And perhaps his most important.Yes, it's about how to end your books so readers are satisfied. That's important, if they're going to read your next one. And maybe tell their friends about it. And leave glowing reviews.Bell delivers what he promises, and delves into several kinds of story endings, not just "happily ever afters," but twist endings and tragic endings, and more.And, in my opinion, there's a major bonus in "The Last Fifty Pages...." It's the OTHER bits Bell includes - overviews of some of his other books (like "Super Structure" and "Write Your Novel from the Middle"). Those tips can radically improve your current book, too.I've been writing fiction for more years than I'd like to admit. And, I have far too many unfinished books on my hard drive, because they lost their spark, even with the best, most meticulous plotting I could muster. This is my first JSB book and it likely won't be my lasts. I've been hung up on my memoir's ending for months now, scribbling and erasing and retyping only to never be fully satisfied with where and how things end. I love that this kindle book focuses on this exact subject. I appreciate that the author didn't fatten his page count with page after page of other author's examples (as I so often see in the kindle bookstore). JSB offered down to earth and easy to follow content on what to do and not do when ending your book. It is more suited toward fiction writers, but even non-fiction/memoir folks like myself can find use in it.Two thumbs up. Now, someone stop me before I wipe the dust off my Amazon credit card and buy the rest of Bell's ebooks on writing tips.

The author has a very engaging teaching style and a wicked sense of humor. I loved how he used examples of novel endings to support his advice. It really made this book a joy to read. Whether you're writing your first book or your fiftieth, The Last Fifty Pages will change how you look at endings, setting ablaze a fire that propels your writing to the next level (and there's always a next level), forcing you to push harder to create the most memorable ending you've ever written. Don't miss this one, writers. It's pure gold!

I've read a lot of books by James Scott Bell, I believe he is the best at sharing information to make writers the best authors possible. There were two places in the book that made it well worth the minor cost of the book and allowed me to gleam insights to make my current work in progress better.I think the book started slow and un-focused, but if you get past chapter three you will find nuggets of gold. He does use a lot of the same stories and insights from previous books he's written, but did a good job taking the same stories and digging deeper into the ending. What makes an ending stronger, when to show a protagonist's victory or defeat.I've had a couple of readers of my first book tell me it had a weak ending, so I'm looking forward to utilizing the concepts James included in his book to make my next novel even better than the first.

I always learn so much with each James Scott Bell book I read. There are so many writing instructors out there, but Bell seems to speak the language that makes sense to me and I always walk away from his books with practical and applicable techniques for my next project to make my writing better and more sellable. I highly recommend this book, as well as Super Structure and Writing Your Novel From the Middle. All fantastic books.

His teaching style is straightforward, and his advice practical and easy to implement.In this book, JSB suggests knowing the shape of the ending and working toward it, while writing the other scenes. He identifies five ending shapes: lead wins, lead loses, lead sacrifices, lead “wins” but really loses, and open-ended. He addresses common ending problems, brainstorming endings, and making endings meaningful and resonant.While JSB covers some of the same ground from his other books (e.g. his LOCK system and plotting from the middle), there’s plenty of good advice for creating robust endings.

This book really helped me think through some possibilities for writing a dynamic ending to my next novel. I especially like the idea of aiming for a target ending but also having the freedom to change that ending when I get there. I enjoy reading JSB’s craft books. I learn a lot from them, and they don’t put me to sleep.

This book has useful tips on how to end a book with a bang, but it is also very, very funny. Funny and useful. What more could you want?

About the Author

Thomas Pavitte, born in New Zealand, is a graphic designer and experimental artist who often uses simple techniques to create highly complex pieces, and whose dot-to-dot pieces have been enjoyed by people all over the world. He set an unofficial record for the most complex dot-to-dot drawing in 2011 with his version of the Mona Lisa, in 6,239 numbered dots, which took him weeks to prepare and nine hours to complete. Once again Thomas Pavitte, the artist, has created a masterpiece work of art. I enjoy completing the art but there is frustration because of the light color of some of the dots making them difficult to see without significant magnification. I would strongly suggest darker hues for the dot colors. It would be a real shame if a purchaser were not able to see the dots clearly, and fail to complete a real masterpiece. Mr. Pavitte has mastered a technique of over printing that give a three dimensional effect to his work which I applaud. I am anxious to see what his next book will contain but I hope that darker colors will be used by his printer for the dots. I have shown some of the completed designs to friends who cannot believe the pictures are dot to dot designs. Please keep up this wonderful series but darken the dots.

Love this book! Very engrossing (to the point of having a backache from working on it.) Initially I didn't think I would like doing a project that I felt was more child oriented, but just like adult coloring books, this changed my mind, so much so that I'm looking at other dot-to-dot books by the same author. Granted, yes, the numbers are small and one must pay attention to which number is next -- I'm guilty of connecting the wrong numbers more than once -- but the pictures are amazing and they're just fun to do.

I love Thomas Pavitte's work. His attention to detail and imagination are incredible. I am doing one of his Querkles right now, which are just as much fun as his dot-to-dots. His Wonders of the World show so much labor intensiveness, it boggles the mind. His drawings seem to bring out more drama than the actual article. This man is magic.

Pavitte is the master at dot to dot for adults. His designs are one continous work. He makes the numbers change color every 100 dots if you need to break. You don't have to stop and look for the next number like most of the other books out there. I am totally addicted to his and can't wait for more to come out. Challenging and so therapeutic for relaxation in my opinion. Love these!!

I have excellent eye sight however, I would recommend having a magnifying glass along with a good light source to complete each page in a timely fashion. What was received upon the first completed page was a beautiful piece. Extremely relaxing & therapeutic in stress reduction. Unsure if they had to actually construct the book at the time of the order; it was slow to be delivered. Five weeks was a bit long to receive for that which was said to be in stock.

I bought one of these books last year and hadn’t taken the time to do even one but I had all my children visit in July and the dot-to-dots were the biggest hit. I ended up buying 4 books!

too lazy to return this but now i remember getting it before and returning it. The print is SO SMALL and I mean TINY, even with my most powerful lamp I cannot do these puzzles without magnifying glass and getting a headache.

I was looking forward to this book until I got it and realized the numbers are way smaller than I thought they would be. The only one I will actually finish is the bonus poster included in the book that covers two pages and in which the numbers are much clearer, the rest of the book should have been done like the poster spread across two pages.
