Heather Gerken is a chaired professor at Yale Law School and the leading expert on election law in her generation. In this thoughtful, provocative, and groundbreaking work, she argues for a "democracy index" which would rank the states according to how well they run their elections. We have already seen how various widely publicized ranking systems--like the U.S. News and World Reports ranking system of schools--have wielded enormous benefits to both consumers and institutions. This book promises to do the same for a state election law system that is badly broken. It has already inspired Senator Hillary Clinton to propose a bill requiring a feasibility study for the creation of such an index; it should also inspire policymakers, scholars, and general readers to engage its arguments.

The subtitle of Heather Gerken's "The Democracy Index" is "Why Our Election System is Failing and How to Fix It." Gerken certainly presents many failures within the election system. However, she does not really explain how to fix it--she explains how we can gather the information needed to fix it.Basically, Gerkin explains that there is not enough good data on why elections have problems, and until we collect better data on the process, we will not be able to solve the problems. Once we have better data, states and localities that have poor election systems can learn from the policies of the states and localities that have better election systems.Gerkin sees two main problems with the current elelction system: partisanship and localism. Gerken also notes that "my assumption is that most election problems are caused by resource shortage, not partisanship."Gerkin wants to "create an environment that is receptive to change." Her Democracy Index is "a data-driven, information-forcing device designed to generate pressure for reform." The Democracy Index's goal is to "rank states and localities based on election performance." The result would be that "a bad ranking provides a justification for getting more resources; a good ranking helps...protect a policy that is under attack."Gerkin describes the good information that the Democracy Index could provide, and also identifies and discusses possible problems with the idea. It's refreshing to see someone explain both the costs and benefits of a plan. Gerkin compares the Democracy Index to other ratings system as well, to show how well such ratings work (and don't work). Gerkin also discusses the difficulties of enacting reform, and how these challenges could be overcome.It seems to me that Gerkin may underestimate the cost of developing and maintaining the Democracy Index. The ranking system works only if "good" data is identified, and much effort would be needed to gather the data, analyze the data, verify that the data has not been tampered with, and publish the data.Also, Gerkin does not really discuss whether or not the public truly sees election reform as a high-priority problem. Maybe it's a much more interesting problem to lawyers who study the election process and work on election campaigns?Gerkin is a lawyer and professor of law at the Yale Law School. She worked in the "boiler room" as part of Obama's 2008 campaign's election protection team. Through this experience Gerkin had a front seat from which to observe the election process in action.Though Gerkin worked for Obama, her book is free of partisan ideology, political sniping, and name-calling. This is a book both progressives and conservatives should enjoy reading.Throughout the book Gerkin presents her arguments in clear, well-documented language, free of legal and academic jargon. It's a pleasure to read such a well-written book.

About the Author

Yunus A. Cengel is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. He has a BS in mechanical engineering from Istanbul Technical University and an MS and PhD in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University. He served as the director of the Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) at the University of Nevada, Reno, from 1996 to 2000. This book is hands down the most easily understood undergrad book I've read so far.This book was chosen for my Chemical Engineering course, and while I can't testify to what extent it taught Chem-E specific concepts, seeing as this was my first fluids course, I had a firm grasp of every concept in the book we covered (no thanks to my instructor, if you catch my drift). Tons of pictures and helpful diagrams. Believe it or not, I actually WANTED to read this textbook.I ordered mine "used" from TextbookRush Jan/2014 and I'm pretty sure the book was either brand new or the engineering student who previously owned it just used it as a paperweight.

The example problems only have the most simple problems but then the chapter problems are like 100 times harder and there is no sample to work off of from the chapter. Good luck using this book.

Pretty frustrating that it came with bits of paper taped to the pages...get to carefully try and remove them without tearing the page and messing up the problems.

This book is well written for the engineering student who needs a break from the normal style of writing. Many diagrams and example problems written for us to learn, not to struggle through. I also purchased div grad curl and all that to aid in my fluids journey.

A textbook that has SI and US customary versions. Double check which is needed for your class.

I bought this textbook used. It came in a slightly more than gently used state. The cover and binding were the most damaged pieces. Otherwise the actual pages were fine. As for the book itself, they have plenty of examples and problems to work through. But some of the answers they provide to the problems are wrong.

Decent book for engineering school, not the best.

The explanations are excellent, and the figures really help you to understand. Every line in the book has importance to it, which helps with understanding the concept.

This is my new favorite book! I LOVE IT! So many wonderful photos and ideas along with great instructions to do them yourself. Easy stuff! I will definitely be doing many of the awesome projects in this book. OH the ideas are are forming and making my head spin with inspiration!!!

This is a good how- to book for beginning to advanced diy. Reading it, I am sure i can arrange a ladies get together where we can work on some of these ideas. However, being an avid DIYer, I had to chuckle at how many of these ideas I've already done- even the advanced ones. Most of these exact projects are saved on my Pinterest boards. But this is not the fault of the author- I should have been more aware when I bought it. The ideas are good (although some fresh content would have been nice), the pictures bright and lovely, and it's nice to look at this without ads bombarding my phone.

Gave as a gift for Secret Sister at church and she loved it! She got several good ideas from it and she said the instructions are easy to follow but she is a decorator so may not be easy for someone like me.

There are a few cute ideas and the instructions were good. I was hoping for more inspirational pictures, however it was just a few instructions for projects. Save yourself the money and just look on pinterest.

I. Love. This. Book. I'm on pinterest everyday and there was stuff in here I hadn't thought of and the instructions to make it! I read it right when I got it and carried it with me all day! If you like farmhouse style, you have to have this book. It's a great start to a beautiful, simple, farmhouse look and easy projects to get you there!!

REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK, LOTS OF GREAT IDEAS. THE SURPRISE WAS HOW MANY & HOW DETAILED THE PROJECTS WERE. IF SHE DIDN'T MAKE IT, SHE TELLS YOU WHERE TO PURCHASE IT. CAN'T WAIT TO MAKE SOME OF THE REALLY NEAT PROJECTS FOR MY DAUGHTERS NEW HOUSE!

Planning an extensive driving tour thru Provence, and I needed a large-scale PAPER map so that I could easily highlight place names and write notes. This is a scale of 1/200,000 which is perfect, as its large enough to show much detail. Beautifully done with mileage, travel times, important places to see, and locations of gas stations.

This map and the other Michelin maps that we ordered for regions of France are very detailed and very well done. But, to find your way through the back roads, a GPS is far better. The GPS provides warning of how far away the turns are, and there were a lot of then. We would not have traveled as extensively through the smaller communities and out-of-the-way places with only maps and the traveling that we did would have been far more frustrating with just the maps. I have always liked maps and thought of the GPS a nonessential but am now an enthusiast.Some of the reviews mentioned that the maps were large and awkward in the car but we had no problem in that regard.

Nice map, but was a map of several countries, including France. Had wished for map of France only with several inserts of cities of France. It was a nice reference - hard to tell toll roads, ended up using map as a reference and our GPS more. Easy drive from Zurich to Dion, then looping to Annecy (lovely town). Passed thru several small downtowns of (about 4 American blocks) towns. No stop signs, nor lights, just round circles (round a bouts), GPS helped a lot - many towns listed future towns on direction arrows - which is where this map helped! Hit a construction in France, ended up a rural hill - so GPS nor map helped, glad I caught a glimpse of road before GPS switched to new route. But if you get lost, most roads loop back to main road. Also if use nontoll roads plan extra 2 hours for longer legs of trip (As in Zurich to Dion, France). Also - on the GPS non toll route - HARDLY any cars on road - Awesome!! Tip: Always keep a 1/2 tank - gas stations hard to find, non in 1 block towns (ha), and several were closed. Also suggest carry cash - had hard time getting code to take on our credit cards with chips at stations. Also many have diesel, so make sure you study type needed. I believe we used something with a 95e in it. "Gasal is Diesel - and green handle is what you want. But ask someone to be safe. Hints - check with hotel on free downtown parking hours. Get the smallest car you can - many parking spots were tight- not unusual to see side windows pulled in, and leave room at back if back in, just in case person next to you is close in garage and you need to climb via trunk to get into car. ha Another hint: heard 2 horror stories of Eurocar rental - incorrect size for large family- they had to come back the next day, another family had to go to 3 DIFFERENT Places to track down their rental car. Most rental cars are stick shift.

The map is fine and was marginally helpful on our recent trip. However, as other have commented previous on the Michelin maps - it is huge! Very difficult to manage in a car. Parts of the area covered are represented on both sides of the map, so that is confusing, too. Don't know if I'll use this style map again.

This detailed road map saved us from getting lost daily, during a recent trip to Brittany, especially because cellular service on our otherwise smart-phone was non-existent in many small villages and back roads. Well worth buying ahead of time!

We always buy maps for our intended vacation destinations months before the trip. We study the entire region and along with guide books choose one particular area as a focal point. The Michelin Regional Maps are extremely useful in helping us make this decision and to see the interesting sites within short distances for us to fan out and explore. After our daily trips, my husband highlights the routes that we have explored and the map then becomes a keepsake. Love them.

This should be labeled western Loire Valley, only. Cuts off Saumur and barely covers Tours. I recommend Michelin maps, but wish I didn't overlook some previous comments that mentioned that this map does NOT cover the entire Loire Valley.

Useful in planning our trip. Disappointing that it only covers the western portion of the valley. I needed to order the map for Central France to plan for our trip. Has good detail, with route names and driving distances. Large to use in the car--but most maps are if not folded to reveal smaller areas.

Best collection of photos for this bridge and its disaster I have found.

The book was very informative and interesting. The pictures were great. I lived there when this happened and I have recommended it for purchase to several friends who lived in the area.

I remember when this event happened- I was a kid at the time but it was scary - and is still haunting to this day.

Informative but also respectful of the victims, their friends, and families. Early history of the bridge was quite interesting and the photos were thoughtfully selected.

Excellent book with rare photos and brief personality profiles of many of the victims. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in a tragic piece of American history.

Excellent job of covering the details of this horrible tragedy.Highly recommend this book to those who have an interest is the fall of the Silver Bridge.
