I thought it would be mostly witty one page throw-away columns pulled directly from magazines that Mr. Heavey writes for. But the book was well edited and laid out. There were definitely some Field & Stream last page short and sweet one liners in here but they are sprinkled throughout the book with more well written articles on hunting and life in general. The book was surprisingly thoughtful and at moments, touching, while still being light-hearted and entertaining. I'm always looking for literature more on the "why" of hunting than the "how-to" and I found Mr. Heavey articulated the "why" so well with some of the stories in this book. I found I could relate a lot to Mr. Heavey - I can 100% be classified as a hunter (and almost everything else in life) as having more passion than skill. So I saw a lot of myself in the stories and was able to laugh along with Mr. Heavy's antics. This is a great book for anyone who enjoys the outdoors without taking themselves too seriously.

Carr's books were classics, butr I had outgrown them. I have many antenna boojs from ARRL and RSGB, so I ordered this expecting this to be a bit elementary. When I flipped through it on arrival, it seems to confirm my expectations. But I kept it by the throne, and as I read various sections, I started to appreciate the book for several significant features. First the update reorganizes the material so the flow is from basic to advanced. Second, the writing is very good; this means that technical points are much easier to understand. Third, as I read through sections, it made me excited by new projects. I am now planning to create a simple dipole to listen to Jupiter on 19 Mhz - I never imagined it might be feasible to create a radio telescope so easily.I continue to find fascinating ideas, now look forward to my daily ablutions, which have become signficiant input sessions. Very highly recommended.

Carr's Practical Antenna Handbook is a thick volume that tries - mostly successfully - to balance technical detail against practicality. I can follow the book without any issue, but do find it heavy going in a few places. I've found it mostly useful when looking for details and insight into one particular antenna type. While I find antennas interesting, like most amateur radio operators, aside from the introductory material and the coverage of dipoles, which everyone should read, the idea of reading the book in linear fashion cover-to-cover is daunting, besides unnecessary.This handbook is also a good alternative to the ARRL Antenna book at roughly half the price of the latter. The printed version is better quality than the ARRL book. I bought the Kindle version and am entirely happy with it (including the price, responding to one complaint).

This is a book that I am happy to call a member of my collection of antenna books. The book first of all is *readable* not being either a compendium of example antennas others have created that may or may not work, nor is it a book full of old antenna information the foundation for which might date back 80 years and be suspect. It is an up to date treatment of different types of antennas, some theory justifying them, and is exquisitely well-illustrated. Included as well are sections on modern antenna modeling as well as modern means of troubleshooting antenna systems. The book's author is a renowned expert in amateur radio operating and antenna systems. He has always been willing to help others achieve a better understanding of their stations and operation. In short the author's background is perfect to write a Practical Antenna Handbook - someone who knows the theory, practices it avidly and uses his antenna system in frequent operation. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in antennas, regardless of prior background.

This is so much better than the ARRL Antenna Book (which this same author has also been involved with over the years). At half the price. Joseph Carr is very well known name in Amateur Radio, and greatly missed too. He is/was probably the best there is at taking difficult topics and parsing them down and making them accessible to the general reader, without dumbing it down to the point of uselessness. Everything in this book is useful, and as the title touts, Practical.This book starts with some basic concepts and gradually build them up until the reader is working with some very deep aspects of RF transmission and propagation. It is comprehensive without being overwhelming. I would also recommend any of Mr Carr's other books dealing with radio electronics.

Kindle version - I'm barely up to chapter 2 on this book, On chapter one there is a link to a McGrawHill web site for additional resources that leads to a non existing page. Does anybody know were is the correct page? Other than that IS quite clear so far, no high level mathematics or dense theory. I bought this book because I just bought a Zenith Trans-Oceanic radio and want to install an Antenna in my house that does justice to the radio, nothing more. I'll let you know latter if the book was helpful for that.

Everything you need to know about any antenna, matching network or any other topic associated with antennas is directly located in the chapter you are reading. You do not have to search for anything...it is there! Filled with proven, workable antenna examples, it is a joy to read. Enthusiastically written, it is extremely concise, and accurate on every topic imaginable. The actual examples presented in this book will make you want to try them all. Finally a reference manual on the “how to”, and why the antenna you are planning to design will be incredible! It is the best Antenna Handbook ever!

I picked this up because I had a passing in interest in getting my HAM license. This was very helpful illustrating the basics. It goes far beyond what you need for the HAM license. The book has sparked a greater interest and I will likely keep studying just because I am intrigued by the variation in the different types of antennas. So, in this respect the book was a very good stepping stone to more technical aspects of the design.

My co-worker has an earlier edition. I have used his book for years with great satisfaction. Decided to get my own. New edition is even better!This book is a good intermediate level book for people who have a working knowledge of RF and antennas. As the title indicates, it is a "Practial" handbook. I recommend it as such.
