I was already a huge fan of J,I, Packer and this book has done nothing but increase my admiration and love for his writing. Each of the 18 words is dealt with in a manageable section (6-8 pgs). Now of course 6-8 pages of Packer is equivalent to 20 of most authors. He does not waste words - his writing is dense, thought-provoking, and most certainly requires focus to absorb all he has to offer. A quote from his own foreword of this book states, " I love pregnant brevity, and some of my material is, I know, packed tight (Packer by name, packer by nature)...." But it is a great book to keep in your purse or car for times when you will be playing the waiting game. Doctors offices, meetings, airports, etc. Bring a highlighter though - you will want to revisit this book often. Rest assured that J.I. Packer is not one of those authors that leaves the Bible by the wayside while he goes off on tangents and stories. He sticks to the point, develops it and cites Scripture without. An excerpt from the aforementioned foreword: "Biblical references in the studies themselves are not, however, skippable; they are part of the argument, and are meant to be looked up."This may not be the best book for a brand new Christian, lest they be the diligent, studious type; it is however a book that I would say is a must read for every faithful Christian due to thorough handling of 18 Words that encompass a significant understanding of the Christian faith (faith being one of the words as well :-)Below are (2) brief excerpts:**regeneration, pg. 144** - Since the seventeenth century, Reformed theologians have tended to distinguish between regeneration and new birth. They defined regeneration as the first act of God instilling spiritual life into dead souls, below the level of consciousness; and they understood the new birth as the first conscious manifestations of that life in new spiritual apprehension, affections, and acts - the initial exercises of faith and repentance. On the basis of this narrowed definition, they have insisted strongly that regeneration must be related to faith as cause to effect. Deny this, they say, and you deny faith to be a gift of God's grace; and what youa re saying then is that man is his own savior, inasmuch as his faith is the decisive factor in his salvation and now becomes "all his own work'. **election, pg 155** - The very idea of election implies that some are not elected. God discriminates; He selects some, not all. Out of the nations, He chose only Israel (Amos 3:2, Psalm 147:20). Out of Israel after the flesh, salvation in Christ was enjoyed only by a remnant 'according to the election of grace': 'the election obtained it, and the rest were hardened' (Romans 11:5,7). Speaking of His elect at Corinth, whom He purposed to bring to faith through Paul's preaching, Christ told Paul in a vision, 'I have many people in this city' (Acts 18:10), but this did not mean the whole population (cf. 1 Corin 1:26-29). Part of the mystery of election is that God never appears to have chosen all whom He might have chosen. Thus He impresses upon us that His choice is absolutely free, and teaches us to value the grace that has come to us personally. Amen and amen!

In print since 1981, 18 WORDS (originally titled GOD'S WORDS) is theologian James Packer's attempt to demonstrate how to do words studies from the Bible. Since the publishing of Kittel's THEOLOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE NEW TESTAMENT (Eerdmans) to Colin Brown's NEW INTERNATIONAL DICTIONARY OF NEW TESTAMENT THEOLOGY(Zondervan), Bible scholars have been writing about the words of the Bible and their meaning. Dr. Packer demonstrates how to do a word study and takes 18 important words from the Bible and takes the reader through both testaments to demonstrate what each word means in the inspired Word of God.If I had the power, I would require each Protestant pastor and seminary student to master this volume and keep it near at hand when preparing sermons to check one's theology. It is that good.Pastor Steve Martin.

Words are powerful. It is by Gods word that rose Lazarus from the dead. It was a word that created nothing into everything we see. It is by the word that we can know our creator. J.I. Packer goes into great detail in the doctrine of these 18 words that are transforming and the life of the Christian. These 18 words will stir your heart to respond to Gods truth or Be indifferent. Election is one that is most misunderstood. We can easily understate or overstate election. It is very sad to me that election is not taught from the pulpit. The chapter on Election is balanced and valuable to the Christian as it will humble and cause an urgency in your walk. Another one that is hardly spoken from the pulpit is the mortification of sin. It is obvious that it is not being taught and taken to heart with the condition of the church. Each chapter gives you the why, the what and the who

GREAT BOOK!! Pastor Packer offers great insight into words that the visible church has lost sight of or at least has miscommunicated their meaning. I would highly recommend this book to theologian and laymen alike...

A very important book for the Christian who cares to truly follow Christ. The words examined go to the heart of Christian belief and when rightly applied to the heart of the Believer.

Our church is using this book as a summer study. It is very in depth and conceptual leaving the reader much to study, learn and ponder. An excellent choice for those looking to be good students of the Word.

As always with JI Packer, this is excellent.Brief chapters explaining 18 of the most important words you will ever know (Really! The title doesn't lie). And Packer does a great job explaining them.Do yourself a favour!

This is a small book with important Christian terms defined that a teen or adult Christian should know. The terms are clearly explained and enough information is included to provide an oppourtunity for followers to discuss further.

Say what you will about fiction, but I'll choose memoirs over novels any day of the week. Even though I don't have cable, I have been religiously watching Daily Show clips for years now. So, the prospect of combining the those two things made my mouth water. Now having just finished it, it delivered pretty much everything I was expecting: basically, all of the "behind the scenes" stuff you don't see. I also found the treatment of Craig Killborn's years to be interesting. Surprisingly, there wasn't as much drama as I thought there would be, but honestly that's a good thing. What really comes through is how much like a family they were/are, and how devoted they've become to exposing b.s., no matter the source. It's truly amazing. As for the style of the book, it plays out like a talking-head documentary. A little bit different, but the narrative still unfolds coherently. So, if you're a fan of the show, getting this book is a no-brainer.

I love long oral history books on a variety subjects (and they are good value for the money, lots of content), and was a fan of the Daily Show (but my personal favorite was The Colbert Report). Lots of cool details and stories here for fans of the show in its best era. I'm only about 1/2 through it and it's good -- I must say a few things seem a bit dated already, particularly some of the stuff about the Bush era, in light of who the President is now and events in general since that time. They are open in this book that the crew and show are biased to the liberal side -- I do think Jon Stewart did a reasonably good job of jabbing both sides, obviously with more against the right. Loved when he went after the media talking heads and news biz as a whole, both sides. But I personally would prefer a little bit more balanced approach for a show like this, making fun of both sides and pointing out all their hypocrisy and bs, which they both have in spades.

I'm on CD # 6 of the 12 CD series (I think it's 12? It's a bunch!) that is funny, thoughtful, impartial, thorough story of how the Daily Show came to be, from start to current day, with many interviews and comments by all those involved with the show. I'm enjoying the heck out of it-- well researched and entertaining. The only thing I would have done differently is to record the actual voices of those who were interviewed (all the writers, Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Steve Carell, etc) rather than get voice-over actors in there to simply voice their commentaries. The only real voice on the book (that I know for sure) was Jon Stewart, who did comment and narrate all his own pieces. I'm sure that hire the original people would have been a logisitical nightmare and would have cost a fortune, but it would have been wonderful.

Loved this book! I love that Jon Stewart not only provides a lot of information in the book but that it interviews everyone from current and previous correspondents to writers and producers of the show. The book delves pretty deep from the beginning of the show to the end with some juicy bits in between. I'm a huge fan of the show and am of this book!

One of my fav books ever. I was a huge fan of The Daily Show and Jon, so I found it all super entertaining and interesting. I couldn't believe how hard it was just to put together one show, I don't know how Jon did it for so long. It had to be draining, both mentally and physically. If your a fan of The Daily Show, you gotta read this. You won't regret the purchase, I promise. The format is an oral history format, so if thats not your thing, you musn't buy it.

If you're a fan of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart you'll love this book. It chronicles the evolution of the Daily Show from original host Craig Kilborn through Jon Stewart's last days on the show. It walk you through the behind the scenes struggles to change the direction of the show from "fake news" to actually a place where people got their news. If there are disputes between people, whether people working together on the show or guests - the author provides both viewpoints. Personally Jon Stewart was where I tuned in to get my take on politics and issues of the day and I can't tell you how much I miss him. Although he more than earned his "retirement". I would highly recommend this book to anyone who expressed an interest.

This was a fantastic format for chronicling one of the most important (THE most important ?) political satire shows of our time. Anyone paying attention knew Stewart was a mensch, but hearing from the whole cohort of creators of the Daily Show will show you just how brilliant and talented Stewart and his team is/was, and what a courageously decent guy it took at the helm to make this kind of TV and comedy history. This was an engaging, funny, fascinating page turner. Do yourself a favor and enjoy !

-The Daily Show had turned into a major program to understand the country and how it works, under the hand of Jon Stewart. This is a superb book, almost a day-by-day account, with no straight text but set up in quotes by all involved. It is definitely an insiders view of how the show came to be during the Stewart years, good days and bad, good times and bad, great times and horrific.-If you are in the least interested in The Daily Show, how it was put together and how it aired, I recommend this book with the highest praise.

From the Inside Flap

Nobel laureate Erwin Schr dinger's What is Life? is one of the great science classics of the twentieth century. A distinguished physicist's exploration of the question which lies at the heart of biology, it was written for the layman, but proved one of the spurs to the birth of molecular biology and the subsequent discovery of the structure of DNA. The philosopher Karl Popper hailed it as a 'beautiful and important book' by 'a great man to whom I owe a personal debt for many exciting discussions'. It appears here together with Mind and Matter, his essay investigating a relationship which has eluded and puzzled philosophers since the earliest times. Schrodinger asks what place consciousness occupies in the evolution of life, and what part the state of development of the human mind plays in moral questions. Brought together with these two classics are Schr dinger's autobiographical sketches, published and translated here for the first time. They offer a fascinating fragmentary account of his life as a background to his scientific writings, making this volume a valuable additon to the shelves of scientist and layman alike.

Well worth reading, a bit of a scientific classic. It is interesting to see how much was known and speculated about the likely nature of the carrier of genetic information, even before DNA was discovered. The author also has some interesting philosophical and religious speculations, though he remains grounded in the scientific consensus of the day, for the most part. This relatively short and inexpensive book should become part of any scientifically literate person's background reading, IMHO.

In this review the focus is on Schrodinger's influence in bringing together physics and biology, which continues today. In effect he indirectly encourages such things as current genetics and neurology, which can be seen in the work of researchers like James D. Watson, the co-discoverer of the double helix orientation of DNA, and also the cutting edge neurological work of Antonio Damasio and embodied cognitive science. As in Schrodinger, they inevitably end up in the next stage after physics and biology coalesce, which is to say, cultural and ethical territory. Any reader of What is Life? can see this coming. Schrodinger is still good reading today in diverse interdisciplinary fields. He was indeed a man far ahead of his time.

He goes to great length to look at the atoms and molecules of DNA and builds an argument statistically about them and how they build the genome, but it's hard for a lay person to understand. It seems like they violate the rules of chance but I'm not sure. It almost seems like he isn't sure either. I will have to go back and read it again because often my mind and eyes just glaze over. It's a hard read but worth it to get a physicists perspective on a deeply philosophical subject.Schrodinger's cat in Wikipedia is a good read about his mind.

Schrödinger's What is Life? Is a classic. In spite of the new advancements in genetics that supersede some of the notions addressed, this book remains fundamental to science and for anyone with an interest in biology, physics and chemistry.Published in 1944, nine years before the discovery of the structure of DNA, this book was written after a series of lectures given by Erwin Schrödinger. It is intended to the general reader, as it offers detailed explanation of the topics, however, it must be read carefully because of the complexity of the issues. Schrödinger answers the question of how can physics and chemistry explain the events that take place in living organisms. As a physicist's he is very humble, given that he is approaching a topic outside of his expertise area, however his insight is brilliant. He makes a theoretical prediction and based on sound arguments he proposes an "aperiodic crystal" that contains genetic information. This reprint edition is completed with a nice preface by physicist Roger Penrose, but the highlight is the accompanying text Mind and Matter, also by Schrödinger. This offers a great finale, with a philosophical discourse dealing with consciousness, free will and determinism.

This is another great work of Erwin Schrodinger which gives an insight into the biology of life from a physicist's perspective that inspired scientists like; Francis Crick who discovered the structure of DNA, J.B.S. Haldane, and Roger Penrose. It is clear from this work and other books of Schrodinger that he was one of the few physicists who deeply thought of the inner most secrets of life. This book is divided into two parts: What's Life (7 chapters) and Mind and Matter (6 chapters). The physicist's most dreaded weapon, the mathematical deduction can not be used for life because it is too complex to be accessible to equations. The orderliness required for the preservation of life does not come by the random heat motions of atoms and molecules, but statistical averages that provide order. Schrodinger asks a simple question; why is life made of so many atoms and not just a few. He offers three examples; higher magnetic fields, increase in molecular population and the error introduced into a reaction rate constant or any other physical parameter would be far too great if only few molecules are involved to form life. Hence orderliness, and of course evolution and diversity of life, requires very large population of molecules. The world is a construct of our sensations, perceptions, memories; all existing objectively and all scientific knowledge is based on sense of perception and nonetheless the scientific views of material processes formed in this way lack all sensual qualities and can not account for the latter. Theories that are developed from scientific observations of experiments never account for sensual qualities. The sentient, percipient and thinking ego does not figure anywhere in our world picture, because it is itself the world picture. It is identified with the whole and not part of it. The physical world lacks all the sensual qualities that go to make the subject of cognizance. It is colorless, soundless, and impalpable. The world is deprived of everything that makes sense in its in relation to the consciously contemplating, perceiving, and feeling the subject; no personal god can form part of world model that has only became accessible at the cost of removing everything personal from it. God is missing from spacetime picture like sense of perception or ones own personality. Upanisads (Hindu Scripture) states that Atman = Brahman, the personal self equal the all comprehending eternal self. Consciousness never experienced in plural only in the singular, and plurality is merely a series of different aspect of one soul and one conscious produced by a deception (Maya). There is no multiplicity of minds; in reality and truth there is only one mind. Before and after is not a quality of the world we perceive but pertains to the perceiving mind and don't imply the notion of space and time. After relativity, the notion of before and after reside on the cause and effect relationship. The general directedness of all happenings is explained by the mechanical or statistical theory of heat. The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that order changes to disorder but not disorder to order, and time travels in one direction from past to future, but not future to past. The statistical theory of time has a stronger bearing on the philosophy of time than theory of relativity. The latter presupposes unidirectional flow of time while statistical theory constructs from order of events. My body functions according to laws of nature, but I direct body motions. The word "I" means to state that I who control the motion of the atoms and molecules according to the Laws of Nature. The uncertainty principle and the lack of causal connection in nature introduce certain features into physical reality. For example, we can not make any factual statement about a physical system without interacting with it which would change the physical state of the system. This explains why no complete description of any physical object is ever possible. These laws have pushed the boundary between the subject and object. In fact subject and object are only one, and no barrier exists. It is the same element that goes to compose my mind and the world. The situation is the same for every mind and its world, in spite of the unfathomable abundance of cross references between them. The world is given to me only once, not one existing and one perceived. The last chapter gives brief autobiographical sketches of Schrodinger translated by his granddaughter. Schrödinger was deeply philosophical with strong family: He loved and respected his parents. His strong interest in physics and Vedanta philosophy (one of the six schools of Hindu Philosophy) is apparent, but he shy's away from writing about his complex personal life that involved many women and numerous extramarital affairs.1. Schrödinger: Life and Thought2. Space-Time Structure (Cambridge Science Classics)3. A Life of Erwin Schrödinger (Canto original series)4. Erwin Schrödinger's World View : The Dynamics of Knowledge and Reality (Theory and Decision Library A:)5. 'Nature and the Greeks' and 'Science and Humanism' (Canto original series)6. Schrödinger's Philosophy of Quantum Mechanics (Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science)7. Schrodinger's Science and the Human Temerament8. Schrodinger's Kittens and the Search for Reality: Solving the Quantum Mysteries Tag: Author of In Search of Schrod. About the Author

Leigh Calvez has worked with whales and dolphins as a scientist, naturalist, and nature writer. As a scientist, she was Research Director for the Ocean Mammal Institute on such projects as the effect of vessel traffic on endangered humpback whales off Maui, Hawaii. She also led the only independent research team observing the US Navy's testing of Low Frequency Active Sonar on humpback whales in their nurseries in Hawaii in 1998. As a naturalist, Leigh has worked on whale watch boats in Massachusetts watching humpback and finback whales on the feeding grounds of Stellwagen Bank, in Hawaii on the breeding grounds of the humpback whale, and in the San Juan Islands of Washington State, watching pods of orca whales. She has also led extended whale watching journeys to New Zealand, British Columbia, and the Azores Islands off Portugal.

"What is it about whales?" Leigh Chavez asks in "The Breath of Whales: The Science and Spirit of Pacific Ocean Giants," an account of her time as a naturalist, researcher and leader of whale watches. It's a question she does an excellent job of answering, even to readers who already love whales and grasp their magical appeal. In '98, the US Navy decided to test the impact of low frequency altitude sonar on whales near Maui, where the author happened to be stationed. Upon witnessing the bizarre and upsetting sight of several apparently orphaned calves, she notified the Navy but was stonewalled. Fearing that she would be dismissed as "unscientific," she kept quiet for several years before deciding to break her silence.Though this isn't a book where the central message is "such and such a traumatic event completely transformed my life perspective," the author does write movingly about a particular time in her life with this theme. In 2004, as the single mother of a young daughter, Chavez unexpectedly developed toxic shock from group B strep infection which made her recovery uncertain for a period of time. During her time recovering, her family and friends were careful to avoid telling her that a tanker had recently spilled oil into Puget Sound. Incidentally, this occurred on the three year anniversary of the discovery of an orphaned calf named Springer, whose plight drew much attention and prompted the forming of the Orphaned Orca Fund, which raised money and worked to transport the calf to where she was eventually accepted by a pod of whales, who had been orphans themselves. (Springer did, however, had to be weaned away from approaching boats and soliciting attention from their crews.)Chavez also describes such experiences as tracking data with other researchers for humpback whales in Hawaii, her quest to spot several species of beaked whales, and her volunteer position answering questions during the annual migration of gray whales off the Oregon coast. As she observed these creatures, she found much evidence that whales use problem solving skills and creativity in their daily lives such as when they prey on salmon hatcheries, as well as display altruistic behavior. Moreover they demonstrate the capacity to mourn, as the sight of a mother orca carrying her dead calf for several weeks in 2018 in the waters off British Columbia showed.Chavez writes with the same ability to evoke the whales' world as does naturalist Diane Ackerman (though with less flowery prose). She ends by describing advancements in how whales are viewed by the human race. More radically, as the author notes, in 2013, India banned captivity of whales after becoming the first nation to declare them "nonhuman persons," something I would have found unimaginable in the late eighties when I went on my first whale watch as a child. Included are photos (black and white in my Vine issued edition), identifying sketches, additional resources and a list of other works on whales.

I read this book cover-to-cover in one afternoon. It was informative without getting too technical, and heartwarming. It isn't really a biology book, or a "save the whales" manifesto, so if you're looking for that, keep browsing. This is a book about one woman's many encounters with whales in her work as a naturalist, teacher, and student of nature. Yes, you will get an understanding of some of the many dangers whales face in our crowded and noisy oceans, but she doesn't hammer on it. You get to make your own conclusions. It isn't political. The author shares her experiences aboard research vessels, working with students and teaching tourists about whales. You will feel the salt air, and best of all, you will get to know these wonderful, mysterious giants of the seas through the eyes of a person who has spent most of her adult life studying and learning and experiencing whales in the wild. It is a lovely read, great book club choice. Great for home-schooling.

Part science, some "save the whales" a little bit of a travelogue and a tint dash of personal reminisces. This is a wonderful book for those who love cetaceans- Dolphins, Whales, Porpoises.Leigh covers six species here, from the giant Blue to the tiny Spinner Dolphin.Full of wonderful sightings from her many trips as a scientist, naturalist and writer. Many "personal" notes about various marine mammals, like their rescue, etc.Very readable, fascinating. Illustrated with Photos and drawings.

I would highly recommend this book by Leigh Calvez as a good introduction to those who do not have much experience reading about whales and have often desired to learn more. Leigh Calvez does a great job of describing several different species of whale in a way that allows the book to be read at almost any chapter. I read the chapter about Orcas first, before heading back to the beginning of the book and it did not throw off the flow contained within the book. Unfortunately, with pollution and global warming on the rise in aquatic environments, there is a lot of sad and depressing information contained in this book as well which will hopefully spur us to taking more action where ever we can to reduce our footprint on this planet.

I bought this book from Powell's Books in Portland recently and can't put it down. Even as a lifelong whale enthusiast, there's new information I learn on every page. It's one of the most engaging nonfiction pieces I've read. It's a wonderful balance of information and inspiring whale experiences. Very highly recommend this read.

This is a great book, well researched and informative. Love the artsy/animal loving flavor.

I found Leigh Calvez’s outlook and writing style to be very similar to that of Sy Montgomery. There is a mix of scientific observation and the author’s feelings about the animals she is observing and interacting with. Often, I prefer that, but there was a whiny tone to some of the writing that didn’t appeal to me. The Breath of a Whale is as much a memoir of Calvez’s time spent with and thinking about whales as it is about whales themselves. I do think that Calvez sometimes attributes her own outlook to that of the whales themselves. The book is a quick read. But that’s JustMe.

Review

Advance praise: 'Philosopher Keith M. Parsons and physicist Robert Zaballa have teamed up not only to write a brilliant narrative of the nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands, with a focus on the events experienced by the participants, but also a thoughtful meditation on contrasting historical claims, endorsing the ones that seem most reasonable to them.' Joseph M. Siracusa, The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, Melbourne, Australia, and co-author of A History of U.S. Nuclear Testing and Its Influence on Nuclear Thought, 1945-1963Advance praise: 'The authors have written a highly-readable but also technically well-informed account of a time thankfully now passed - the era of atmospheric nuclear testing. It seems especially relevant today, when some advocate a return to nuclear tests by the superpowers.' Gregg Herken, author of Brotherhood of the Bomb: The Tangled Lives and Loyalties of Robert Oppenheimer, Ernest Lawrence, and Edward Teller

Robert Cullen. Bombing is here! Thank you!

The average American possessing a basic knowledge of the history of nuclear weapons, at least to my anecdotal experience, believes nuclear weapons have been used twice since their creation, both times by the United States. The American military dropped the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, to end World War II, within days of each other, in August 1945. This history is factually incorrect. It is quite true that nuclear weapons have been used only twice in war, but they have been detonated many times in testing, and the results have been devastating.Keith M. Parsons, a professor of philosophy, and Robert A. Zaballa, a nuclear physicist, have written a concise account of the remarkable yet tragic history of nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands of the Pacific. In “Bombing the Marshall Islands: Cold War Tragedy,” Parsons and Zaballa recount the fascinating events chronicling nuclear testing and the impact on those physically affected by the blasts. The authors’ descriptions of the blasts themselves are truly frightening. One of a series of tests was named Castle Bravo, which they describe as “a stupendous blast of 15 megatons – the equivalent of the simultaneous detonation of fifteen million tons of conventional high explosive. The fireball reached four miles in diameter and excavated a crater 250 feet deep and 6,500 feet across. The mushroom cloud rose to a height of over sixty miles in less than ten minutes. The power of the blast greatly exceeded expectations.”According to the authors, “During that time, the United States conducted sixty-seven nuclear tests on and in the vicinity of Bikini. The combined explosive yield of these events was 108 megatons – the equivalent of one Hiroshima-sized bomb detonated daily for nineteen years. As a result, some of these islands were grossly polluted with radioactive fallout and rendered uninhabitable… The beauty of basic physics is part of the story, but so are terror, suffering, and death.”One of the reasons this book is so valuable is in its inherent fairness. The authors do not take political sides on the issue. In fact, they take care to sympathize and state the arguments for both points of view. While the testing clearly had awful effects, Parsons and Zaballa clearly explain why the United States felt the urgent need to test during the Cold War period in order to assure the survival of the United States. They write, “One view was that these weapons were purely evil and their eradication was the only hope for humanity. The opposed view was that eradication was impossible, at least at that time, and that deterrence was the best way to avoid a nuclear catastrophe.”Describing their book as a “scholarly popular history” written for all, the authors write, “The lesson we draw is straightforward: When nuclear war is not only conceived as possible but is planned as a basic element of policy, the risks run during the period of nuclear testing are completely unsurprising.”One physicist recorded his observation of one test. “Suddenly there was an enormous flash of light, the brightest light I have ever seen or that I think anyone has ever seen. It blasted; it pounced; it bored its way right through you. It was a vision that was seen with more than the eye. It was seen to last forever.”The authors continue, “The initial flash may seem to last forever, but in a few seconds the explosion dims to the point where it is bearable by the human eye. The light resolves into a massive fireball, like a second sun, still intensely brilliant. Then it quickly transforms into a great column of fire, thrusting upwards at terrific speed and displaying a spectrum of terrific colors. The iconic mushroom cloud forms and rapidly rises, finally topping off miles into the atmosphere, far higher than any mountain. The devastating shockwave propagates rapidly outward from the hypocenter.”They quote a report as stating, “It is clear that the use of this weapon would bring about the destruction of innumerable human lives; it is not a weapon that can be used exclusively for the destruction of material installations of military or semi-military purposes. Its use therefore carries much farther than the atomic bomb itself the policy of exterminating civilian populations.” The authors continue, “Because the hydrogen bomb would have no inherent limits on its destructive capacity, such a weapon could only be used to devastate vast areas and kill huge numbers of civilians.” They conclude: “Therefore, a super bomb might become a weapon of genocide.”While residents of the islands were forced to evacuate for the testing, the authors chide the United States government for dispossessing people on the promise that humanity was being served without fully explaining the impact on their lives. Nevertheless and contrary to promises, residents almost certainly were never going to be able to return to their native lands, at least not as a safe locale. The effects are difficult to contemplate. Upon returning to one island, “…they found that all of their traditional foods had changed. One traditional food is the arrowroot, which is a starch similar to tapioca that is obtained from the rhizomes of a local plant. After exposure to the fallout, the arrowroot died or shrank in size, and burned the moth when consumed. Other foods had changed color, which made them appear unappetizing and maybe dangerous.”On birth defects, the authors state, “…the islanders suffered an unusually large number of miscarriages and births of children with severe defects. Some women gave birth to unformed fetuses that were not recognizably human, which midwives referred to as jellyfish babies.’” Horrible stuff. In addition to this remarkable history, the Appendices at the back of the book actually serve as terrific primers for physics in general. It was the first time, at an author’s recommendation, that I read an Appendix first in order to better understand a book.“Bombing the Marshall Islands” is a fascinating journey to a complex time in American and human history. This book deserves a wide readership as Parsons and Zaballa treat the subject with great knowledge and expertise, as well as sympathy and understanding.
